Hi Beth While I cannot help much with your Bernard GORDON, his wife was Margaret BELL, daughter of William Gordon and Alziere BELL of whom much is written and available. Alziere and her daughter Margaret were born on the island of Carriacou, in the West Indies, but the family returned to WGB's home near Dumfries, Scotland, where other children were born. It is understood that it was partly because of Margaret's health that the family left Scotland. I too do not know what became of Bernard. The short version of the story is that WGB, his wife and children, including Margaret, came from Scotland. They left Liverpool on 17.Jul.1839, aboard the "Lady Lilford". They embarked 27.Sep.1839 at Adelaide, seeking land there, but eventually came on to NZ via Sydney, (we think) arriving Petone 16.Mar.1840 aboard the "Palmyra". So, I have lots of information on her, her siblings, and the rest of the family. Margaret & Bernard had no children, or at least none that survived. Ah, but now I see that you know all that already! I had presumed Bernard & the BELLs travelled together, and of course now I look at the "Lady Lilford" passenger list, Bernard is not there. I do not know how when or how he arrived. It may be him on "Pauline" from Nelson to Sydney in 1852 http://www.blaxland.com/ozships/events/2/189.htm#11929 I fear not as helpful as I had thought I would be ! I am struggling to find any information about a relative, and I know next to nothing about him. My Mr Bernard GORDON married in Nelson in 1848. He is listed as a full age clerk from Wellington. He and his wife Margaret did not sty together and family anecdotes have him leaving NZ. However, according to BDM's, a Mr Bernard Gordon died in 1915 aged 90 years. If this is my man, he would have been born circa 1825, and aged around 23 when he married . . . so I am hoping it is him. But I have no idea how he came to NZ or when, or where from. Please, does anyone have any advice? Thanks, Beth

Hi Beth, seems he may not be your man. An article on Papers Past in 1899, states: "Bernard Gordon, Naseby, 69 years of age: 31 years in the Colony: Widower:-Pension of £18." Unless the "years in the Colony" is since a second visit to the Colony. Thanks for all your help. Thia has given me a couple of leads. The HouseOfNames website info that said he arrived in Wellington in 1840 was great, but I can't find him on any passenger list! The Rimutaka sailing of 1887 to London certainly supports the theory that he left the country. But the 1915 death is also tantalising - BDM's say he was 90 years old, so the age would be right. Rellies don't make it easy , do they? Beth
Just found this information This second generation lived out their days on these Waimea acres which they had worked so hard to develop. Margaret had earlier married Bernard Gordon in New Zealand, but he had returned to Scotland without her. She lived with Elizabeth at Overton until her death in 1882, when she was buried beside her parents at Fairfield. Eliza Morley died in 1897 and was buried beside William Gordon Jnr in St Alban's Churchyard Appleby, close to Bellevue. Alongside is the grave of a first cousin. Thomas Bell Smith who died while on a visit from the United States in 1888. link below http://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/tm/scholarly/tei-NHSJ06_01-t1-body1-d8.html thanks Michelle On 15/03/2015 15:11, aotueka via wrote: > Hello all. I've been given a foolscap page family tree for this couple, who were married 28 July 1828. Their children were Mary (1828), Edward (1830) and Daniel (1834). Edward landed in Australia in 1855 and to NZ in 1863. He married Laura in Dunedin, 1879 and had 4 children between 1880 & 1890- Samuel, George, Daisy and Harry. Edward died 1917 and Laura in 1926. Samueld died WW1 and a grandson George in WW2. There was a reunion in 1990. A scan or photocopy is available on request. Carol Spragg 55c Broadway Nth Stratford

Hi everyone, Am looking for a newspaper artice re the death of Thomas Ormsby in 1967 whose Will was lodged in Wellington. Was a retired hotel keeper and date of death 21 May. Suspect he was born in 1876 as Thomas Ormsby Queenin (parents Ann Lynch 1845-1880 and William Vallyfied Queenin (1845 - 1915) and changed his surname to Ormsby by the time he married in 1921 to Ann Jane Tinney. Need to verify whether this name change is his. If so, Thomas was the grandson of Francis Ormsby Queenin who came from Ireland and died in Auckland in 1891. Would appreciate any assistance Chris

Hi Folks, As part of 2 military projects I have completed down here I have compiled a file which includes photos of 124 Troopships that transported NZ troops to and from World War Two in Europe and the Pacific. The file also includes photos of 24 Navy ships that accompanied the NZ troop convoys. I have compiled the lists of ships names and have obtained the photos from various sources and although the list is quite large I am sure there may have been a few more that I may have missed. The file is 3.72 MB and in PDF format. Happy to email a copy to any list member interested. Regards Allan Sunny as always Waikouaiti. Settled by white fellas 175 years ago.

Excellent work Graham, I too would like a copy. My uncle was killed on the "Neptune", which wasn't strictly a troop ship, I understand it was British but being passed to the NZ Navy when it encountered a minefield. I believe this was the single greatest loss of life form our Naval forces. Forgive me if I'm wrong. Do you have the lists for that aswell? I don't agree that the occupation is ROPE + SISAL MAKER. There is no "and", and the word is definitely too short with what looks like a Z that drops below the line. I believe that natural jute ropes were soaked/coated with a mix that essentially kept the strands together when the rope was twisted together. This material may have been referred to as SIZE. Similar to the SIZE that was used on house walls as a wallpaper paste. Tar was also used as a waterproofer, and the rope was dipped in huge tar vats after it was made. According to lists on the internet that describe and list old English professions and occupations . . . /Sizer - one who applies size (gelatinous material-glue) to textiles / Someone would have had to have manufactured this SIZE, so perhaps there profession/occupation would have been ROPE SIZE MAKER. Probably not a common occupation to have??? I tried that, too, Stephen, but someone beat me to it! It's always worth looking further afield, isn't it? I often do that with Censuses. Sisal seems logical, it's probably a quirk of the writer's spelling.....
