Hi Elizabeth In case it helps someone, Alexander BLACK his wife 3 sons and 4 daughters arrived in Otago in 1859 from Glasgow aboard the "Sevilla". They had a further son and 2 daughters in NZ. I have 2 Janet McGilvery's from the Invercargill area in my tree, one was Janet McGregor who married Neil McGILVERY and she died in 1900 in a train accident and the other was their daughter who married Richard Pyke DALTON, my relly, and she died in 1935. They are buried at Bluff. They may be related but I have not been able to find a connection. I hope someone can claim the photo's as it would be just great for a descendant to have them. Hello Sue , There was more than one William Batten , born about 1844-1847 in Somerset , England . An Able Seaman William Batten , sailed aboard the Royal Alice from London to Sydney , arriving 13 July 1864. This particular William Batten was from Bristol , England ( not necessarily born there though ) , and gave his age as 20 years. He was thought to have died at sea about 1878. His parents may have been : William Batten , born 1813 Ann Phelps , born 1813 Hope this helps rather than hinders ! Dear Listers, I had a letter from a cousin today saying that she had been told by her grandmother, Marion McKENZIE who married Henry Stalway Verne READE that she had taken a trip to NZ before she married to Henry READE in Melb in 1912. So maybe she had met him in NZ after all. I had a brief look at shipping from Victoria but could not find her name on the list and wondered where else I should look. Many thanks for your help Cheers Chris
