Their prices are US $$ but if you are based in NZ, make use of the "Ask Bookseller a Question" facility so you could get NZ $$. Thank you Beth for bringing to my attention the book Maurice McGreal wrote, "A Noble Chance". I came across Maurice's work when I was researching Edward Rogers and I spoke to Maurice's wife, but by that stage Maurice had passed away. Maurice's research on Edward ROGERS and his wife Jane MORAN is included in the National Library of New Zealand's Genealogical papers re Moran, Kevey and Rogers Families. Hopefully I did justice to his research in my article on Edward Rogers published in "English Parents" [pub Dunedin Family History Group 2014]. For those interested in early New Plymouth and Auckland families, the ROGERS arrived in New Plymouth on the Blenheim in 1842. The mother Mary ROGERS [nee SYMONS / SIMMONS] had remarried and so accompanying them on the voyage was her new husband and his children, the ARGALLS. Also on the voyage was Mary's eldest daughter and her family the LANGMANS. While the Langmans remained in New Plymouth, the Rogers and Argalls were part of the group that left New Plymouth January 1845 to make a better life in Auckland. The families worked on Kawau Island in the copper mines, before dispersing to chase other mining opportunities, the ARGALL men to NSW and later Victoria, Edward ROGERS also to NSW before returning to Auckland and Thames, and Thomas ROGERS and wife Janet BARR went to the goldfields of California. Thomas and Jane returned to New Zealand where they ran the Criterion Hotel in Otahuhu and farmed at Papatoetoe. John ROGERS and wife Jane ROBERTSON remained in Auckland where John ran a carting business. His early death in 1864 meant his large family faced great hardships. Jane later remarried twice. Of the Rogers daughters, Mary, Mrs LANGMAN, stayed in New Plymouth. Fanny ROGERS married William GOLLOP and died not long after the birth of their son William Henry GOLLOP. William Gollop after leaving Kawau remarried and lived for many years in Australia. He returned to New Zealand and died in Thames. [The Gollop Family History was written by Jocelyn Fisher 1994, copy held at Nation Library of New Zealand] Fanny and William's son William Henry Gollop was a champion billiards player who, after an eventful life in New Zealand, lived in Western Australia and was at one stage mayor of Day Dawn.....an intriguing character who I enjoyed researching. Eliza ROGERS married Henry HURFIT and it is their daughter Fanny who set me off sorting out the history of the Rogers in New Zealand. Fanny married Charles AMYES. She was literate and obviously capable as she was still in her late teens when she was witness at the marriages of her uncle Edward Rogers and Jane KEVEY [nee Moran] and at her cousin Ellen Rogers's marriage to Richard McGEE. Henry HURFIT died while the family were living in Thames during the goldrush years and they later returned to Auckland before some moved to Nelson. The stories on the mother, Mary SYMONS/ROGERS/ARGALL, John ROGERS, Thomas ROGERS, Charles AMYES and his stepmother Elizabeth AMYES are also included "English Parents" A copy is available from the NZSG library. Rather than repeating information, the stories reflect different aspects of the families shift from Illogan, Cornwall to their very different lifestyles in NZ. Mary's story includes delightful snippets such as references to the Rogers women in a diary written by the surgeon on the Blenheim and the infamous statement by Wicksteed, the New Plymouth agent, about the passengers heading to Auckland in Jan 1845 "' With one or two exceptions, they are very undesirable settlers". Isn't family history fun! cheers Bobbie -------------------------------------------- On Tue, 24/3/15, aotueka via <new-zealand@rootsweb.com> wrote: I am trying to find a book that was written by a relative, called "A Noble Chance" by Captain Maurice McGreal. Hi Christine, I have no connection to these people but wondered if there was the possiblility of significant information in Mary Ellen Ellis EVERETT's actual name. I note that in the info you have given that Mary Ellin Ellis is the only child given three christian names and that Ellis is also a reasonably common Family name. I wondered therefore if perhaps this could be a clue to one or both of her birth parents. Just a thought. Just a thought - if Alfred was born in Gisborne in the 1860s, I have a whole family born there who have no birth registration records, and one explanation I've been given is that the courthouse there was burned down at one point.
