Also I have an obit for Richard , he died after his wife so the information would have been from a son or daughter. It states that he was a police Sergeant during the WAIRAU massacre in 1843 ( I have read up on this) Are there any records available that might contain this information. Richard and his family only stayed about 4 years in N.Z went to Sydney for about 4 years finally settling in Sth. Aust. Richard was a cabinet maker. I really would like to find anything I can for the family during their short stay in N.Z. I have tried papers past, there is a LANGFORD in Partnership with GARDINER but that LANGFORD had initials J.R. Any help much appreciated, Chris in West. Aust.
Hi All: Police Gazettes (described in Archives Info Sheet 1) are very informative, with photographs of some prisoners from 1908 in photo supplements. As well as wanted criminals, absconding husbands who left a wife and child without support and missing friends, in the 19th century there were reports of items stolen down to watches, horses etc so your rellie may appear as a victim! Also lists of prisoners convicted (ie to a term in jail) and discharged, often with year and country of birth. Nationally from 1877, plus some Canterbury & Otago Provincial police gazettes from 1861. They are restricted for 70 years. Note that Police criminal files may be restricted for 60 or 100 years. Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch Archives seem to hold most unrestricted Police Gazettes, but Dunedin Archives seems to have some gaps in their holdings. Hi Chris Even though you live in OZ same as I do, if you can narrow down time frames it all helps. The police gazettes during the time period you are looking for are indexed, which really helps if you need someone to do the search for you. Suggest you ask for help from a professional researcher who can go to the archives and obtain the data very quickly for you. I have looked at the Police Gazettes myself when I visited Dunedin archives and found easy to go through quickly. Also now you can also get photographs of the actual documents in the Gazettes themselves. Sometimes you might be lucky and also get a photo (mug shot) Also enquire at the different archives Wellington and Auckland to see what they will charge for an hour's search of the police gazettes - given that you already have quite a bit of info from paperspast it would help them with the search and make it quicker. Believe me this is a track that is well worth going down if you can. We love this list! There are so many helpful people out there who enjoy solving mysteries. Within 30 minutes of posting last night, Ray Rob had found us another Simmons daughter, Myrtle born in 1900. (How did we miss that?) An hour later, he had found Myrtle’s marriage and where she lived. This morning, Philippa Parkes told us she knew of Myrtle’s daughter and told us how to contact her descendants! All that before we even started to get information on Myrtle’s death location from other people on this list; that location alone would have alerted us to where to search for the Crisskey/Simmons extended family. And do you know what? Myrtle was living less than five kilometres from where her sister, Alice, and her family archives were located. Family knowledge of that link had been lost. To everyone who helped us, thank you so much. We are now on the track of a branch of the family we did not know existed and who might well be worthy recipients of genealogical treasure worth far more than its weight in gold. Having recently been down that road myself, I know that you can see items as listed in the appropriate year police gazette which lists convicts, people sought, and sentences. These and other records are found at Archives ( I went to Auckland Archives to find the info I needed for the upper North Island ). They also have court record books available to view. There were traveling magistrates that visited outlying "courts" - such as Helensville. You should visit the archives if you can - they have a wealth of info at their fingertips. Ah . . . thanks. The photo is definitely of my grandfather in his early 20's so the photo is most certainly circa 1921. Does anyone know whether records for court appearances, terms of imprisonment are available for people who are now dead, but who committed crimes during 1910's to 1930's. Magistrate courts involved were Auckland and Wellington as far as I can ascertain. Papers Past has much information on the 2 people I am interested in -Mabel Isabella O'Brien b 1893 NZ who married 1912-Brooks, Bernard M- then 1922,Golding, Ivan George, and 1925 Stout, Albert Edgar. Mabel died in 1953 in NZ. There is one child from 1st marriage. Not sure of others. Appearances before the court seem to commence in 1922 and were frequent for 15+ years.. The second person is William Henry whiteside, known as Henry or Harry. Born 1888 Auckland- a bootmaker- convicted in 1918 for assault and he had various appearances before the court for similar offences over a 20 year period. In the 1930's he was convicted for assault of Mabel Isabelle Stout- the woman mentioned in the preceeding paragraph.Harry and Mabel lived together for about 5 years in the 1930's. Gidday all. I have a photo of my grandfather taken circa 1921 that is stamped with Rod Neill Photo Studio, Nelson the back. This stamp says extra copies are available but does not quote a negative number. Problem is . . . I don't believe my grandfather went to Nelson before 1935 . . . Does anyone know whether Rod Neill Studio only did sitting portraits in their studio so that my grandfather would have been in Nelson at the studio, or if this photo could have been a reprint of a negative??? Thanks. Beth
The plot thickens - same name, same age and same date of burial as the one in Riwaka Cemetery but this one is for Nelson cemetery.... would guess that P Day & Son have submitted all their cremation records to Nelson City Council who have then put it down as a Nelson burial when it looks like the ashes may have been put in at Riwaka with her parents.... This is obviously the right June Elizabeth Smith because she is buried with her parents - no funeral director given so would try the Nelson Mail and see if there was a death notice. Again if it was a Brethren burial there won't be any death notice. Recently I’ve been cataloguing old family photos and came across a cluster sent by two uncles of mine and a cousin of theirs who served in Fiji early in NZ’s involvement in the war in the Pacific. They show young men having fun in a tropical environment, and were no doubt intended to calm the fears that family back in NZ were no doubt feeling very soon after the Pear Harbour incident. With the Anzac centenary fast approaching, in Australia there are all sorts of programs being made with death and disaster overtones. When I saw these photos I couldn’t help but think of this other side of war: young men away from their families for the first time, in a tropical paradise. I couldn’t resist sending the photos to the Auckland Cenotaph so that this aspect of war was not forgotten. Paddy Byers Hobart, Tasmania

There is a burial in Nelson for a June Elizabeth Smith that would be about the right age. If this was an Exclusive Brethren family there will not be any death notice in the local paper but I suggest you check with Days Funeral Services and see if they still have their records or if they have been passed onto Ancestor's Attic. Second thing I'd suggest would be trying for a death notice in the Nelson Evening Mail as it was then in case they weren't Brethren. Tasman District Council cemetery records site is not working at the moment to check for both names - there is no Graham George Smith buried in Nelson.
