    3. The Macdonald Dictionary project - a crowd sourcing project. It is indexing the personal names on the cards and capturing maiden names. https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/christopherthomson/macdonald-dictionary/ In this project identify and transcribe the names of people mentioned on the handwritten cards of the G R Macdonald Dictionary of Canterbury Biographies. Sign in, draw box around a name, type out full name, add a year of birth or death etc.. and repeat until all names are done on card. If you find any South Canterbury surnames please forward them onto me. Thanks. e.g. Fulbert Archer (1825 - 1904) A-241 Charles Dunnage D-543 Frederick Robert Flatman (1843 - 1911) F-167 Or does someone have the South Canterbury index which contains about 1250 names? Cheers, Olwyn olwynbw@gmail.com Canterbury Museum in CHCH has the cards. https://collection.canterburymuseum.com/search

    1. [nz]Howick Branch Meeting this Saturday
    2. Howick's branch meeting will be held this Saturday, 12 October at 1:30 pm in the St. Andrews Church Centre, corner Ridge Road and Vincent Street, Howick. We are privileged to have Colleen Brown coming to talk to us about her book The Bulford Kiwi - The Kiwi We Left Behind. She has uncovered new information about a distant chapter of New Zealand's military history. Her book details why a group of New Zealand soldiers stationed at Sling Camp in Bulford, Wiltshire, England, created a large image of a chalk kiwi bird and the letters 'NZ' on the side of a nearby hill in 1919 while waiting to return home from World War I. However, a labour strike in the UK delayed their journeys and the men rioted because they couldn't get home. After the riot, a senior military officer had the idea of keeping the soldiers busy by having them create something to leave their mark on the area. They decided to carve out an image of a kiwi bird on the side of a hill behind Sling Camp. The image is 128 metres long and 28 metres high and is still visible today. Colleen attended the centenary celebrations in June this year which was reported on TV1. She is currently researching her second book on WWII American Soldiers stationed in New Zealand. Some street parking is available on Vincent Street but there are ample car parks at the back of the church (driveway off Vincent Street) and you can enter the building by the front or rear entrances. As usual afternoon tea will be served after the talk and the library will be available for browsing (and for members to borrow) both before and after the meeting. Door charge $5. See you on Saturday? Further information phone 576-4715 or 576-5400.

    3. Hi I am the Great-Grand Daughter of Rita May Simpson. I believe the surviving offspring is my grand mother Valerie Yvonne Hallam, born in 1929 Wellington New Zealand. My Grandmother was adopted unofficially and brought to Australia by her adoptive parents. Valerie Yvonne Hallam is the bilogical daughter of Rita May Simpson, although we have always been unsure on whom her biological father was. If you could please respond to this email about this matter that would be greatly appreciated. We would love to hear from you and im sure my grandmother Valerie would appreciate some insight into her real family. Regards, Jodie Gollan. Sent from Mail for Windows 10
