Any records of his jumping ship are secondary to the other records you should be looking at from a genealogical point of view. When you say you know nothing about him, does this mean you don't have his death certificate, his burial records, the marriage certificate to your grandmother, any other oral history, registrations of his children, electoral roll, photographs? His origins, and that of the ship he jumped, will determine where you’d start looking for records of where and what he jumped from. All the above records should (or would have, at least asked for) his origins. J. The gospel according to Bill GATES: In Bill Gates' message about life for recent high school and college graduates, he lists 11 things they did not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a full generation of kids with no concept of reality, and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world. RULE 1 Life is not fair; get used to it. RULE 2 The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself. RULE 3 You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car phone, until you earn both. RULE 4 If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure. RULE 5 Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping; they called it opportunity. RULE 6 If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them. RULE 7 Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents' generation, try 'delousing' the closet in your own room. RULE 8 Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades; they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life. RULE 9 Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time. RULE 10 Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs. RULE 11 Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one. Dennis BROWN <denbrown@clear.net.nz>

Thanks Jenelle - I did do all the research I could many many years ago when we first bought the place and made contact with several living descendants and managed to get a couple of photos of the cottage and Samuel & Eliza from one lovely old lady in Christchurch. She has since died but her great nephew is now the Principal of the college where Evan used to teach. I’m just hoping that someone new may have popped up or come out of the woodwork - really after photos if I can get them. Hope you are well and happy - we’ve just started our most challenging and LAST cottage restoration - it really does look like a dump on the outside and hopefully we can transform it, increase its value markedly and get a decent rent from it once we’ve finished and make it something we can be proud to own. Have a look on Google for 9 Rentone Street, Nelson and you’ll see what I mean about being seriously ugly. Have just finished a 7 month job on our cottage in Stoke and have new tenants shifted in - it looks absolutely fantastic and with tenants who are a couple in their late 40s and 50s we’re hopeful it won’t turn to custard. If you Google <Archway> the NZ govt site and put the name of your school into the search box you will get the schools with Registers and other school records deposited at Archives. Some early schools have been indexed but most class list records are just by year and you search by page if they've been scanned. The NZ Society of Genealogists hold school records but require a membership. Noeleen.

Bethlehem School was, and still is as far as I am aware, in Carmichael’s Rd, Bethlehem on the outskirts of Tauranga, opposite side to Mt Maunganui. My mother-in-law and many others of her Ormsby Whanau went to school there. Hi Listers, Am seeking your assistance regarding the operation of laundries in Auckland Provincial Hospital and Auckland Asylum in 1860s. My gr gr grandmother Charlotte Moore was awarded tenders to provide laundry for these 2 institutions between the years of 1860 to 1865. I am keen to find out more about how the laundries were operated. Does anyone know whether the laundries were on site, or elsewhere, roughly how many women worked in them and if there is any research available on these 2 laundries please? Thanks in advance Chris in Melbourne
Thanks Justine, I will contact the School. Next 'hunt' is for Bethlehem School - which was near Mt Maunganui - and which the family also attended in the late 1930's (albeit briefly) - would you happen to have any knowledge of this school's records?
