    1. [nz]Carterton
    2. Adele Pentony-Graham
    3. I have just started reading A Colonist's Gaze The Life of Charles Rooking Carter, written by John E Martin, I noticed a name the other day and decided today to look it up, its so unusual, but it's a real name family from Yorkshire. John and Northend Gooder. 1834-1906. Son of John and Rachel. Migrated to NZ in 1841, But knowing the way John E Martin researches, knew the name would be correct!! But find it interesting to still research the name myself. I have assisted John with his research here in New Zealand and when I was in England in 2004, handed all my research over to him and helped him from time to time since. have my signed copy of the Book at the Book Launch in Carterton last Sunday.. Appears that Northend married a Harriet France in 1856 here in NZ.. wonder where they lived and buried? Carterton here in NZ is named after Charles Rooking Carter, named in 1859. So back to the book. 1. [nz]A photo with 2 different peoples names . . . !
    2. Hello again. Another perplexing problem I have is with a photo that I found on the Nelson Provincial Museum online collection that is listed under the surname of SIXTUS. It is a photo of a man and a woman and a boy. Photo ID 86942. The website is https://collection.nelsonmuseum.co.nz/explore - and enter the number of the photo into the search box. This exact same photo appears in the book "The Extended Community" by George McMurty - on page 104 under the name of John and Alice BRUNING. Unfortunately George has passed away . . . so I do not know the source of the photo. I am trying to work out exactly who these folk are. Is anyone able to help me? Thanks, Beth

    1. [nz]Schildhauer of NELSON (Mrs HARTWIG)
    2. Hello - I am searching for any information regarding Johanna Josephine SCHILDHAUER, who I believe arrived in Nelson sometime in the 10 years between 1864 and 1874. She went on to marry Friedrich Heinrich Gottlieb HARTWIG. She was said to have been from Hannover in Germany - but I cannot find record of her arrival here or any other details except for her death at the age of 84 years in 1930. This puts her birth around 1846. Sadly, it is a name that is not easily spelt and records may not be exactly under her correct surname. Someone had suggested she arrived on the VIOLET but I do not have a year and cannot find her or any name that is anywhere similar on any passenger list that I have found as yet. If anyone has her in their family tree or can shed any light, I would be most appreciative. Thanks, Beth

    2. Adele Pentony-Graham
    3. Now this name came up today on a very early piece of Carterton history, I was actually with a member of our Knowles family in town, she said that name is not our Knowles from Kent, so who was he? 1859 era, any one know please? The Knowles we have in Carterton or Three Mile Bush in the early days, came from Kent. I said to the friend, will let you know if I can find out anything! Adele Clareville.

    3. Have been doing a bit of searching. It was originally called the New Zealand Meat Preserving Company and said to have been the first Preserving Company in new Zealand. In 1901 the premises were leased By an O W Oldham and it became the Woodlands Packing and Canning Co. And they also canned rabbit. I will take your advice and contact the Invercargill Library Archives. 3. Another thought I had - could you be meaning the canning factory at Winton. It was in Gap Road and run by 2 sisters by the name of Thompson they also had a cordial factory in Winton. By the way they canned Rabbits. We could do with something like that again. They were good eating. 3. An examination of of the two Wanganui newspapers of that time indicate that a sea voyages between Wanganui and Picton direct did not occur. To travel between these 2 places one would have to go via Wellington. The best that could be located was a trip by Paddle Steamer "Charles Edward" in the opposite directon (see snippet below) Calculated passage time being 15 hours. The Charles Edward left Picton yesterday morning at 11 o'clock, and arrived here after a smooth passage this morning at 2 o'clock "Wanganui Herald", Issue 4963, 15 January 1883, page 2 > On 15 October 2018 at 16:08 Margaret Parkes wrote: > > > Hi, can anyone please give me some idea how long this trip would have taken and what type of boat? > > Many thanks > Margaret > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the "NZSG-Memlist" group. > > TO POST to this group send email to nzsg-memlist@googlegroups.com > TO LEAVE this group send email to nzsg-memlist+unsubscribe@googlegroups.com (leaving Subject and Body blank) > VISIT this group online at https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__groups.google.com_group_nzsg-2Dmemlist-3Fhl-3Den-3Fhl-3Den&d=DwICaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=-mWZZZeVf-T2XFKEtPE1g25Egq_c7AQAHDafyY9XXQQ&m=ULZ-AU4RSPDUSYQ6qdylWhMa6Nj0cK3_Bd4Ff41sDqg&s=Ft4RfX33suLPljAfSUBSD339ZCi8XGMLRGHGByCE3vA&e= > FOR HELP with accessing archives go to https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__sites.google.com_site_wendyhoward_nzsg-2Dmemlist-2Dcontents&d=DwICaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=-mWZZZeVf-T2XFKEtPE1g25Egq_c7AQAHDafyY9XXQQ&m=ULZ-AU4RSPDUSYQ6qdylWhMa6Nj0cK3_Bd4Ff41sDqg&s=KD22AWTnxY9GHX946kLD_sBVioTcGT9rvnDH6led8YM&e= (includes link to group rules)
