DAVIDSON-LLOYD Hi Annette NZ BDM'S have: Lloyd, Matilda died 1920 aged 63. Reg # 6132. Have you checked this out? As the date fits. Hi Bob Yes I had a look at that but I am leaning more to the Matilda Davidson that died in 1937. I can find no reason for her being down in Nelson. I am sure that I got that death printout but cannot put my hands on it at the moment. I am sure that there was something on it and that was the reason it wasn't filed with my info on Matilda. But thanks for the suggestion. Annette

    1. [nz] Harry William Byers, Jessie Jarrold and baby Fred - when did they arrive in New Zealand - separately or together?
    2. Patricia Byers
    3. I've managed to track my husband's great-grandfather HWB while he still lived in England: his birth information and the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses. Mysteriously he surfaces in NZ on the 1873 - 74 Electoral Roll for the House of Representatives 36. Byers, Harry William Palmerston freehold Section 21, 26 acres, Palmerston. His Intention To Marry notice, dated 6 July 1875, records him as Harry William Byers, bachelor, “roadman”, 34, living at Palmerston North, length of residence 4 years. I know ITMs refer to length of time in the district. I have not been able to find any trace of him between 1861 and 1873. Similarly, the woman he married has been difficult to track. Jessie (variously also Jesse, Jessy. and Jessey) Louisa Jarrold was born on 4 April 1853 at Stanton, Suffolk, England. In 1871 she was recorded as a "cook, domestic" in household of Evelyn P Meadows (44), 13 Cathcart Rd, Kensington, near central London. When Jessie actually arrived in New Zealand has yet to be established. It would appear to have been some time after the date of the 1871 census and Harry's ITM notice in 1874. Harry’s Intention to Marry notice stated Jessie had been in the Palmerston North district for one year prior to her marrying in 1875. Whoever provided her death details stated she had been in New Zealand for 55 years, that is, since about 1872. While at sea on her way to New Zealand, Jessie gave birth to an illegitimate son. When he died on 31 January 1890 of Tb. at the age of 15, according to his death certificate he was known as Frederick William Byers Jarrold. No record of his birth has yet been found. When he was at school at Stoney Creek he was known simply as Fred Byers. Any help gratefully accepted. Paddy

    3. Hi folks, For many years I have been looking for the death of my Gt.grandmother Matilda LLOYD nee DAVIDSON. 1. Matilda christened 1857 Belfast, Ireland. 2. Arrived Auckland NZ, 1872 on the Celestial Queen 3. Married James LLOYD 1879, Auckland, her occupation servant. James occupation, mariner. 4. Lived in Auckland until about 1888. Had four children between 1880 and 1885. 2 died 1882. 5. Family moved to Waiotemarama, Hokianga about 1887/88. Had another child 1891 which died 1892. 6. My grandmother, second living daughter was in Std IV in 1898 at Waiotemarama School 7. Matilda was on the Bay of Island electoral roll in 1900 8. In 1907 James wrote a will in which every thing was left to the eldest daughter, Rachel. (I was told by an elderly lady that knew Gt. aunt Rachel, that her mother had told them that “Jimmy was a grumpy little man and Matilda left him”.)I think she must have taken my grandmother Annie Elizabeth, with her. My grandmother married my grandfather, Charles Clifford in Kihikihi in 1910. How and where did they meet I wonder. Matilda had a brother, Thomas Kilpatrick Davidson who married Elizabeth Grimshaw in 1875 NZ, christened as just Thomas, who was living at Mangapiko, Waipa and then Te Awamutu between 1875 and 1906. He was then in the Mt Roskill, Onehunga and Manurewa area of Auckland between 1911 and 1927. Did she go to her brothers? Is that how my grandparents met? I have not found a death for a Matilda LLOYD that fits but I found a death for a Matilda Davidson that could be her. A Matilda DAVIDSON died Aug 1936 at Auckland Infirmary, Epsom, from 16 Clarence St., Ponsonby. She is recorded as a 80y old spinster. Said she was from Portadown Ireland. Cause of death was senility and cerebral haemorage. The informant was the Undertaker. I made contact with the Undertakers firm but unfortunately they reply was “very poor record keeping that year, have no record of the burial”. Auckland Hospital Board paid for her plot. My question is, “where do I go now?” and if any of these names mean anything to you I would love to hear from you. Thanks for reading this. Annette

    2. Bob Vine
    3. Whati Whati Hoe on the banks of the Waipa River was the name taken from the nearby Maori settlement for the farm owned by James George Berry (my great grand uncle) and his wife Mary (nee Neil). "Maori moving from Auckland and the Manukau Harbour, up the Waikato and Waipa Rivers in their waka, on reaching the rapids, broke their paddles and landed naming the place Whati Whati Hoe meaning Broken Paddles." This is from a paper which lies in the care of the Te Awamutu and District Museum. Both James and Mary were very involved with the Maori, particularly Mary who was granted by Parliament the right to dispense free medicines to the Maori. Mary's interpreter was Arthur Ormsby who I guess was related to the Ormsby recently on the NZSG Council.
