Hi Alan & All: I am told that existing downloaded military personnel files at Archives will continue to be avaliable as a single downloadable PDF file via "Derivative Copy" but that this will not apply to new digitised files. With an ordinary WWI file having say 7 to 15 pages this will mean downloading 7 to 15 files, with a security warning for each and a need to rename each page to something meaningful to me. Reading an online or downloaded file will mean having to open or download and open each page seperately. Plus the display of the page and information on my IE browser has the page or information restricted to a narrow band across the page rather than full-screen. What a pain! Here is comments from another list. Allan You still get the PDF file, it is just hidden a bit. On the top left hand side of the page it says "Preservation Master" and lists the files underneath. Hi Charmaine: I will get the WWI file for James McLean Wilson No 78809 digitised by Archives, I presume that is the one you cannot access! My thanks to Helen Unfortunately there were at least two other men of the same name in NZ at the same time as our Ebenezer, so weeding them out in the newspapers has been challenging. Is there anyone on the list, living in Christchurch, who would check out a grave, and the burial register at the Sydenham Cemetery please ? Ebenezer Forsyth died in the Christchurch Hospital on the 3rd of August 1911, and was buried on the 7th in the Sydenham Cemetery. I have details of his grave Block and Plot number, and suspect it was in a "paupers grave" and that there will not be a headstone, but need to check the grave itself and details from the burial register to see what details were recorded against his burial, and by whom. Ebenezer arrived in NZ in 1860 with another bloke Robert Pringle, who drowned in the Ohow River in 1862. Robert Pringle was a younger brother to Ebenezer's eldest sister's husband. Ebenezer's next younger sister Margaret and her family followed Ebenezer to NZ in late 1861, and settled in Dunedin. Ebenezer did not keep much contact with his family in NZ or back in Scotland; did not marry, and was working as a labourer at the time of his death, aged 77 years. Administration of his estate was granted to the Public Trustee. His sister Margaret is my great grandmother, and we have been hunting for Ebenezer all over the planet, even thinking he may have gone to Canada, but details from family letters have finally shed light on his life, and we can now finally lay him to rest. Thanks Annette, You're right about family secrecy. While we knew that my great grand-aunt existed and had seen photographs of her up until her late teens, no-one seemed to know much after that. Those that would have known her in the family have all passed away now. For a long time we assumed that she must have died young. When I found out she died on 1988 aged 88 this was a surprise! Now I know about her admission to Kingseat the secrecy makes a bit more sense, though it is very sad. Good morning listers, I have recently discovered that my great grand-aunt<http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onmymothersside/huntley/huntleypaulhillfrances.shtml>was committed to Kingseat Hospital in 1945, and I am keen to find out why and for how long. She was committed at age 45 and I know that she passed away in a rest home in Auckland 43 years later in 1988, aged 88. Has anyone had any experience (good, bad or otherwise) obtaining records of past inmates? I'm assuming that records will not be easily available, but am wondering whether they will be downright impossible. Many thanks. p.s. the charmingly named Mental Defectives Act 1911, under which she was committed, makes for interesting reading. It lists six 'classes' of mentally defective persons: 1. Persons of unsound mind 2. Persons mentally infirm 3. Idiots 4. Imbeciles 5. Feeble-minded 6. Epileptics Regards Tracy Pilet The List Guidelines http://new-zealand-l.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NEW-ZEALAND-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
