    1. Re: [nz] Barbadoes St. Cemetery Chapel (Adele Pentony-Graham)
    2. Bryan P
    3. Hello Alan, I’m sorry I go on a bit here: I won’t say I’m an expert on cemeteries and the photography, but have had some experience. I carry a ‘cemetery kit’ in my car. Yes - the family nod their heads and point! It has a toothbrush, a wire brush (you can get toothbrush sized ones from gardening centres - they use them for rose bushes!), general hearth brush and/or scrubber, scraper, spray bottle of water, and if you’re in the mood, the likes of 30 seconds or Wet and Forget (I already mix/dilute it), if you want to do a big clean up. Some aficionados are averse to such cleaners, citing the fact that stones must age. But from my point of view the deceased and his progeny wrote on the headstones so people could read them. So I spruce up headstones as much as I can. Photography: better to do on a cloudy day, and also better if the stone is wet. You need a broad view of the grave and a close up. Barbadoes St Cemetery specifically: The earthquakes have really knocked it round. However the Council has done a lot to lay the fallen stones down and prop them up off the ground as they have done with a lot of their other cemeteries. In this cemetery, there are a lot of graves unmarked, particularly on the Catholic and non-conformist side of the road. As you drive down it’s Catholics, etc. on the right and Anglicans on the left. So you need to come prepared with a map or guide, or at least your plot/row etc. There is a guide map at the cemetery entrance to get you started. As and aside, I have my little pioneer James Patrick MAHER, as I call him, died accidentally aged 6 in 1882. Some kind soul had laid his perfectly legible stone down on his grave, out of which has sprouted a large cabbage tree. On the Catholic side!! ???? Any help you want on your Christchurch visit, just email me. I’m 5 minutes away. Are you a Channel Island De La Mare? Regards, Bryan Sent from Windows Mail

    1. Re: [nz] RECORDS FROM CHRISTCHURCH HOSPITAL (& Seacliff)
    2. John Wilson
    3. Hi Sue: Re your ggmother, many Seacliff records are held at Archives NZ, Dunedin, although permission has to be obtained from the District Health Board. See address in Archives Research Guide No 6, Mental Health p7-8: http://archives.govt.nz/research/guides http://archives.govt.nz/research/guides/mental-health I don't know about Public Hospitals for your gmothers death in 1910. But some deaths in Public and particularly Mental Hospitals may result in an inquest. Deaths at Porirua and Avondale Mental Hospitals (and others?) resulted in regular batches of inquests every month or less in the early 20th century, even if the death was expected eg "senile decay", hence can be found in the index books for inquests at Archives NZ, Wellington. Records of all inquests are held there; some names can be found indexed in Archway, though I would not like to say how many years are indexed. I do not know of a hospital graveyard at Porirua Hospital, and think that burials would be in a public or perhaps church graveyard. But burial records (BR in the NZSG index) may be missing for burials a hundred years ago, and only a stone gravestone would survive until the 1980s when various NZSG branches did transcriptions of them (MI or Monumental Inscriptions in the NZSG indexes). Hence finding records of any burials a hundred years or more is less likely, though certainly possible for some. 3. Hi Colleen, Even if the person died in Brisbane if they held property in New Zealand there may be a copy of the will or documents relating to probate here in New Zealand so I would check Archway first to see if there is any reference. New Zealand probates are held in the branches of Archives (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin) which all hold court records, although up to c1950 Public Trust wills were probated through the Wellington court. See Research Guide No 2, Personal Identity p8-11: http://archives.govt.nz/research/guides And while each will (or intestate estates) has its own file, not all of the names of the person involved are indexed in Archway; so for some courts/periods you will need to check a paper index book etc for whatever is the appropriate court. This might apply to both early and some post-1980-81 wills/probates (and also to other subjects like divorces). Some of the wills etc are going online (via the LDS?) these will only be a minority, and most files have to be seen at the branch of Archives NZ holding it. 3. Thank you to all of you who replied with ideas and information. I did appreciate the time and effort you went to. Unfortunately it was the SAYWELL side I needed as I have all the TOSLAND side of the family. It was a SAYWELL in Taranaki who said he was related to the TOSLANDS so needed to find who the NZ Saywells were descended from. It therefore looks as if this will remain a story. Thanks anyway Wendy Is there anyone researching the name SAYWELL? It is believed that a SAYWELL family in NZ somewhere - possibly Taranaki, is related to Joseph Saywell TOSLAND ( 1848- 1927 )whose mother was Eliza SAYWELL the daughter of Joseph SAYWELL a blacksmith in Middlesex/ London area. Joseph Saywell TOSLAND lived and farmed in Taranaki. I would like to prove this family story one way or another if I can, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Wendy

    2. Adele Pentony-Graham
    3. Have located a lovely article on the above, out of NZ Freelance Nov.1st 1950. Historic little building must be demolished. it stood peacefully in the centre of grassy lawns and shady English trees, The Avon river, remaining headstones Barbadoes St Cemetery, the oldest in Canterbury. Built in 1863 the simple wooden building has good lines and the interior was unexpectedly striking. Stained glass windows dated 1864, wonder what happened to them, when this lovely chapel was demolished? Adds made in England. The Centre window is dedicated to the memory of Bishop Henry Harper, the first Anglican bishop of the infant colony, who consecrated the 22 acres of ground set aside for the first cemetery, I know that Henry Tancred is buried in this cemetery, brother to Sir Thomas Tancred, latter buried at Old Napier Cemetery. Its quite a long article but so interesting to read.. perhaps Beverley would welcome this for her collection? It has a photograph of the said chapel. Adele Clareville Taphophile

    1. [nz] an Irish born woman who went to Tasmania via New Zealand
    2. Patricia Byers
    3. Recently a friend told be about a nun buried in Tunnack in central Tasmania. Her name was Sister Vincent Bowler. She was born Margaret Bowler in Co. Kerry in Ireland in November 1861. Her parents were Patrick Bowler, a farmer, and Deborah Brosnohan. At some stage she migrated with her parents to New Zealand. For some reason she moved to Tasmania and entered the Sisters of St Joseph at Westbury on 25 May, 1888; she was 27. I found a quite graphic description of her religious profession in The New Zealand Tablet (18 July 1890, page 3). She was the first Josephite nun to be professed in Tasmania and taught in a small school in the small isolated Midlands town. She received high commendation from the school inspector when he visited. She died on 9 December 1919; she was buried at Tunnack in St Brigid's Cemetery. Can our Rootsweb sleuths discover more about her before she left for Australia or other members of her family? Thanks Paddy
