I've had info at Freepages since 1998. Some of my pages are that old in fact. Mostly I've uploaded "book" reports of linked descendants generated by PAF. That makes a home page for each report, so I learned basic HTML to be able to develop one master home page to rule them all, and do other things. As Tracy says, it certainly helps to know a bit of simple HTML if you are doing webpages. Basic HTML is easy to learn. You can have your first page up and running in just a few minutes. I still remember how gobsmacked I was to discover how easy a simple page of text is to create when previously i thought it must be an arcane science. Not so. I learned very basic HTML online at this now seriously old website http://www.math.unm.edu/writingHTML/tut/index.html but there must be others out there. These days you can use software to create a website without having to figure out the nuts and bolts of a lot of HTML commands, but I think it still helps to know the very basic nuts and bolts. If nothing else it will greatly inform one's searches on the internet when it comes to exploring a website in certain circumstances (eg folder structure). The utility of the PAF "book" style presentation on my Freepages is that anyone googling for a particular name can find it on my pages. Not many use my guestbook, most contact me directly after finding someone on my pages because it is obvious from the context that we have some kind of connection. I need to start updating and using my Freepages properly to present what I have done over the years, now that I have deliberately slowed my research (about 29 years' worth). I may need to make use of other websites, eg to archive photos, large files, databases at searching sites, and link to them from Freepages. Helen The only way is to unsubscribe with your current address, and re-subscribe with your Firefox address. However, it looks to me as if you have a Yahoo address, which you use through Outlook Express, and not an actual OE address. Instructions to unsub are at the bottom of this message, and all messages to the list. Hello All I have just added the Births, marriages and deaths of May 1983. do email for a newspaper copy of anything you find quoting the date of the paper and the snippet number. Beverley Evans Christchurch NZ http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~ashleigh/1870-1908/1983.May.Christchurch.Press.BMD.html
Thanks everyone for the input. How do you get Google and Bing to know who you are on Rootsweb? Olwyn’s site came up. But others I’ve found don’t register. Wendy, how do you get your site recognised? My present homepages site is in the first 10 results of a search. Try Parrott or Fitzpatrick family. For me people searching names on search engines is the most important aspect of internet genealogy. A couple I tried on Rootsweb didn’t show up in the first 10 pages of results. Unfortunately I cannot afford the luxury of a paid domain and hosting, so I may have to go with Rootsweb. Regards, Bryan Sent from Windows Mail

I'm hoping anyone with advice for Bryan will please share it on the list as Wendy has done. There must be several of us with similar questions. I use Rootsweb's Freepages. As the name implies, it's free! And it is not reliant on our ISP, which could change at any time should we get a better deal elsewhere. http://accounts.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index.cgi?op=show&page=freagree.htm You are not restricted to genealogy there. Within your own account, you have 11 folders for a variety of topics, which you can use or not as you choose. My pages are at http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/ Hope this helps. :-) Wendy Bryan P said the following on 7/04/2014 3:52 p.m.: > I’m wondering whether people have experience with any website hosters in NZ for family history, and if they could advise on the best/better? I am looking for descendants of Clifton Worsley WINTERINGHAM MS/3349 and Eveline Ada Gladys nee EVANS (nurse QAINSR). Clifton and Eveline both served in the Imperial Forces, married in England and emigrated to NZ after WW1. Also descendants of Ernest Spencer SWINDELLS 3/958 Trooper, and Vera nee ANDERSON (nurse). Ernest served in NZ Army, Vera was a nurse in the Imperial Forces. They married in NZ in 1921. Information is needed for our Waihi Cemetery walk on Anzac Day. Thanks Robyn Ramsey
I agree with Wendy. I have used use Rootsweb's Freepages since 1998. The FreePages sites are used primarily by individuals and small associations. The only draw back I see is the roots ancestry banner that you have to have on the pages and some people are nervous about their AUP. But it is the best deal at the moment. It is free. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/rootsweb/aup.html http://accounts.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nzbound/ I also like the search engine and the guestbook on the site. Dear Moira, The link to old NZ newspapers online is here: http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast Unfortunately they finish in 1945, so they're too early for most of your search. The era you're looking at isn't covered well by online newspapers - there is Newztext but they are mainly more recent than you need: http://www.knowledge-basket.co.nz/newztext/welcome.html Old NZ photos are covered by Timeframes at the National Library: http://natlib.govt.nz/items?utf8=%E2%9C%93&text=timeframes or by Digital NZ - http://www.digitalnz.org/ There is also Auckland Heritage: http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/HeritageImages/index.htm Hope this helps in some way - Jeanette ----- Original Message ----- From: "M Doherty" <mo1rauk@yahoo.com> To: <new-zealand@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 07, 2014 3:18 AM Subject: [nz] CUMMER (KUMMER) family, Otorohanga and Otahuhu Hello list Perhaps someone could point me in the right direction for online sources to find any NZ newspaper mentions and/or photos of Albert and Angela CUMMER, especially of her while in the Otorohanga area. I have BDMs, burials and probates already. As I am in the UK I am unable to visit NZ libraries or archives. Albert CUMMER, a Seed Merchant living at Otorohanga, married Angela SULLIVAN, a nurse, in 1938 at Mount Eden Baptist Church, Auckland. When he died in 1949 he was described as a Nurseryman. When she died in 1961 she was living at Otahuhu and is buried with her husband in Otorohanga Cemetery. Her obituary mentions that a guard of honour was formed by members of the N.Z.R.N.A. and W.S.R.S.A. at her funeral service in Otorohanga. She was an honorary member of the Te Kuiti Branch of N.Z.R.N.A. and transferred to the Otorohanga Branch in 1959. She volunteered to give nursing assistance at the time of the Napier earthquake. Hi Helen & All: She is on the Burial Locator CD; ie it is safer to look for a surname rather than specifying the full name. And the WCC website says Winifred Mabel Forbes died aged 67y on 8/6/1967, service (crematorium) 12/6/1967. http://wellington.govt.nz/services/community-and-culture/cemeteries/cemeteries-search The Burial Locator CD also has a Winnifred Elsie Forbes (also WCC ie Wellington), died 24/3/1968, cremated 26/3/1968. I am looking for photograph please rather than any written material. Joseph Francis MCMAHON/MACMAHON (Macmahon, lower case second m in some articles) was born Bendigo Victoria. Together with his three brothers they owned theatres in NZ and Australia and were also involved in early cinemas. Joseph died in Auckland in November 1918 and is buried at Waikaraka. There are many obituaries and articles in PapersPast and other publications, probate, burial records etc etc re Joseph however I am very keen to locate a photo of Joseph. I have looked at the Nat Lib Photograph collection without success. Is anyone able to locate a photo of Joseph for me please? With thanks Jenny
Hi Lori, All your questions can be answered by taking a look around the site https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/ Look under the "Data Collected" option in the menu down the left-hand side of the screen. For each type of event they tell you what information you will find on a printout versus what you'll find on a certificate. Always get the printout for family history purposes. Only get the certificate when you need it for legal purposes. The "Data Collected" area also tells you exactly what data should have been collected at the time. Some earlier events (eg marriages before about 1880) don't record enough information to be of practical use for us. Also look at the "Payments & Products" option on the web site, for a description of the various 'products' on offer here. You'll find more information under the other menu items, which will probably answer questions you haven't thought to ask yet. Take a little time to check it out properly. Hope this helps. :-) Wendy kiwi said the following on 6/04/2014 11:14 a.m.: > I hope I am on the right page.
