    1. [nz] Church Register cards from Christchurch City Library.COMMENT
    2. Stephen Thwaite
    3. Yes - agreed - wait for the lawyers letter... If it arrives and is serious, you could then get definite legal advice pro or con - till then it's just really all  hearsay  + speculation isn't it? I guess that libraries have to be paranoid about such things - have you read the notices they put on their photocopiers?? Regards Stephen //// From: Kevin Walker <clartiere@gmail.com> To: NZ List <NEW-ZEALAND@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, 11 April 2014 11:09 AM Subject: Re: [nz] Church Register cards from Christchurch City Library - please read this   Since the ChCh Library admits it's not the owner of the intellectual property rights, it might not be their place to tell Beverley to remove her transcripts. They might be able to stop her doing more, which we all agree is a shame. But the owner of rights needs to be found and Beverley can negotiate with them. She is not displaying images, just transcripts. That's her original work. I hope Beverley will leave her work where it is for now, pending contact with the actual owner of the rights (if such exists). Kevin -----Original Message----- From: new-zealand-bounces@rootsweb.com Sent: 10 April 2014 23:03 I'm with Cheryl on this one. It has taken the library too long to up and say something. Why have they not said anything before now. 2. I am also with you Beverley. It is a fantastic resource - and on your site especially for people who are not from Christchurch. I think you should ask who owns the rights on the cards or on the information contained. Please don't throw it out from your personal file. Was there any signage indicating you could not do this? And as the information is all past 50 years ( I think, for church registers)is it then not public domain?? We should mount a protest. Maybe also just list names on the memlist site? There must be a way around this, and preferably to do so with the "blessing" of  the church group which is offended. I doubt that it is the library   On Thursday, 10 April 2014 10:32 PM, skut <skut@xtra.co.nz> wrote: Hi Beverley Did they tell you who actually own the intellectual rights if so approach them. 3. Unless a passenger was onshipping to NZ from farther places, usually through a major shipping line and passenger records were transmitted from departure ports, you are unlikely to find her.. It is far less likely she would be named on a local steamer from Australia to NZ. Some records from Victoria Aus to NZ are available. But I expect you have checked them, If you look in TROVE you will find daily advertisments from shipping lines wanting passengers to NZ. My Howe family arrived in the Bay of Islands 1839 HOW? as brother in law was a ships Master, no doubt they came undocumented with him. Even as late as within the last few years an aquaintance with a prostitute daughter, who had been deported from Aus, in few weeks later had returned to Aus via some crews quarters.cheers penne From: "Patricia Byers" <petpad.byers@gmail.com> To: "NZ Rootsweb" <New-Zealand@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 10, 2014 9:56 AMSubject: [nz] how did Jessey Jarrold get to NZ? I have searched shipping lists - maybe I’m not doing it correctly - but it’s very frustrating not being able to pin her down. I have come across surname variations for other family members: Jarrald and Garrold in censuses in England. Here’s hoping. Paddy Tasmania

    3. Hi Sue If you ordered a printout of your grandmother's death registration from the Internal Affairs Department, and they haven't sent you a copy of the whole entry then I suggest that you email them and ask for another copy. Alternatively - or perhaps additionally - if you email me your grandmother's name and date of death I would be happy to see if there is anything at the Christchurch office of Archives NZ. 3. Yesterday I was very happily searching Rootsweb World connect, looking up Family trees for odd pieces of information. This afternoon I go to my "Favourite" and land in Ancestry and this asks me a stupid question of "How old is the person". It does not allow you to go any further unless that question is answered - I have no idea how old he is, as he was born in 1840. Could some kind person please explain, what happen in the last 24 hours to Rootsweb World Connect. That was an really good site to find odd pieces, then double checking them against other sources and now every thing is in Ancestry. Many thanks to any help Pam http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~shamere/

    3. Hi, This is a subject I have been looking at and find it a bit of a worry. For anyone who does not know what this is - An encrypting virus encrypts all your data so you cant access it and demands a ransom to get it back. Some people pay and recover their data, others pay and dont get their data. It appears the viruses are getting smarter and if you have your back up permanently attached to your computer, that can be encrypted too. The latest I have heard is an attempt at encrypting which included the dropbox file, so if successful it would mean your computer would up date dropbox and encrypt that also. If this can happen then any cloud storage is at risk where it is in sync with your computer. eg Google and Ancestory. As this is an issue for many on the list I wondered if we have a member who may be able to post some helpful hints to avoid a disaster. Regards, Calvin

    3. Hi Calvin If you keep a back up separate to your computer and preferably away from home, should you get the encryption problem you would be covered for most eventualities Frankly it would be wise to do so anyway as you would suffer the same problem should some ne'er do well steals your computer or god forbid your house burns down, floods or whatever Neither should you trust to just one back up, back ups can fail or be corrupt themselves A lot depends upon your circumstances and how important data is to you, but data storage is relatively cheap these days compared to a few short years ago Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 09/04/2014 04:32, Calvin Berg wrote: > Hi, > This is a subject I have been looking at and find it a bit of a worry. > For anyone who does not know what this is - An encrypting virus encrypts > all your data so you cant access it and demands a ransom to get it > back. 3. There’s been a great deal of correspondence on this. Thank you to those who replied and informed. Overall I think I will probably end up making my own domain, because: It seems Rootsweb Freepages don’t readily answer Google searches and that to my mind is what genealogy name searches need. Most ISP’s now don’t offer free homepages - my reason for changing (I’m running out of byte space). Family History websites don’t have too many byte-heavy-handed processes so are a little cheaper. They are essentially factual. I hope the exchanges have been helpful for some. It may be presumptuous of me but here is what I have so far: http://tinyurl.com/ykwrgkz Regards, Bryan Sent from Windows Mail

    3. Hi Bryan, I don't do anything in particular in the way of attracting search engines. I know enough to know that can be an entire topic on its own! It could be that the Freepages sites you've looked at were not particularly well constructed, and so did not contain elements that would help a search engine to find it. I don't know enough to tell you what those elements might be. There is a good peer-to-peer mailing list for Freepages, which you'll be subscribed to automatically when your Freepages account is created. That's a good place to be asking this sort of question. Hope this helps. :-) Wendy Bryan P said the following on 8/04/2014 16:11: > Thanks everyone for the input. > > How do you get Google and Bing to know who you are on Rootsweb? Olwyn’s site came up. 3. Hi Helen Just to clarify, neither Outlook Express nor Firefox have email addresses, you are currently using a Yahoo address Unless you wish to or have to you could retain the same address and download to Thunderbird on your computer If you liked Outlook Express and want a similar experience in Windows 7 or 8, consider trying Thunderbird, from the same stable as Firefox Very similar in operation to OE but better in fact ================= If you mean change the email address you use for mailing lists? You would need to unsubscribe the old address and then subscribe the new address to each list What I would suggest is going to the Rootsweb home page http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ Scroll down and under Help menu select Password Central Enter the email address you usually use in the box Enter a tick in the box "to which lists am I subscribed?" Then scroll down and click Email me my info Which will send you an email with a listing of all the lists to which that address is subscribed Each list name will also include the address to post to and the address to unsubscribe That way its easy to keep track of the process NB to unsubscribe you need to send to the address with "request" in it Send a blank email from the old address to the "request" address for the list in question, with only the word unsubscribe in the subject line and body of the mail, and no other words Then send a blank email from the new address to the "request" address to each list you want to subscribe to, with only the word subscribe in the subject line and body of the mail, and no other words =============== Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 08/04/2014 05:49, Helen Mcnamara wrote: > Hi Can someone please tell me v e r y s l o w l y how I change my > Rootsweb mailing lists email address from my Outlook Express email > addresses to my Firefox address?
