    3. There are none buried in the Tasman District which would include both the German settlements at Ranzau (Hope) and Upper Moutere. There are a couple buried in Wakapuaka Cemetery in Nelson city (see below) which are very likely to be related. You can look at them on Nelson City Council website - just type in Nelson City Council Cemetery database on GOOGLE and that should bring it up. The various dates are dates of death, dates of burial and dates plots were purchased - often the date of purchase was the last thing that happened. If you can get someone to look in the Nelson Evening Mail for death notices around that time that may be of some help to you - you may find out if they were a couple or if there were any children. 1. [nz] Mystery family
    2. Calvin Berg
    3. Hi, This family we know about in NZ including the parents arrival in NZ. We have some theories about them back in England but no proof. While searching thru papers past we have found an unpleasant report of the eldest daughter being raped. - as per link below. http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=CHP18720323.2.21&srpos=1&e=01-01-1872-31-03-1872--10-CHP-1----2Sarah+Ellen+Jones-- In the text it refers to ( quote) " The childs father Edward Jones, the mother Jane Jones, and a sister were examined" The only sister was at the time 5 years of age. Would the court have "examined" her as a witness, or could this be a sister of Edward or Jane we do not know about. This leads to another question - would there still be some records around that might help. I have asked the Rangiora Library, but did not get any help there. Does anyone have any thoughts about where to next. Thanks, Calvin

    3. Hello Beth. There is some information on the NZSG Version 5 CD and it looks as though they lived near Upper Moutere. A number of German families settled in that area in the mid-1800s. I suggest you get in touch with the Motueka Historical Association or the Nelson Branch of the NZSG as they may have further information. Will send contact details off list. My thanks to both you for your responses. Your answers have been very helpful. I've checked out the Dunedin Cemetery Website and now I have Anrew's burial details. It looks like Andrew and Clara may have seperated some time before 1946. I can't find a death for Clara which suggests she may have remarried also. 3. Hello all - happy Mother's Day!! I am related to the SCHILDHAUER family of Nelson - I do not have much information, and admit that I am struggling with inconsistency and contradiction . . . ! The few details that I have are from my grandmother who passed away some years ago, and I have found nothing for the SCHILDHAUER family in NZ on the internet. I know they originally came from Hanover in Germany sometime in the mid-1800's and I only have the name of Wilhelm ( or William, born circa 1858/1860ish ) . . . So I am hoping to have some luck through this forum, and would be overwhelmed to hear from Schildhauer relatives if there are any out there. Perhaps they can put me straight as regards to the family tree. Thanks in advance, Beth, Auckland

    1. [nz] Re NZ Indexes BDM on Ancestry
    2. Thank you Heather for the information Ancestry now have the NZ BDM indexes. NZ Birth Indexes 1840-1950 NZ Marriage Indexes 1840-1950 NZ Death Indexes 1848-1980 As you said the information has been taken from the RGO Microfiche and yes the old RGO Folio Numbers are there and in some cases depending on who has transcribed the information, the place of birth/registration is also recorded. While this is another great resource and I am happy to have access to it, anyone who has used Ancestry will know about their reasonably high error rate with transcriptions. I do not mean this to be a criticism but just a word of warning. Many years ago I transcribed the year by year Birth Registrations (including Folio Numbers) for the surname SUGRUE from the RGO Fiche. While I appreciate this is not a common name, today while checking the information on Ancestry against what I transcribed from the RGO fiche and cross-checking it with the DIA Birth Registrations, in the first 28 records Ancestry had only transcribed 19 correctly with the spelling of SUGRUE. There were 9 transcription errors out of 28 with the name being recorded as SUGNUE 3 times, SURGUE 4 times and SUGRAE twice. That is a 33% error rate. So if you do not find what you are looking for the first time you may need to try alternatives. There were also two transcription errors with the birthplaces. In two instances I have the birth certificates. One certificate records the birth at Belfield Orari where the same record on Ancestry has the birth occurring at Cust. The second certificate records the birth at Timaru while Ancestry has the same birth occurring at Arrowtown! Jenny
