Hi Alan: The New Zealand Gazette regularly listed men who were called up under the Military Service Act, 1916. They were arranged by Recruiting District eg No 13, Dunedin; No 14 Southland; No 15, North Otago; or No 16, Clutha. By 1918 numbers were low (the "crisis" in recruiting), and in a list selected "by lot" from Class B of the Second Division dated 24 July most districts had only one or two names, and nine for Auckland District (No 1). The lists have full name, occupation and address, so it could be worth searching for Central Otago names (which Recruiting District?) in the Gazette if you are listing men from the area or trying to identify names on a memorial. The NZ Gazettes in PDF form at Archives or libraries are readily searchable. I suppose some of those listed would fail the medical or appealed so did not necessarily go into the NZDF. I understand grounds for appeal included hardship to family or employer, conscientious objection etc. Re soldiers who did not go overseas, one of the "confidential" files included returns of those who served in New Zealand and were thought deserving of some honour Don't know that they ever got one though! One served in Base records. Quite a few were training new recruits at camps like Trentham or Featherston. Those who arrived in German Samoa after 30 April 1914 got the British War Medal but not the Victory Medal as it was garrison duty not a war zone. Likewise service in Britain only; they qualified for the British War Medal as they had gone "over the seas". I think some of the Samoa Relief Forces were not passed as medically suitable for "active service" in a war zone. Yours, John Wilson > Hello John, > Thank you for checking the files out and for your information. Hi All: The WWI NZSG CD has quite a number, 19, of John Currie entries (NZEF & Reserves, though some men will be listed twice). There is one entry for John Currie (last address Masterton) who is shown as a defaulter with NZEF No 10331. The Cenotaph database has No 10331 as William Edwards, who did go overseas with the 12th reinforcements, and he also has No 10331 in Archway. So was the John Currie arrested one of the 7 John Currie who were in the NZEF, or was he listed under another name after the arrest when he was handed back to the Army?. NB: John Currie; Nos 6/4018,11/988, 16075, 25676, 45292, 23/1606, 25374; last two not on CD as John Currie. Excluding John Currie with a middle name. *Timaru Herald*, 2 August 1917, Page 7 DESERTER FROM THE 9th REINFORCEMENTS BEFORE THE COURT YESTERDAY The recent police campaign in connection with the enrolment of reservists, a man giving his name as Marks John was accosted in Fairlie by a constable and asked to produce his certificate. This, he said, was in his portmanteau, then in Timaru. He came to the latter place shortly afterwards, and was again accosted by the police. Failing to satisfy the constable by his answers to questions put to him, he was taken into custody, and was brought before the Court in Timaru on July 20th, charged with, being a reservist at the time of the enrolment of the New Zealand Reserve, he did answers questions put to him in a wilfully misleading manner, contrary to the War Regulations Act. 1915. On the application of the police he was remanded till July 28th, as it was stated that the case was likely to develop into more serious charges being laid against the accused. On July 28th, when the accused was again before the Court, a further remand was asked for. Senior Sergeant Egan stating that accused had made a confession that he was a deserter from the New Zealand Forces, and that his real name was John Currie. At Court yesterday, when accused was brought up for the third time, having been lodged in the cells since his arrest, Sub-Inspector Hastie said that it had been ascertained that accused had gone into camp with the 9th Reinforcements, but immediately prior to the embarkation of that draft for the front he had deserted, and had not been heard of till arrested. He also had an alias as Poddie [Paddie]. When charged with the offence the accused pleaded guilty. The Magistrate said he would do nothing with him but ordered him to be handed over to the military authorities. A member of the New Zealand Military Police was present and took charge of the deserter, who will be taken to Wellington immediately.

Email the details and I'll see what I can do. Some files that used to be available for viewing - and that the website says (or used to say) have no restriction - are now restricted :-( At the worst case, one may now have to apply to the High Court for access, but we'll cross that bridge if we get to it. In my database I have Susan MEMBERY married to Robert Craig GARDINER 1877 at Picton. They had six children one of whom was William John Membery GARDINER who married Ellen (Nellie) MCDOWELL who was sister to my grandmother Martha MCDOWELL who married Percy DILLON. Nellie and Martha's parents were John Charles MCDOWELL & Jane WARNER. My database has it that Susan MEMBERY was the daughter of William MEMBERY & Elizabeth PHILLIPS . Here's an old 2000 NZ List email that I copied to my notes section re Susan MEMBERY (it's all I have re MEMBERY): From: "Philip Creed" Subject: [NZ Mailing List ] Gardiner / Membery Date: Wed, 4 Oct 2000 In response to Darryl Taylor's request : Susan MEMBERY who married Robert GARDINER was probably a daughter of William and Elizabeth MEMBERY, whose descendants and ancestry have been well documented by John CATLEY in his book : The MEMBERY family : from Somerset to Wellington, New Zealand / compiled [prepared] by John CATLEY.
