    3. Hi Graham I have the same situation with my grandfather. He lived in Southland, yet was in the Auckland Regiment. This was toward the end of the war, 1918. When I asked the same question, the reply was that they simply put new men where they were required to fill the gaps. 1. [nz] John James Garrett Thank You
    2. Robyn Clarke
    3. Thank you Ken for your information about Dorothy Martha Weight. I have since found she actually was Dorothy Martha Willding who immigrated to NZ from Stoke upon Trent in 1922 with her sister Mabel as domestics. Thereafter she married William Henry Weight in 1926 in NZ.... She was born to parents Samuel Willding and wife Martha in 1892 in Stoke upon Trent. After she married John James Garrett they are found back in Stoke upon Trent around 1970. Cheers, Robyn

    3. I see fields of this crop growing when driving around the lower North Island. Some one has said that it did not grow as far north as the Waikato. That makes me wonder if it prefers the colder climes and therefore the central core of the stalk it is sweeter when it is grown right down south. If that is so, it would account for the differing memories of it’s sweetness. Cheers Desma Bowman On 6/06/2014, at 2:06 PM, Graham Hoult <g.hoult@igrin.co.nz> wrote:

    3. Hello Everyone, I have found a new member of the GARRETT family. He was a Seaman called JOHN JAMES GARRETT b. 1886 Isle of Man, yes, brother of WILLIAM JOSEPH GARRETT of Nelson, NZ. I have found that he and his wife lived in 24A Kilbirnie Cres., Wellington East....Mount Victoria Supplimentary Roll from 1946-1949. I have also found a Marriage Index for him but no Bride given....on Ancestry.com. Year 1946 New Zealand. Folio No. 1736. Her Christian name was DOROTHY MARTHA ?.......as per the Electoral Rolls of 1946 and 1949. He was an Able Seaman for over 36 years, eventually they both settled back in England I believe, as I found them back in Southampton in 1951. However, I would really love to know Dorothy Martha's maiden name..... Would someone possibly have a record of that marriage in 1946? I don't think there were any children of this Marriage, but have no proof....one way or another at this stage. TIA, Robyn Australia
