Many thanks to all who help me locate my missing nun. It is amazing what you find with the miss spelling, wrong dates and the order in which her names are used. Thank you all very much for your help. Pam New Zealand Herald 15 January 1896 Sister Mary Magdalen Maney, who died at the Thorndon Convent, Wellington, on Friday last, came to the colony in 1851, and at the age of 16 devoted herself to the cause of the education of Maori girls, for whom Governor Grey had built the Providence attached to the Convent. She spent 45 years in the service of like good works in St. Mary's Convent, having stood high in the estimation of the late Bishop Viard, whom she attended on his deathbed. She will be long regretted by the Catholics of Wellington, among whom are many mothers of families who found in her an able instructress in youth and a friend and adviser in their late years. Deceased was buried at Karori, a large assemblage following her to the grave, where the Very Rev. Father Dawson read the burial service.

One of my uncles also had a traction engine near Gisborne about the same time, but it proved to be too heavy for the roads around the area and was last heard of rusting somewhere near Tokomaru Bay!! yours have probably met the same fate unless someone has preserved them. This happened with my father too - he was born in Kaitaia and had never been further south than Gisborne when he enlisted, but as it was 1917 and reinforcements were wanted, he was attached to the Canterbury Regiment!! Oddly though, his brother, who joined up right at the beginning of the war, was also in the Canterbury Regiment - I've got no explanation for that, although he was working in Taranaki when he enlisted, which is a little further south than Kaitaia! Hello Pam A religious name is not the same as a legal name. Sister Mary Magdalene would have been known to the people of Wellington by her religious name but her death will be recorded in official records by her legal name of Hannah Mary MANEY. Papers Past shows that she was buried on 5 January 1896 at Karori Cemetery, Wellington. Her death notice and funeral notice both appear in the Evening Post on 4 January 1896 and there is an obituary for her in the Evening Post of 7 January 1896. If you can't find her death on the BDM website or the Karori Cemetery website then it is probably because of a mistranscription of her surname. The people in the Karori Cemetery office are very helpful and if you contact them with the name, date and details then I'm sure they will be able to provide you with whatever details they have. Her death notice says she died at St Mary's Convent, Hill St, Thorndon. As it happens, I attended St Mary's College, Hill St, for a couple of years. The nuns at that College were members of the Order of Sisters of Mercy. I'm away from home at present but I have a book on that parish and will look to see if Sister MM is mentioned. Also there is a large burial plot for the Sisters of Mercy in the same row as my grandparents' grave at Karori Cemetery. There are a lot of headstones on that plot, but I don't recall seeing any as old as 1896. I'm not certain but I seem to recall that many of the individual sister's plots have been reused over the years. Again the Karori Cemetery office will be able to give you the details of the usage/ reusage of individual plots within the larger Sisters of Mercy 'plot'. Next time I'm at Karori Cemetery - I'll have a look for the grave - but as I say, I suspect that it will have been reused for the burial of another nun. For further info about Sister Mary Magdalene, you might like to contact the Wellington Catholic Archivist, Sister M de Porres RSM, email <archives@wn.catholic.org.nz> Hope this helps Angela
Many thanks for all the help. she has been found in Karori Cemetery under the name of Mary Madgalen MANEY. Only they have an error in the year should be 1896 but they have 1996 Appreciate all the fast response to my query. Pam
What name would I find a nun registered in the BDM records or the burial records. She was born Hannah Mary MANEY 23 Jan 1834 London England. Died 3 Jan 1896 Wellington. Her other name was Sister Mary Madgalene and she was a nun in Wellington for 36 years. Just before her mother died in 1906 she visited her daughters grave in Wellington. Any help would be much appreciated Pam
