    1. Re: [nz] ELIJAH BYTHELL

    3. We've been waiting to hear from anyone interested in the Elijah Bythell enquiry. There are a number of Family Trees on Ancestry.com which relate to members of his Family, both in the UK and in Victoria and NZ. On one particular Tree there are a couple of newspaper items from NZ relating to his time there...... To add to his own history, after the premature death of his first wife Caroline Alice Gaskill in December 1859 in Yackandandah, Victoria, one child Jane Bythell surviving, he then married a lady called MARTHA EDWARDS, a Spinster.....19 November 1860 in Yackandandah. MARTHA was from Warminster, Wiltshire and had arrived as a domestic servant with her older sister into Melbourne. One child was born to this couple, LYDIA MARY BYTHELL in 1862 in Yackandandah. From this time, it seems Martha was left by ELIJAH BYTHELL who pursued greener pastures in NZ. A Newspaper account of a matter (dated 6th June 1871-Colonist) in the Supreme Court of NZ is found in which he is named as Co-respondent in the case Thomas v Thomas and Bythell. Another female child called Mary Ann Bythell, was born in NZ after Elijah's arrival, to a married woman called Thomas during an illegal marriage to Elijah. Thereafter he married again, a young lady Jessie Alexandria Melbourne in Blenheim, who had been born the same year Elijah had married Martha Edwards......1860. His second wife MARTHA BYTHELL died in Orange, N.S.W. December 1892. Her daughter Lydia Mary Bythell married also in Orange, N.S.W. Martha's eldest sister also arrived in Australia in 1860 one month before Martha's marriage to Elijah Bythell and settled in Orange N.S.W. with her husband and 8 children...... No doubt that is how Martha ended up in Orange N.S.W. with her daughter Lydia. Her step-daughter Jane Bythell, it seems remained in Yackandandah, where she married. As I said before, we are not related to this family......we came upon Martha's broken headstone and grave in Orange Cemetery N.S.W. one day, whilst looking for my own ancestors. Her surname was unusual and similar to my husband's ancestors called BETHELL. We then decided to trace this lady's life to see if indeed she had been related to the Bethell clan that we know. She was not. But our continuing search for ELIJAH BYTHELL showed up many turns and twists in his life.......and in the end, in another twist he became the Mayor of Blenheim....... 3. Can anyone in Christchurch please help us to find three of the births of the five children of Charles and Charlotte (nee THOMAS) HARVEY? They lived at Southbrook, were married in Rangiora in 1869 and divorced in 1879. So far we know about Albert William, born in 1872, and Ernest Charles, born in 1873, both registered in Rangiora, but there should be three others, born in the following years, but not showing in the BDMs. His death cert states the children were males 61, 60, 58 and female 54 when he died in 1934 (Albert had died in 1892). She could have been born in 1880, which is a surprise. Just hoping they might be in some church or council records somewhere......... Our thanks in advance Mary and Dawn in Inglewood, Taranaki

I shall be down at Featherston in a few weeks, they are not forgotten as each Anzac Day they get a lovely Wreath laid at the Obelisk, this is a monument in the cemetery with the name of each soldier that died at the Camp. reading the messages where is his wife buried? if she died at Masterton Hospital in 10 Dec. 1918. how sad lost a son in law and a daughter within weeks off one another. I know Edric Beetham Williams who also died in 1918, his wife and his brother are all buried at Featherston, Edric his wife and his brother went to help nurse him, sadly all died of influenza. -- Adele Pentony-Graham Carterton Cemetery Clareville Researcher Carterton Researcher. and Featherston. 3. BYTHELL Obituary 1894 Marlborough Express, Volume XXX, Issue 249, 24 October 1894, Page 2 OBITUARY. ELIJAH BYTHELL. It is with sincere regret that we chronicle thedeath. of Mr E. Bythell, which occurred at his residence in Maxwell Road last night, at a few minutes after 10 o'clock. Mr Bythell had been intimately connected with local surroundings for a number of years, and, though the end was not altogether unexpected, the departure of one so widely known and respected throughout the district will be regarded as a matter of general and deep concern. The deceased gentleman had been in bad health for come two years, aneurism, the primary cause of suffering,, being followed by a complication of diseases. A trip to the Hot Springs of the North Island was taken a few months ago in the hope of restoration, but, it will be remembered, our worthy fellow citizen returned with unimproved health and with but a poor prospect of final recovery; and latterly an almost continuous confinement to the house was necessitated. Deceased had attained the age of 63 years ; he came from near Manchester, England and he arrived in Blenheim at the beginning of 1864, accompanied by Mr James Tait. These two came to Blenheim with the intention of buying out the bakery business carried on at the time by Mr G. Tait, in premises on the site now occupied by the rear of the Criterion Hotel Prior to this, it may be said, Mr Bythell had worked for some time on the Victorian goldfields. The purchase of the bakery business was effected, and a kind of partnership carried on for a short period. Mr Bythell worked for some years at his trade as a carpenter and joiner, for Mr Caleb Davies, and then set up his own establishment, which he has kept going ever since, enlarging his operations from time to time. In municipal matters the deceased always took a prominent part. He was a member of the Borough Council for some years immediately after the institution of the Borough m 1869, and in the "eighties " he occupied a similar position. For the years 1892 93 he filled the Mayoral office. He was also a member of the Lower Wairau River Board for some years. Mr Bythell also played an important part in the history of the local Fire Brigade, and with that body his name must ever be honourably associated. He was an energetic member of the Brigade for some time, and finally occupied the captaincy a few years ago, prior to Mr McArtney's tenure of office; while he held the position of Fire Inspector at the time of his death. In volunteer matters also Mr Bythell took a creditable interest, being a member of the local corps in the early times, and an ex-Ranger of the Marlborough district. He belonged to the Masonic fraternity, being a member of the Marlborough Lodge of Unanimity. During his thirty years' residence in the place Mr Bythell has, been universally regarded as an honourable man and a useful citizen, and his demise will concern a very large circle of friends. He was kind hearted and benevolent to a great degree; many acts are told of him in which his readiness to relieve the distressed and give a helping hand to his fellow creatures speak volumes for his good qualities; and the fact that this charity was unostentatious is still another tribute to his memory. The deceased gentleman leaves a widow and four young children, and we are sure that to our individual sympathy for them will be joined that of the general community, The funeral takes place to morrow.
