Hi Helene, In Legacy, type the given names as: Harry Oskar "Hasse" ...and then you have options in reporting to name him by the nickname, or remove it from the report, as you please. For Herbert, I would enter his given names as: Geoffrey Herbert "Herbert" ... this makes it clear that he was generally known as Herbert, and that it was also a part of his proper name. As with Harry/Hasse, when you run reports you have options as to how his name will appear. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy ***Please reply to the list*** Helene Godfrey said the following on 14/06/2014 16:24: > Hi all, > I am using Legasy 7, > How would I best show the name the person was known as > My dad was named Harry Oskar NORLIN, but everyone called him Hasse NORLIN. > also one reative was named Geoffrey Herbert GODFREY, he was called Herbert GODFREY. > Thanks Helene

I use the "Norway" list exclusively myself - you can find subscription details at http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/NOR/NORWAY.html and they have a home page at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/NorwayList.htm and also a face book page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/Norwaylist/ . Post your query to the mailing list - there's normally knowledgeable and firendly help available. If you have a nosey around the home page you'll find links to some good resources as well. I am trying to find out WHEN Thomas Andrew DUNCAN of Wanganui/Hunterville became a Justice of the Peace. I know it was circa 1919 to 1925ish, but can not find anything that is more precise. He later became Sir Thomas Duncan. Is there an on-line list or other such list available? Thanks in advance, Beth
Hi Lori, You need to find a mailing list in Norway for Ostfold or Vestfold at Rootsweb or join the Norway one and post all your known information to see if anyone can help you. You have five names. I started with three and now number over 10,000 but perhaps more like 20,000. Very few people had surnames so people were known by their first name, who their father was and where they lived. You need to look at the Mormon site, the Norwegian Census and other sites you can find on the Internet. Surnames came in about 1925. Ole Krog's father was Johan and Elen's father was Soren. As you are in the USA, there might be books available for Vestfold in a library near you and the same for the area Forstraden was in. My ancestors lived on farms so it was easy for me. How things worked in towns and cities might be harder. Thank you Graham As those of you on this list will be aware, genetic genealogy is what I "do" after hours and I was thrilled to have had the honour of spending time with Colleen prior to her travelling to Wellington and further afield. Although Colleen's personality was not revealed on this programme, it was truly delightful; her generosity was unstinting in the way she freely shared of her experiences and the associated outcomes; her unstinting valuable message that correct DNA testing (with the correct firm) for any of us seeking the truth of our paper trail (the truth of our family connections etc.) will, on completion, more than offset the size of such an investment. I simply cannot praise her sufficiently! And huge kudos to the clever NZSG group (or person), who convinced her to come to NZ...!!! (For me, such a meeting more than made up for the annual subscription). Thanks for the link, Graham. :-) Those who have been on this list for some years may recall that Colleen posted here for assistance with the Titanic baby case, back in 2007 - you can read her first post here http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/NEW-ZEALAND/2007-12/1197876061 Kind Regards, Wendy Graham Hoult said the following on 13/06/2014 16:10: > Here's a link to an interview with the recent NZSG Conference keynote > speaker Colleen Fitzpatrick that was broadcast on Dunedin TV on > Wednesday night > > http://www.dunedintv.co.nz/content/nightly-interview-colleen-fitzpatrick > > Nightly interview: Colleen Fitzpatrick > Wed June 11, 2014 - 6:59pm > > It may come as a surprise to learn that forensic science has revealed > a link between a Dunedin resident and a young child killed in the > Titanic sinking. > > And today that was one of many topics discussed at a meeting in the city. > > Forensic genealogist Dr Colleen Fitzpatrick was at that meeting, and > joins us to shed some light on her work. > > The video clip is four and a half minutes long. > > I was one of many fortunate to have heard Colleen at a meeting in > Christchurch last Sunday afternoon. > > Colleen will be speaking at NZSG meetings at Invercargill tomorrow, > and at Rotorua, Hamilton and Auckland next week. Here's a link to an interview with the recent NZSG Conference keynote speaker Colleen Fitzpatrick that was broadcast on Dunedin TV on Wednesday night http://www.dunedintv.co.nz/content/nightly-interview-colleen-fitzpatrick Nightly interview: Colleen Fitzpatrick Wed June 11, 2014 - 6:59pm It may come as a surprise to learn that forensic science has revealed a link between a Dunedin resident and a young child killed in the Titanic sinking. And today that was one of many topics discussed at a meeting in the city. Forensic genealogist Dr Colleen Fitzpatrick was at that meeting, and joins us to shed some light on her work. The video clip is four and a half minutes long. I was one of many fortunate to have heard Colleen at a meeting in Christchurch last Sunday afternoon. Colleen will be speaking at NZSG meetings at Invercargill tomorrow, and at Rotorua, Hamilton and Auckland next week. The Auckland meeting is sold out. Graham
If you go to" Family Search" and select NZ Immigration https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1609792 The link should help get you there. You can view the entries in the passenger list and see other people. Apart from the two children you mention there was a son John aged three as well. -----Original Message----- From: new-zealand-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:new-zealand-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Goldstraw Sent: Friday, 13 June 2014 2:52 p.m. To: new-zealand Subject: [nz] Sailing ship "Oamaru" 1879 10 Dec . I have tried to find other passengers on that ship but a couple of websites I have looked at don't have the names of the other passengers. Beth, this should be in the NZ Gazette. I'm not sure where you are but Massey University (PN) has this in paper format. It's online but only since about the 1990s. In my experience, appointments were usually announced in the newspaper of the day as well. Thanks to all those who answered my query. I have located the wherabouts of 4 of his traction engines, and spoken to the son of the man who bought two, and he is going to send me photos. They are still at Pleasant Point and the Burrell is intact, another one is near Ashburton and one is down south hauling logs. Many thanks. Kayte Saunders
I'd like to contact descendants of Neil & Christina MCDONALD who lived at Lairg, Sutherland, Scotland. Someone in New Zealand has a tree online, as follows, with the above as their ancestors, but does not have Christina's surname and I am sure that whoever it is has been beating his or her head against what seems to be a brick wall trying to find Christina's family. Neil & Christina had a son John MCDONALD, a policeman who married Jane/Jean GILCHRIST. John & Jane had a daughter Christina MCDONALD who married George SUTHERLAND. Christina & George had a son Angus McDonald SUTHERLAND who married Margaret Fraser PATERSON. This couple ended up in New Zealand. Angus & Margaret had a daughter Adaline SUTHERLAND who married John Gordon MOXON. Christina who married Neil MCDONALD was Christina MCDONALD, a younger sister to my ancestor Finlay MCDONALD. She was baptised MCCOIRL, not MCDONALD. I have a truckload of information on Christina's side for descendants but can't help much with Neil although there are a couple of clues as to location. Here's Christina's baptism: OPR - Parish of Lairg, County of Sutherland: "1785 ... May 6 Angus MCCOIRL, Brecklead. Christian. Here's her eldest sibling Margaret's baptism: OPR - Parish of Lairg, County of Sutherland: "1771 ... Nov'r 17 Angus MCDONALD, MCCOIRL, Auldebreck. Margt." Here's Christina's marriage: Scotlandspeople http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ OPR Extract - Parish of Lairg, County of Sutherland - Marriage "1815 ... March 12 Neil MCDONALD Bualindun & Christy MCDONALD Achtomlinie, P. of Rogart." Achtomlinie above was over the border in Rogart parish but not by much. It was the croft of Christina's brother William MCDONALD. Finlay left for Ontario from his brother's croft circa 1830. I haven’t been able to discover the parents of Neil MCDONALD but his son John the policeman who married Jane GILCHRIST was one of at least six siblings. John & Jane had at least 9 issue. Jane was the daughter of George GILCHRIST & Ann MCDONALD who had a family of at least 7 children at Latheron parish, Caithness. Jane’s sister Elizabeth married Morison SNODY and their son, also Morison SNODY, married Annie MCDONALD the daughter of John & Jane. i.e. Morison junior married his aunt (the first of her three marriages) which seems odd unless I have got something wrong. They were similar ages, Annie born 1850 and Morison 1848. Neil might be one of these two: Lairg People in the period 1812 - 1818 People named in the Day Book of William MACDONALD, Merchant of Lairg. MACDONALD Neil, Achnara, Shin, brother to John MACDONALD Neil, Badell, Shin, tailor? Peter in Christchurch.
