Looking for anyone researching the family of... William Isherwood HOPE, son of Edwin Lewis HOPE and Emily TAYLOR Emily TAYLOR, dau. of Thomas TAYLOR and Mary MASON Edwin Lewis HOPE, son of Edwin Lewis HOPE and Sophia Frances Harvey D'EGVILLE Hilton Doidge Waikato
The fighting involved as many as 65 million soldiers from 15 nations, leaving more than 8.5 million soldiers dead. A chain of events began with the June 28, 1914, assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, while visiting the city of Sarajevo in the Austro-Hungarian province of Bosnia-Herzegovina, that touched off a conflict centered in Europe that ended with little ground lost or won and a great loss of life and the Spanish flu. Austria-Hungary officially declared war on Serbia on July 28, 1914. They had the backing of Germany. Serbia had backing of Russia. Germany decided to attack France by going through neutral Belgium. Since Britain had a treaty with Belgium, the attack on Belgium officially brought Britain into the war. German troops moved into France, French and British troops tried to stop them. At the end of the First Battle of the Marne, fought just north of Paris in September 1914, a stalemate was reached. The Germans, who had lost the battle, had made a hasty retreat and then dug in. The French, who couldn't dislodge the Germans, then also dug in. In between was no man's land. Since neither side could force the other to move, each side's trenches became increasingly elaborate. For the next four years, the troops would fight from these trenches. New Zealand, with a population of 1.1 million in 1914, sent 100,000 men and women abroad. About 16,700 died and more than 40,000 were wounded. Almost 9,000 who have no known grave. The Kid from Timaru The boys aboard the transport were busy talking fight. We'd just begun our journey - said goodbye to Farewell light; Some were skiting awful, of things they meant to do. We hoped we might see London, Berlin and Paris too When the Kid he asked us all if we had been to Timaru. Egypt, when we got there, to its endless sand and sun Drilling - always drilling. A case of never done. Sand, more sand, fierce burning sand, our red hot curses drew, The Kid admitted Egypt had more sand than Timaru. Then came the news that we would get our chance to win our spurs, To play the game and show our breed was not the breed of curs. We were ordered out of Egypt to face the German crew - We yelled "New Zealand will be there; the Kid said "And Timaru". The world knows how we played that game on enemy's bleak shores, How ploughing through the gates of hell, the brunt of fire we bore. Blood-stained sands proclaimed the doom of comrades, good and true But bullets somehow seemed to miss the Kid from Timaru. He'd carried in his Captain, almost dying, through the rack Of smoke and fire and battle, but just as he got back A German sniper shot him, the bullet went right through. When he's well, we'll hear again from the Kid from Timaru. Back across to Egypt where they put us into dock We lay with many others, our eyes fixed on the clock Wondering when the time would come, when we were well enough, To do our bit for old New Zealand, the Kid "Some more for Timaru". The other night the Head came in with a message from the King. He thanked his gallant soldiers. We made the sickroom ring With cheers, real rousing hearty cheers, the Kid said "Strike me Blue- I hope to God he has not forgot to cable Timaru." Hi folks, Can someone advise where old copies of the Timaru Herald can be checked out please. Looking for 15 to 25 years ago. Thanks Allan
Hello listers, Does anyone have this man in their family tree please? He was born in Te Aute, Hawkes Bay and lived in the South Norsewood area until his death in Wellington hospital in 1930. He died after a horse he was breaking in kicked him in the head. He saw service in WW1 from 1916-1919 and married Pearl SIMMONS in 1926. They had a son. I am particularly interested in his time in the Norsewood area where he was a labourer and then a farmer post WW1. Many thanks Lynley Chapman
Hi Listers Just did a search on the database and note that he is listed as LEONARD EARL CLARK and his date of death as 1965!! age is correct at 58 and so is his occupation as farmer. so THe NZSG Cemetery fiche have it correct but the database online for Linwood cemetery doesnt!! pain in the neck. lol still would like to know the MI though thanks Patsy

To help Sue, have popped down to Greytown, suddenly thought must be the boutique on corner of Mc Master Street and Main St. Greytown, sure enough that's it, and Sue should have someone photographs now, sadly no sign of a plaque on it, which is a shame, I asked the lady in the boutique about the history of the building, she confirmed what Sue said, was at Huka Village Taupo not sure if it was Roman Catholic but enquirer has a name to ring in Greytown whose late husband organised this chapel for Greytown. I would like to know more about it as well, dates when moved and history of the place, may try google shortly! The building next to it, (another business than what was in the actual Chapel) is part of the Chapel came down with it.. wonder if Britons carried it? Glad to be off help.. Adele Clareville.

Hi Robyn In fairness to Ancestry they were caught between a rock and a hard place They couldn't inform its users directly as all systems were down, the press did cover it widely, I saw it reported in various newspapers, granted those I saw were UK or US papers I am not an advocate for facebook, I think its a very poor substitute for research but on this occasion it was useful as I followed Ancestry and got frequent updates, they also have a twitter feed where similar messages appeared They also have a blog which is worth checking if there are problems at any time <http://blogs.ancestry.com/ancestry/2014/06/17/distributed-denial-of-service-attack-neutralized/> Other forums also discussed it in depth so it was publicised reasonably well They also have a freephone number, I keep it in a saved email in case I can't access the site as in this case But thankfully the lists are back and we can move forward again :-) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 27/06/2014 00:32, Robyn Clarke wrote: > Thank you Nivard for the full explanation that some others may have not been > aware of. > > I am surprised that there has been no public announcement regarding > Ancestry. Hi Adele The church is no longer a wedding venue (if it ever was) - I checked them all out before finding out it is a shop in the Main St of Greytown. I can't see it on street view on Wises so maybe it's changed quite a bit. If someone can pin-point it for me I'd appreciate it and a photo if someone is nearby - there may be a plaque stating where it came from which would be really great. Many thanks Sue On Fri, Jun 27, 2014 at 10:40 AM, Adele Pentony-Graham < pentonygraham@xtra.co.nz> wrote: > Only church I know of where it's a venue for weddings its Hart Udy built in > Greytown now at Cobblestones Museum in Main Street. I have asked local councils to hold a register for any building moved out of town and where its going.. Feel this is project worth doing as so many folk are looking for old buildings, it would be so much easier for folk like us to ask a Council for help, just to make sure from time to time they are doing it!! Was asked if anyone knew where a church is in South Wairarapa built like a whale. no such luck so far, even asked a historian who used to do South Wairarapa he is now in Picton, thought anyone would know about it he would! Perhaps Jonah has it! Adele
Only church I know of where it's a venue for weddings its Hart Udy built in Greytown now at Cobblestones Museum in Main Street. Greytown, I am checking up on the Roman Catholic one, but feel sure it's the one at Cobblestones, it does have ceremonies there when you want to use it as a Wedding Ceremony, there have been a few off late. According to one of my reference books for Wairarapa Greytown Sacred Heart was built in 1880 in Greytown. Memories of South Wairarapa book. So it must be Hart Udy church in the Complex. now many of the old churches around the country are now used by schools, moved to them, like St Matthews College. Pownall St.. day and boarding for Girls. Solway College (Girls) have a chapel.. Rathkeale have a Chapel. If you google Cobblestones you will see the chapel there which Hart Udy built. it was for the Methodist religion when first built, but am sure it is the one enquiry is about.. built about 1860s, but will keep checking it out. Welcome back Rootsweb.. Adele Pentony-Graham Volunteer of Friends of Cobblestones.

Hi all, According to Dick Eastman's blog article last week (17 June - last Tuesday), sites owned by Ancestry.com seem to having frequent outages. See Dick's blog entry: http://blog.eogn.com/2014/06/17/ancestry-com-and-findagrave-com-outages/ He also suggests "recent [status] updates from users may be found at http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ancestry.com.html." I just tried accessing Ancestry.com and they have a home page banner message: "Note: You may be experiencing some intermittent service with the Ancestry.com website. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause and appreciate your patience as we work to resolve the problem as quickly as possible."
