I recall my late parents telling me that they and some of their siblings took part in this event on 7 March 1924. My mother was only six years old at the time and her memory of the event was somewhat hazy however my father, who was a few years older, remembered it clearly and spoke of it to me on a number of occasions. It was definitely nothing to do with the British Empire Games which were first held in 1930. The only Empire Games held in NZ were in Auckland in February 1950 and my parents attended those Games, I have many of their photos. The Commonwealth Games (which succeeded the Empire Games) were held in Christchurch in 1974 and Auckland in 1990. I was lucky enough to attend the Games in 1990. Those interested in the 1924 display at Newtown Park, Wellington, will find a write-up on the PapersPast website in the Evening Post, dated 8 March 1924, page 9, or you could search PapersPast for "Living Union Jack". Adele, because of the distances involved I very much doubt that any schoolchildren from the Carterton-Clareville area were involved in this 1924 Wellington pageant but I guess one never knows. Angela
If anyone was going to the library would they be prepared to do a look up from the card index for me? Any costs are on me. Barbara Far North
Anyone with an interest in the COUCHMAN family of Opunake please, c 1890-1940 or so? Thanks, jo ____________ Jo Broad
I am currently reading a biography of Queen Victoria's son, Prince Albert who became King Edward. The book is "Bertie, A Life of Edward VII" by Jane Ridley. He was born in 1841, and gained a reputation of womanising. That of course was pre-pill, and there were consequences.... The book mentions one woman & her family being sent to New Zealand, with money & possibly land, presumably to avoid scandal. The family name was GREEN, and it would have been before 1861. Mr GREEN returned to England demanding further financial assistance about that time, leaving his wife in NZ. The book seems very well researched, with the author having access to many archives that would not normally be available to family historians. Fascinating! I'm interested to know if anyone has GREEN family with a family legend they are trying to substantiate, or have already sorted out? It's possible of course there was a name change involved. All seeking help for a nephew please, re his great grand-mother Harriett Ann DRIVER (aka WILSON). She arrived in Lyttleton with her daughter Georgina Harriett DRIVER aboard the "British Empire" in Sep1864 & settled out at Kowai Bush near Springfield, Canterbury. They were from Surrey, Harriet born 1829 Croydon & Georgina born possibly Q1 1859 Lambeth. Georgina married George James Brown, had many children, & died in Christchurch 1940. I am wondering if there is any local history booklet or info assembled that someone would look up please? I am interested in these questions: 1. What occupation did Harriet have to keep her & her daughter? 2. She was buried in same plot at Kowai Pass as Alexander Johnston d. 14/02/1887 aged 69. Who was he? 3. Is it known which land/property she lived on, and who owned it? Anyone with an interest in this family? Cheers, jo ____________ Jo Broad

Hi folks, back again after a lengthy absence. I am now looking for Shirley Kendall who was a frequenter of this list. She is a distant cousin of mine... We were in contact a few years ago, but I have now lost all her details and would like to meet up with her again. Could anyone help me out here, or let her know I am searching please? A special hello to Adele as well. TIA Les Fox (a member of the Almond, Potter, Mathieson and Fox clan)
Hi folks, Re adoption in the early period of NZ settlement. My grandfather was born in 1879 and the story handed down was that his birth mother was a member of an entertainment troupe travelling to Aust and NZ (ie the forerunner to J.C.Williamson or its ilk) The birth father had refused to marry his girlfriend, no doubt prompted by his father who didn't want his son marrying a 'showgirl' The birth mother kept the child but found it difficult maintaining her job with the theatre company once the child reached the toddler age. Reluctantly she handed him over to a young couple disembarking from the ship at Bluff and they settled in Invercargill. The couple then had a baby of their own and found caring for two small children at the same time too confronting so they arranged for the Migration Officer, H.V.Lillicrapp (not sure of spelling) He then arranged for another couple to care forl the child and I understand that regular payments arrived from England to assist the family with the costs of raising the child. The couple who took on the child then discovered they were expecting a baby of their own and after the birth of their child they found it too difficult having two babies. The problem was resolved when Mr Lillicrap arranged for the child to be placed with Mr & Mrs William Stroud - migrants from Scotland who had one teenage daughter of their own. James subsequently went off to the UK after leaving school but we're not aware if he was able to locate his birth parent(s). He joined the British India Army in the early 1900s and then at the end of his term with the Army he and his English bride moved to NZ to start their new life. I am unsure if he was 'officially' adopted by the Stroud family but on his marriage certificate (from Bombay, India) it states his father as being Stroud from Invercargill, NZ Cheers Ainslie (in Adelaide. Sth Aust) ps Interested in the McDonald connection - the McDonalds were very close friends of the Stroud family and this has continued down through subsequent generations.
