After receiving an interesting email from one of our regular subscribers it got me thinking, where are the headstones made who are on our soldiers graves here in NZ. The CWGC regimental styled ones.. are they made here in NZ or where this video I have been watching, what an interesting one to watch too.. Over the years with Featherston Military Cemetery, I have requested replacement headstones for several soldiers, done through Ministry of Culture and Heritage, one from memory was for Private Thomas Wm. Spence King as he had on his one, Thomas Wm. H. King, where did H come into the equation! He was the descended from John King, one of the First Missionary to NZ in 1814. Another one was 2nd. Lt. George Prentice, he had TWO at the Cemetery, I couldnt figure it out, but CWGC said its the rank which is wrong, well why didnt they take the original one away when they got the replacement! Few others have been replaced.. but where made please!! http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-07022/gravestone-factory-commemorating-war-dead/7650896. I am currently listing all the graves on a facebook page for Featherston. thanks Rob it was so interesting!! Hi Listers How can I identify whether a marriage of a Margaret Rattray is "mine" when it occurred before 1880 and her parents are not named on the marriage certificate? Margaret Rattray was born about 1845 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, daughter of John Rattray and Elizabeth (née Black). She emigrated, with her parents, to Sandhurst (Bendigo), Victoria. Most of the family came to Gabriel's Gully, Otago about 1866. If she married here there is only one marriage that fits. Margaret Rattray married John Fraser in 1877. Does anyone know the participants of this marriage? Where it took place? Who this Margaret's parents were? We have not found her marriage, or death, in Australia. Any help would be appreciated to tie up this family. Helen Christchurch Sent from my iPad
Is anyone in Timaru able to do a lookup of the Timaru Herald, May 2014. Specifics can be supplied off-line regards Bruce
Hi list Christchurch lookups offered this morning I am presently in the city on a Community Car medical run and have gravitated to the Christchurch city library. As I may be here an hour or three (or four) I should have some spare time available to do birth or death notice lookups in The Press and Christchurch Star. Please advise the date of the event for newspaper lookups. I’ll check email from time to time. You could also try me on 027-2066-383 Even if I don’t get time to do the lookup today there’ll be other times. Graham Hoult Kirwee, Canterbury.

Thank you very much to all who replied to my query. The original photograph was pasted onto cardboard, and folded into quarters. The top half of the photograph was torn off and my grandmother's and her brother's heads are missing. So it had a very rough life. There are several suggestions for me to follow up on. I have had some excellent assistance through the Balclutha Museum. Chris, Archway has a Coroner's Inquest in 1970 for Grant John Angus DARE. This file is held in Wellington. https://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=24298481 Archway says "Coroner's files are restricted for 50 years from year of registration on the grounds of personal privacy. (For example a file registered in 1940 becomes open in 1991)" For access to Coroner's records which are less than 50 years old, you need to seek the prior approval of Coronial Services of NZ - details of how to do this are included in the above Archway entry. Even if Coronial Services declines your request for early access to the full file, they may still be prepared to give you the date of the accident which will make it much easier for someone to track down a newspaper report for you. Might be worth a try. Otherwise, I suggest you try working backwards through the newspapers from the date of death and see what's in the week or so immediately preceding that date. And in those days most newspapers around the country used to carry reports of most if not all serious accidents/ fatalities in other parts of the country. Out-of-area newspapers may not carry the same level of detail of the accident as the 'local' paper might print - but this is another way of sussing out the date of the accident and then tracking down the more detailed reports in the relevant local paper. Good luck Angela This email has been scanned by BullGuard antivirus protection. For more info visit www.bullguard.com
Hi Chris , Maybe the Waikato Times , if accessible to some lister , would have made mention of the 1969 accident . However a date of accident may be necessary I note that Grant John Dare was listed as a council inspector on the 1969 electoral roll. He would have been employed by the Taumarunui Borough Council , which later became part of the Ruapehu District Council A picture of his his grave's headstone is available online with a Google search Best Wishes , Ray On Sat, Jul 16, 2016 at 1:05 PM, Chris Mahoney via <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi > > Am looking for any newspaper articles for Taumarunui around 1969 that > mention a Grant DARE. > > It is know that Grant, who was living in the town at the time had some > accident (do not know what) in 1969, and eventually died as a result of > injuries, date of death listed by Ruapehu Council burial records being 6 > January 1970. > > > Thanks > > _____________________________________ > Visit my website at www.chrismahoney.co.nz > > > > > The List Guidelines > > http://new-zealand-l.blogspot.com/ > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
