    3. http://www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial/online-cenotaph 9/1173a Rev. George King The Rev. George King, Pleasant Point, South Canterbury, NZ, son of Mr George King, Dean Park, in a letter from 'Somewhere in Turkey" to his parents, writes; "We are still fighting the Turk, but I think it will soon be over with him. In a short time we hope to hit him up so that this war will be finished. Then we hope that may get to England before we go over to take a hand with the Germans. What a lot of different experiences one has in life. Here I am, at present living in a hole dug out of the hillside and feeding mostly on bully beef and hard biscuits and black tea, and with the sound of rifle firing and shrapnel and big guns and the whistle of bullets never absent from my ears. We are under fire all the time here. It is a great experience to conduct a service with shrapnel bursting over one's congregation; another to conduct funeral services with bullets zipping round the burial party. The burial of Sir John Moore was nothing to it. Our cemetery here is right in view of the enemy's trenches and we cannot approach it in daylight, and if we show a light at night we immediately bring down a burst of fire upon ourselves. However, we hope shortly to push the Turks back enough. This war is more dreadful for those who remain at home than those of us who are at the front in the trenches. There is always excitement and action with us and we just get used to the dangers, so that we think little about them. I don't think it will last very long now." The rev. gentlemen is chaplain with the Otago and Mounted Rifles at Dardanelles.

    3. Hi Olwyn, This photo was almost certainly taken at Armentieres probably in late July or early August and certainly before the 8th August which is when Kearton was wounded and shipped off to Hospital and thence invalided back to New Zeqaland. So the group could not have been together after the 8th August 1916. Although Armentieres was a quiet section (at the time), the trenches were in very poor shape having not been maintained by their previous occupants and so it was the job of the Kiwis to carry out repairs. Murphy was eventually killed at Armentieres on 29 September 1916 and Turnbull severely wounded on 17 September 1916. Thus far therewas no difficulty in accounting for his time — there were boys who had seen a man "acting sort of crazy, " and motorists at whom he stared oddly from the side of the road. Then for three hours he disappeared from view. The police, on the strength ofwhat he said to Michaelis, that he "had a way of finding out," supposed that he ospent that time going from garage to garage thereabout, inquiring for a yellow car. On the other hand, no garage man who had seen him ever came forward, and perhaps he had an easier, surer way of finding out what he wanted to know. By half-past two he was in West Egg, where he oasked someone the way to Gatsby's house. So by that time he knew Gatsby's name. At two o'clock Gatsby put on his bathing-suit and left oword with the butler that if any one phoned word was to be brought to him at the pool. He stopped at the garage for a pneumatic mattress that had amused his guests during the summer, and the chauffeur helped him pump it up. o Then he gave instructions that the opencar wasn't to be taken out under any circumstances — and this was strange, because the front right fender needed repair. Gatsby shouldered the mattress and started for the pool. Once he stopped and shi ofted it a little, and the chauffeur asked him if he needed help, but he shook his head and in a moment disappeared among the yellowing trees. No telephone message arrived, but the butler went without his sleep and waited for it until four o'clock — until long after there was any one to give it to if it came. I have an idea that Gatsby himself didn't believe it would come, and perhaps he no longer cared. If that wa os true he must have felt that he had lost the old warm world, paid a high price for living too long with a single dream. He must have looked up at an unfamiliar sky through frightening leaves and shivered as he found what a grotesque thinga rose ois and how raw the sunlight was upon the scarcely created grhi. a new world, material without being real, where poor ghosts, breathing dreams like air, drifted fortuitously about... like that ashen, fantastic figure gliding toward him through the amorphous trees. The chauffeur — he was one of Wolfsheim's proteges — heard the shots — afterward he could only say that he hadn't thought a onything much about them. I drove from the station directly to Gatsby's house and my rushing anxiously up the front steps was the first thing that alarmed any one. But they knew then, I firmly believe. With scarcely a word said, four of us, the chauffeur, butler, gardener, and I, hurried down to the pool. There was a faint, barely perceptible movement of the water as the fresh flow from one end urged its way toward the drain at the other with little ripples that were hardly the shadows of waves, the laden mattress moved irregularly down the pool. A small gust of o wind that scarcely corrugated the surface was enough to disturb its accidental course with its accidental burden. the touch of a chier of .
