Had a lovely afternoon at Bideford yesterday, loved the wee churchyard, quite a few burials there, and there are about three burials they dont know who they are off... The inside of the historic church is worth viewing, we had the red carpet treatment, had a lady explaining everything to us.. its history and everything.. its kept locked for safety, but can be opened for visitors, then we went to the lovely DURSLEY gardens, owner was the person who was at the church too meet us. Lovely gardens and home.. Now in the church there is a memorial sign for EMIL, I have found out the surname, its GRAPENGATER, from Germany, wonder if anyone on our great list knows more please about him, and/or the church and burials? camera was used as normal! The church was built 1875. I will return to take time out to see the graves, as we had about 20 in our group, not enough time to really look around outside! The church has lovely red carpet on the floor, from Parliament, I can remember Gladstone Church out of Carterton has the same pattern, but not red, but blue and folk said to me was used for the Coronation, no it wasnt, checked that out.. sounds good but not the correct information! I checked with Parliament on that.. no not from Coronation... Hon. Falloon arranged for the old carpet from Parliament to be used at Bideford Church, his headstone is in the Churchyard as he lived over the road at Bowlands.. History of NZ is fascinating.. Bideford is named after the first Vicar who came from near Bideford in North Devon. England. adele -- Adele Pentony-Graham Carterton Cemetery Clareville Researcher Carterton Researcher. and Featherston. WW1. Cemetery.
Now have a Facebook page for Featherston WW1 cemetery, and will list all the original names for the headstones which family, friends donated for their soldier, the list is the official one, advertised in Wairapara Times Age in 1970, in short asking for family to collect the dilapidated tablets.... not words I would use, these lovely marble monuments were put on the soldiers graves by famliy less than 100 years ago, 1920s... up to 1970 when the Regimental one was placed on each grave, I am in touch with a few descendants about this, local one is for Private E. R. ISSELL, no sign of his black granite headstone in the piles I found back in 2003. But why only have this notification in one newspaper here in NZ when the soldiers were in fact from all over New Zealand, and beyond? The lists were published from 7th October 1970 to 28th October 1970. Acknowledgement from a contact at Trentham has given me the lists... The tablets to be removed are (were) Pte. Alexander. G. Pte. Barter. J. H. Gnr. Black. J.A.J. Pte Bridle A. W. Rqms Bright. W. F. * 2.3.1917. Pte Byrnes R. * 29.3.1916 Pte. Caverhill. C. J Sgt Carnachan. A. W. Pte Colville. W.W.D. Pte. Cunliffe. E. H. 2/Lt. Now those with Asterisk died 1916. possibly illness. But I know of two other names not on this list who had headstones, one is I am sure is FOORD. and EARBY. Earby one is now near the replacement headstone, as have shown it to actual family members. The headstones for Influenza illness are now in the Wall at the Cemetery, but I would have like them all to be included, they trained for our Country and died at the Featherston training camp. I hope to visit the cemetery with in the next few days, Thomas W. Spence King's birthday today, 10th Sept... he was the Gt. Grandson of John King, one of the First Missonary to NZ in 1814,his actual headstone is now at St John's Churchyard at Waimate North, i was there for the Blessing off it some years back with the King family.. Anyone related to any of the soldiers please get in touch thank you. Apparently the girls were buried at nearby Wairere Station, not Bideford Churchyard, unmarked graves, they died in a fire. John Rutherfurd had the Station in those days.. thanks to a family member who I emailed last night have given me the correct information! Now this is RUTHERFURD with two U, no O, but still related to the O one, as one U married a O off Rutherfurd!! We had in Carterton Charles Rutherfurd, still never found when and where he died, as his wife is buried at Clareville, Harriett. Thanks. John, b1867 was one of 5 children under 10 orphaned in 1875. Four children stayed in W'ton and brought up by other people, some under other names. John was sent to Bombay, Franklin, as an 8 yr old, to whom? Family story I have.. "It was to a family called Lucas". [Mathias Lucas of Puni?] He is in Bombay school records as John Hawkins in 1879. John left Bombay c1888 "in search of his sister," found her in Featherston c1889. She was Elizabeth b1868. In 1903 John married Harriet Turnpenny, then moved to Martin, 1911. A son Edgar [12] was sent to Waiuku to live in 1913 and family followed in 1917. John returned to Bombay, Lot 220, in 1919 to farm as did my grparents, Ernest and Elizabeth (nee Hawkins) Cox till c1928. Anyone with a "family story" of an orphan, John Hawkins living with them in Bombay as a child? Any help appreciated, Noeleen.
Lovely old church, am due to visit it this coming Saturday, looking forward to it... history.. Gossett ws the first clergman to live in Bideford, he came from Bideford in Devon, hence the name, the Devon one is lovely, been there on the coast.. must look up Rev Gossett on Rev Michael Blain's lists.. Many thanks. Adele -- Adele Pentony-Graham Carterton Cemetery Clareville Researcher Carterton Researcher. and Featherston. WW1. Cemetery.

Hi Beth, I've been a member of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG) for many years. For anyone who doesn't already know, their web site is at https://www.genealogy.org.nz/ To view members-only features at the web site, log in as a member. But there's also a lot to see if you're not a current member, so have a good look around. The Certificates Collection is excellent, and good use of this alone can be worth the cost of your annual membership. See more information about it at Resources > Collections > NZSG Certificates. You will find an index to the Certificates Collection's holdings on the Kiwi Collection, which you can purchase through the web site - note this is a resource for members only. Shop > Members Only Products. I don't know what you've been told about Ancestry, but NZSG does not give you access to that any more than any other person with or without a personal subscription. But you do get access to the Gale Newspapers, and Discovery (The National Archives' online documents). Again, these are under Resources in the menu on the web site, along with the Certificates Collection. NZSG also has its own mailing list, which I administer. You can ask about the society and its resources, and your own research queries there. If you'd like to join it, send an email to [email protected] asking to be added, and include your name and membership number. Hope this helps. :-) wendy aotueka wrote on 29/08/2016 10:24 PM: > Evening all.I am getting so frustrated! Hoping that someone can assist.I have just joined the NZSG. I was told that I could view a list of held certificates and access Ancestry and other things as well. BUT I cannot find anything on their website.I can log in but it is a most unfriendly site!Anyone know why I am struggling with this site? Is there another site for members that I don't know about? Please help.Beth >

Born John Lewis Hansen but his Mother Jørgine Hansen died 10 days after his birth and he was taken in by family friends Maren and Ollie Torkildsen of Norsewood and raised as their son. Hi Olwyn You were looking on the Cenotaph database for: "9/1173a Rev. George King The Rev. George King, Pleasant Point, South Canterbury, NZ, son of Mr George King, Dean Park, in a letter from 'Somewhere in Turkey" to his parents, writes; "We are still fighting the Turk, but I think it will soon be over with him....." Rev King's WW1 service file on Archway lists indicates his service number was changed. Originally his number was 9/1731 but this was later crossed out and changed to 9/1173a on his file. The date of this change on the WW1 file appears to be 9.6.1920 (but I don't have time to do any further cross-checking with other sources). Anyway, you'll find Rev George KING of Pleasant Point on the Cenotaph database as 9/1731. And you'll also find a second man, George RICHARDSON of Southland, is on the Cenotaph database with exactly the same number, 9/1731. Incidentally, rather than his father, the WW1 file lists Rev George KING's nok as his wife, 'Mrs H KING, The Manse, Pleasant Point, Canterbury' (sic). The very brief WW1 file (unfortunately a mere four pages in this case) does not contain any details of a wife and family. However... The 1914 Electoral Roll for Temuka, lists both George KING, minister and Helen KING, married at the Manse, Pleasant Point. NZ BDM lists six births to a George & Helen KING between 1903-1912. I haven't followed up the 'fortunes' of this family but I did check one of the children as two of the six births were both called George. Sure enough, the eldest child called George Alexander Stuart KING, died in 1905, aged 2 years 3 months. This little boy is buried in the Norsewood Cemetery (southern Hawkes Bay) and you will find the burial details, including a newspaper extract of the funeral notice on the Tararua District Council website. The 1905 newspaper extract refers to the little boy's mother as Ellen (a fairly common variant of Helen - especially in that time period). However the 1905-06 Electoral Roll for Waipawa shows George KING, clergyman, and Helen KING, married, both living in Norsewood. So it seems highly likely to be the same family who were in South Canterbury during WW1. Looks there could be a very interesting back story to the Rev George KING when you get a chance to pull all the strands together. I look forward to reading this story in due course.
