    3. Yes but the most striking thing about it is the width rather than the length, though both are substantial. Ruawai (two waters) at the lower reaches is really back to front - usually it is object first then description, so it should be Wairua. Local signpost has both. 3. I too, am very sorry about Anne. My father's mother was a decendant of the families who settled in Waipu after arriving in Auckland on the Breadalbane, and descendants still live there today. Anne helped me massively when I first heard about the Waipu Museum, and over the years as I got more and more hooked. I'm sad that I never got around to telling her about my 3 times great grandfather, and his sad story, while he came to Australia as a soldier and the 65th Regiment, his Dad was languishing as a prisoner in Van Diemens land, after being found gulity of stealing two tankards from his estranged wife's pub. But for all Anne's help, I would never have found him. Canterbury or Otago or maybe Auckland? By train across the country to Vancouver or an Francisco. The US transcontinental railway was completed about 1865. There was the San Francisco Service, U.S. P.s. mail steamer, with a call in to Honolulu and another call in at Fiji. By 1870s regular transpacific crossings commenced. The Panama, New Zealand & Australia Royal Mail Co. was formed June 15 1866 to operate monthly sailings in each direction between Sydney, Wellington and Panama with four ships. The Panama, New Zealand & Australia Royal Mail Co. was formed June 15 1866. The Pacific Mail Steamship Company 1870s. In 1885 the Oceanic Steamship Company obtained the subsidised mail contract. 3. Thanks Graham I’ve found all those things online since the initial enquiry but the one thing missing is absolute proof that Sober and co are the right people despite the way things are hanging together. I live in Chch and so I know the OPR index cards at Chch libraries well, and as you say they may well have the answer re the marriage. I’ll probably try to make it tomorrow afternoon if I haven’t found proof otherwise by then. This morning I was held up by not being able to get onto Ancestry.com (got back on mid afternoon) which was when I asked if someone positively knew of the connection. I’ve had quite a few replies since my initial enquiry with quite a few being off the list, and it is gratifying that so many listers are really keen to help, but of course they always are. Arthur is my brother-in-law’s maternal grandfather, which is why I’ve been keen to get a result. The name Sober is curious to our eyes but there is a SOBER surname, and of course there is SOBERS, and so it could actually be a clue to further ancestry. Cheers Peter From: Graham Hoult Sent: Wednesday, February 1, 2017 5:56 PM To: [email protected] Cc: Peter Dillon Subject: Re: [nz] Sober COLLINS Hi Peter A search on the BDM Historical Records website indicates that Arthur COLLINS married Mary Louisa WEBB on 14 December 1904. I have searched on Papers Past but haven’t managed to find a reference to their marriage :-( *If* they married in a local church there *may* be an index card with a full transcript including names of parents in the Parish Register Index at the Manchester Street branch of the Christchurch Public Library. Someone visiting the library will hopefully have a look for you. Naturally, there won’t be an Parish Register index card if they were married at a Registry office. Later : I now see that a tree on Ancestry says that they married at Glentunnel The 1905-1906 Lyttelton electoral roll includes these COLLINS listings 965 COLLINS Arthur - Heathcote Valley - carpenter 970 COLLINS Mary Jane - Heathcote Valley - domestic duties 971 COLLINS Mary Louisa - Heathcote Valley - wife 972 COLLINS Sober Armstrong - Heathcote Valley - carpenter There are other COLLINS listed in the main roll, but none recorded as living in the Heathcote Valley. It looks like he was probably the son of Sober Armstrong COLLINS who lived at Heathcote Valley in Christchurch It does look likely they are father and son given that they have the same occupation. As a general rule, the information in documents nearer the birth is likely to be more accurate than something late in life (e.g. a death registration) when people may not know. In fact Sober was born and baptised at Penrith and is sure to be Sober Armstrong COLLINS married to Mary Ann DOUGLASS registered at Sunderland registration district in 1867. Probably all three sons were registered Sunderland when they were born. John William was the eldest son according to Sober?s 1910 probate. Here are their birth registration index entries as found the new (November 2016) GRO BDM site that include the mother’s maiden surname https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp Mother’s Maiden Surname COLLINS, JOHN WILLIAM DOUGLASS GRO Reference: 1868 S Quarter in SUNDERLAND Volume 10A Page 512 COLLINS, ALFRED DOUGLASS GRO Reference: 1870 J Quarter in SUNDERLAND Volume 10A Page 575 COLLINS, ARTHUR DOUGLASS GRO Reference: 1873 S Quarter in SUNDERLAND Volume 10A Page 664 For what it’s worth, I also found this birth registration index entry COLLINS, ROSE ELLEN DOUGLAS GRO Reference: 1867 D Quarter in SUNDERLAND Volume 10A Page 457 One has to register to view the above indexes, but there is no charge unless you order a certificate. Hopefully someone visiting the CHCH library will look for a transcript for Arthur COLLIN’s marriage in the Parish Register index - or possibly a marriage report in the Press of The Star., If there isn’t a record suggest that you get a cheaper marriage printout rather than a legal certificate - and either of those rather than a death registration document. Hope this helps Graham Hoult Kirwee, Canterbury On Wed, 1 Feb 2017 Peter Dillon <[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>> messaged > Subject: [nz] Sober COLLINS > > I’m trying to discover for sure the parents of Arthur COLLINS who married Mary Louisa WEBB in 1904. > > It looks like he was probably the son of Sober Armstrong COLLINS who lived at Heathcote Valley in Christchurch having arrived in Canterbury in 1879 on the ship Crusader with his wife Mary Jane and sons John William, Alfred and Arthur. 3. Jenelle pointed out that while Ancestry was down I should try FreeCEN. It came up trumps for 1871. Then I got my ancestry connection back and found further entries. If I'd had my Ancestry connection before, I would never have pestered the list with my emails. It turns out that Sober's parents John & Ann took their family from Penrith to Sunderland, appearing at South Hylton, Durham in 1851 and Sunderland (Bishopwearmouth) in 1861 and by 1871 Sober was at Sunderland with his own family with only Arthur yet to be born. 02 Apr 1871 Census of England & Wales @ 4 Brougham Street, St Peters Bishopwearmouth, Co. Online trees about Sober says he was born at Penrith Cumberland, which appears to be correct. The odd tree that has Arthur (no parents given) has him born at Penrith too. However his widow Mary Louisa in an affidavit in his 1944 probate said that her husband told her he was born at Sunderland. In fact Sober was born and baptised at Penrith and is sure to be Sober Armstrong COLLINS married to Mary Ann DOUGLASS registered at Sunderland registration district in 1867. Probably all three sons were registered Sunderland when they were born. John William was the eldest son according to Sober’s 1910 probate.
