Afternoon. Does anyone know if there was an epidemic or flu or something sweeping Auckland in mid-late September 1854 that would kill several children from the same family, with a week or so of each other? Thanks, Beth
I tripped over this death notice in the Glasgow Herald 14 Oct. 1872. Reproduced here in case of use or interest to anyone DEATHS. (By Telegram). At sea, on his passage to New Zealand, HENRY HAMILTON DUNBAR. M B., aged 21, third son of Dr Henry Dunbar, Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire, and grandson of the late Professor Dunbar, University, Edinburgh. -- Friends will please accept of this intimation. Rowan Gibbs
25th February 1943 was the date in history of the POW Japanese Riot at Featherston Camp. sadly many died, and also one of NZ Soldiers died, Private Walter Pelvin, he is buried in his home town, Geraldine, but there is also a memorial at the Layby, Messines Way. Featherston for him, near the Japanese Memorial Garden. I have read that there is to be a Wreath Laying Service on the Anniversary, and if by chance, Winsome reads this, I intend being there, especially to visit the Memorial for Private Walter Pelvin. When ever I am down that way I always stop at the layby to see his Memorial, so he is not forgotten.. Its 74 years this February since the incident. Does anyone have access to the 'Waikato Times' newspaper - 16/18 May - looking for death notice - Owen Ratcliffe died Hamilton 15 May 2016 Thanks Ken
There was very little in the press at the time on the riot. Only a couple of lines. They media sure kept it quiet. I laid a poppy for him. Two and counting! Maybe this memorial will be covered with poppies this month. http://www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial/online-cenotaph/search/?n=496685 Press 5 March 1943 Page 6 SOLDIER DIES FROM WOUNDS INJURY IN PRISONER-OF-WAR CAMP. Thanks Olwyn, Fascinating and informative. I immediately looked up my gt gt uncle who survived both world wars and found 37 pages of information about him. Service, training, postings, a doctor's letter and some medical things I doubt he'd want others to know like his scabies and other ailments which landed him in hospital but he fought in France and Belgium, survived the trenches and the flu, received a couple of medals and lived until 1975 a happy (I hope) sheep farmer. One of the lucky ones. I am tracking a family in Australia and there was an article on Trove regarding a custody matter in Auckland Supreme Court. Several questions- would these matters be reported in full in Auckland newspapers, or would there be some sensitivity towards the parties, one of whom lived in Auckland. The court case occurred in 1949. If there were open reporting and someone has access to 1949 newspapers, I will provide more details. And secondly which law applies when relatives retain custody of children say in 1930's and 40's when child protection/child welfare is not involved? Is anyone able to assist with these queries please? Chris Austrlaia
Hello Mary and List members, Thank you for sharing the photo. Mary's photo is online - it is Alex's service record image 9, but Mary's copy is far better. image 10 is a photo of his headstone, a post war grave, with a war memorial in the background. Maybe someone will recognize the background. http://archives.govt.nz/world-war-one Glancing at his service record He enlisted 18 Dec. 1916 at age 36 and 11 months and had been in NZ seven years. His will was held at 96 Rochester Rd, Melbourne. So he probably came over from Scotland to Melbourne to NZ. He was a carpenter. Had a brother in Victoria and another back in Scotland. He lived at 28 George St, Rooky Nook, Auckland. Thomas Murray, a tailor was also living there and Robert Stuart, pastry cook, 47 Kensington Ave, Mt Eden, Auckland, witnessed his second will, 10 Aug. 1921. Their parents were deceased. What is interesting is that his rank was a snapper, an engineer, and was in the 25th Reinforcements. He went over on the same ship as the 5th Tunneling Company. He picked up Pulmonary TB while in the service in France. You only get that when in close contact with someone for an extended time. It is airborne. Was he a tunneller? Discharged 25th April 1919 no longer fit for war service. He died in 1921 from a illness acquired in the service.
Does anyone have the citation for Eric Ellis recived a MM in 1943? Thanks.

I had trouble with it but managed to upload a photo and information eventually. Mine was WW1 so already on the database. It's not very intuitive.
