http://www.cyndislist.com/south-africa/bmd/ gives some resources. Central resources are in Pretoria I believe but South Africa is divided into provinces so it helps if you know which one your family went to. Otherwise I'd suggest joining a rootsweb emailing list - people on these are usually very helpful. http://bigfile.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/listsearch Jeanette -----Original Message----- From: Angie Barnett Sent: Thursday, March 09, 2017 11:50 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [nz] South African research Good morning all How do I go about reaching a family arriving in South Africa in abt 1850? Hi All, I am specifically wanting to know how to obtain school records for Frank Hawker b1869. He had siblings Kate, Edith, Janet, Minnie, Harry, Sidney, Mabel and Ethel. I am also interested in communicating with any relatives of George Thomas Hawker and Mary Ann Johnson or indeed George Hawker and Catherine Redruo and Catherine Lyons. Thans Michelle in Tassie
Always easier if the locale is pinpointed. George Thomas HAWKER (1839 -1924) a Crimea War veteran and came out on the Tudor in 1865. He was a baker and set up in CHCH. In Caledonian Rd. He moved to New Brighton in 1869. He was one of those who agitated for a school there and a P.O. A pillar in the stone wall at the Pier has his name. Sidney Hawker, a retired baker of CHCH Harry Nelson Hawker, a retired baker of CHCH. Died 5th July 1947. Son Herbert Nelson Baker of No. 19 Crescent Rd, Kingston Hill, Surrey, England. Hi John, Chris & Terry Yes he remarried after Margaret Maud died & married Ernestene. I have a copy of his probate from Family Search. Terry also sent me a link for an add on Papers Past of him being a solicitor, which my search didn't show. Laurence may have been a law clerk & became a lawyer with the help of a Mr Jacka who was rather younger than him as he was Laurence's sponsor. My friend was wondering what he did before he died - he certainly didn't do very well as he only had about 638pound when he died - he did become very ill with anemia and finally died of it which we presume is why he gave up being a solicitor. Unfortunately there is no longer any family to ask. I asked the Law Society but they only had the date which he was inducted which I already had.
