While I think it is a good idea to screen for TRULY offensive names, I would think that the bearer of the name should be allowed an explanation before they are duly dismissed. Though I am not Native American and see nothing inherently offensive in the word itself, I know that the word "squaw" has been used in a derogatory manner in the past, and that therefore Native Americans are understandably sensitive to its usage. Even if the last name was in fact Squaw, and not Quaw, I myself would use the name proudly. I apologize on behalf of anyone who was that prejudicial. My personal apologies to any Native American who finds my attitude offensive somehow. It is not intended. Please don't leave the list on that account. Nancy Hargiss California, USA
Below is the message that I sent Janet Quaw. I had no way of knowing that was her last name. I never said anything rude or suggested she leave the list. She overreacted to my message. She should have just explained the situation and ended it there. I just want people to know what this word means. I never would have thought anything had it said Janet Quaw but MANY people don't use their real name and many people like myself search for indian ancestors in New Mex. Hope this clears it up! Brigitte ----------- Hello, My name is brigitte. I saw your name on the new mexico list. I am 1/2 indian and thought I should inform you about the word squaw. It is the blackfeet word for vagina. That is what the french fur traders called indian women back in the day. It is now considered a similar thing to the "n" word. I just helped put a petition together to change the name of squaw mountain because of this. Have a good day! Brigitte
