I have been unhappy with so little activity on any of the New Mexico mailing lists. Like you, I am a newbie as far as New Mexico genealogies. Ramirez is an early name in New Mexico. You just have 200 years of genealogy to fell in (grin). I certainly would start with the soundex index for the 1880 census. If you are lucky the church records have been filmed for the relevant location and are available through a local Family History Center. The records of the Catholic church in Silver City 1874-1956 are available. On marriages, these usually give the names of all four parents. The index of the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses are included in AIS microfiche set available at most LDS Family History Centers. In the Spanish communities, a women seem to have usually used the surname of her father - not her husband. In a number of cases I have picked up her surname in the census. This also has lead to a problem in that the census taker has at times listed the children with her surname.
