    3. Has anyone ever heard of the name: Teofila Sanchez y Chavez The name of Teofila is rare as I cannot find any info on it..Is there a another name that would be a nick-name for this ? Can someone explain what the" y" means?..and why there are two surnames?..which do I follow as being a maiden name?.. This is the name that was found in a marriage to my Grandfather..Desiderio ABEYTA.. I was told he married Francisquita Sanchez. This is the only marriage that was found at the FHC on this microfilm..(which i ordered the Microfilm of marriages from Albuq.Bernilillo Co.NM..years=1900-1910) According to the microfilm.. ---------------------------- Desiderio ABEYTA age 27 Albuq. Teofila Sanchez y Chavez 19 Albuq. 26 November 1904 P.Tommasini Pastor S.H.CH. --------------------------- The dates are correct for my grandfather but her name is not..also...His first born Clemente ABEYTA was born 13 August 1905. Which is about right too..9 months after the marriage...So I believe she could be my grandmother.. Can someone help me on this mystery?.. 3. Hi, Rose- You have probably gotten many answers to your inquiry but I thought I would answer you in case you hadn't. The "y" means simply "and" in Spanish and the compound names come from the tradition of children taking the name of their Father and Mother. Many times as generations passed, the compound name became "fixed"......like my Durán y Cháves surname........at one time there was a man named Durán who married a woman named Cháves and their children took on the combination. This is not a steadfast rule, of course....that would be too easy. I still find names listed by Cháves or Durán y Cháves. Many, many occasions occur where the female children took the name of their mother.......I had a woman named María Lopes who married my Teodoro Durán and I had a second wife name Ana María Manuela Lucero..........they turned out to be the same woman. She occasionally used her mother's surname, Lopes as her own.....and sometimes she is found using her Father's surname, Lucero. Crazy, but go with it and you will find your ancestors. Teofilo and Teofila are fairly common first names. Where is your Teofila Sánches y Cháves located and about what time period?? I have access to the AASF microfilms at the Special Collections Library in Albuquerque.
