Hello: Could someone on the list advise me regarding a question on vital statistics for NM. I have an individual who is supposed to have died in January 1903 in NM, place unknown, but possibly Lincoln County. I know in some states prior to statehood, deaths were recorded in the county where the person died (if the death was recorded at all). In passing through Lincoln County recently, the county clerk advised me that if they had any death records they would have been forwarded to the Bureau of Vital Statistics for NM some years ago. Has anyone on the list had any success in obtaining a death certificate for individuals who died in early 1900s? How long should I expect to wait for a response once a request is submitted? Any information appreciated. Liz Freeman

Because I had NOT given the relationship, they were returning my check. (This had been for the 4 great-grandfather of my grand-son.) I subsequently obtained the index to the death certificates at my local Family History Center. Index A-S ca 1899-1930 Film 1991645 Index T-Z 1889-1930 Index A-Z 1931-1940 Film 1991646 I found two individuals of interest to me and obtained the appropriate film with the death certificates. Unfortunately, looking at the index, there seem to be very few people listed who died prior to 1920. A number of people of interest to me, who died in the given time span, are not listed in the index. I have had the index returned to Salt Lake City.
