Hi Everyone, I've just started researching my husbands family and really don't know where to start. I also do not know what New Mexico has available to the public. Any help or direction you can give me would be appreciated. Here is what little I do know. Proquinto Ramirez B: 1871 in Mexico D: in New Mexico -m- Anastisia Avlarez B: 1873 in Mexico D: in New Mexico children: Ramon b: 1894 Jose b: 1896 Delphina b: 1898 Lionardo b: 1900 Alfonso b: 10/14/1909 in Silver City, NM d: 1/14/1973 Santa Ana, CA I'm guessing Proquinto possibly died in Silver City, NM but have no idea. I'm starting from scratch so any help would be most accepted. Thanks, Kathy in Southern California S.A.D.O., R.U.D.N.Y., F.O.R.N.E.K., B.A.L.A. & R.A.M.I.R.E.Z. I just recently discovered that a great uncle had been living in New Mexico between 1900 and 1910. He died in New Mexico probably around 1908 give or take a year. I'm told by his newly found descendants that he died of "Black Lung" disease and is buried somewhere in New Mexico. I knew there was mining in New Mexico back then but I wasn't aware that coal was mined also. I would like to know what counties may have had coal mines working around the turn of the century. I am trying to locate his burial place and also where three of his children were born. My uncles' name was Thomas Harley Reynolds and usually signed as T. H. Reynolds. Any help in locating counties that had coal mining back then would be appreciated. Thanks, Larry Reynolds lbrey@worldnet.att.net

Cipriano LUJAN was born Feb 1867 in Rincon del Tecolote, San Miguel County, New Mexico. By 1900 he was living in Sabinoso with his wife Micasla MARTENEZ and family. Cipriano's parents were Ramon LUJAN (b 1842) and Hilaria (b 1845), and grandparents Juan LUJAN (b 1818) and Maria Teodora (b 1818); all of whom lived in Rincon del Tecolote 1860-1880. Does anyone have further information on these LUJANs, their wives, or the location of Rincon del Tecolote? Thanks, Jim Scofield scofield@ccnet.com
Historically, the model for research facilities use in genealogy and family history [in the United States] centered first on the East Coast, with the subsequent gradual takeover in the field of Family History, beginning circa A. D. 1900, by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, (headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah). Presently, on the East Coast, the Library of Congress Online Catalog has a database of "approximately 12 million records representing books, serials, computer files, manuscripts, cartographic materials, music, sound recordings, and visual materials in the Library's collections." http://catalog.loc.gov/ This is further enhanced by major research depositories from New England - to the South, as well as some other locations in the Central section of the United States. This can be compared with the LDS FHC of Salt Lake City, Utah, having 2,000,000 + microfilms and approximately 280,000 bound volumes. REF: The World of Learning 1999, Forty-Ninth Edition, by Europa Publications Limited. http://www.familysearch.org/Browse/browse.asp On the West Coast, in the State of California, there is the Melvyl® Catalog Database. Its contents, as of December 6, 1999 are listed as: "approximately 10,013,139 Titles representing 15,226,500 holdings for materials in the University of California Library and the California State Library". http://www.melvyl.ucop.edu/ This represents a major PARADIGM SHIFT in the field of Genealogy and Family History Research, as this database alone represents more resources than those contained in the Online Library of Congress Catalog. Limited in-house access to Other Databases includes RLIN Bibliographic File (@RLG) http://www.rlg.org/rlin.html of approximately 88 million records, as well as WorldCat (@OCLC) and its 32 + million records. http://www.oclc.org/oclc/man/6928fsdb/worldcat.htm SOURCES and REFERENCES, at: http://www.dcn.davis.ca.us/~vctinney/archives.htm#Sources combines these major holdings with other online databases of genealogical interest - worldwide. It has been estimated that in the State of California, alone, that by the 1990s, there were over 70 millions of books within the various library systems, statewide. The future of the California Library system is: "One library, 8,000 doors", as mentioned in an editorial in The Sacramento Bee, dated Sunday, May 4, 1997, page 4 of the Forum Section). The California Digital Library (CDL) presently "is responsible for the design, creation, and implementation of systems that support the shared collections of the University of California". There is an interesting reference "to the world, as it was seen by people 1,000 years ago", as presented to THE WHITE HOUSE, released by Office of the Press Secretary, dated January 25, 1999, The East Room, 7:37 P.M. EST; Title: FIFTH MILLENNIUM EVENING AT THE WHITE HOUSE Remarks by the President, the First Lady, Professor Natalie Davis and Professor Martin Marty http://www.usia.gov/usa/2000/5milev.htm "Their life expectancy was short. Most of them could not expect to pass the age of 40, if that." . . . "So to get to my question, what is it, then, that -- or why should this culture, why should we focus on the past? Why is it important, or is it, indeed, important, for us to go back to the past and recognize the accomplishments of people who have done these things in the past?" . . . "PROFESSOR DAVIS: Professor Cruz, thank you for your question and your description of the many features of our 20th century life that develop -- some going back to the year 1000 and some to the year 1500. I think there are several reasons to study -- to be interested in the past, in addition to what it's contributed to us. One is partly the fascination of in human life, of different ways the people have lived, including ways that might not contribute to us." . . . SEE ALSO: 60:20512 Benedictow, Ole J. The medieval demographic system of the Nordic countries. ISBN 82-91114-01-3. 1993. 229 pp. Middelalderforlaget: Oslo, Norway. In Eng. This is a general study of the demographics of the Nordic countries in medieval times. Data are primarily from 15 osteo-archeological studies of medieval cemeteries carried out in recent decades. "The author concludes that the demographic system of the Nordic countries must have been qualitatively different from the early modern demographic regime. It is, among other things, distinguished by considerably higher mortality, lower life expectancy, higher nuptiality, lower age at marriage, especially for females, and higher fertility. This shows that the transformation from medieval society to (early) modern Europe comprised profound changes not only in economic, social and political structures, but also in the basic demographic pattern." I am dealing a set of Spanish speaking residents of San Miguel / Guadalupe counties. Those from Anton Chico in 1860's are by the surname of MONTANO, HIJAR / IJAR, MUNIS, VALENCIA, PACHECO, and ARAGON. Is any one on this list working on that region or know of an active list treating the region. Jim Scofield, Livermore CA

The Taliaferro Brothers had a general store in Lincoln County (White Oaks) during the range wars. This is included in my Dad's book "The Taliaferro Family - Three Centuries In America." He wrote this book after 43 years of research and he passed away in 1995. I published the book this past year.
