My late mother-in-law, Louise Turner was born in Silver City, NM. She was the daughter of John Wesley Turner, Jr., son of John Wesley Turner, Sr. who was the son of George L. Turner. The Turner's came from Texas around the turn of the century and were apparently prominent. There certainly were enough of them! Louise's mother's maiden name was Robertson. An seeking history on both sides of the family, including siblings and their families. Grandma also had a cousin J. Sherwood Culbersen that my husband knew and was very fond of, but I'm sure that by now he is deceased, but can't for the life of me find him anywhere. I still don't know how Sherwood fits into all of this. Well, there you have it.
I am from NM. I moved with my family in 1970 to Alamogordo, then in 1972 we moved to Albuquerque. My grandparents moved to Albuq in the '50's. I married a NM native with roots in NM as far back as 1724 (so far). I'm searching his family for my children. The surnames are LAYCOCK (Civil War, Ft. Bascom), FAJARDO, PADILLA, ROMERO, MIRANDA and more. The area of Dona Ana, Socorro and McKinley counties. Chery Smith

Hello all- Well I am early in my searches. So I will give you all information I have. I am originally from NM, and was born in Grants and lived there until 1984. My father's family was from Grants. The families name is Campbell, my grandfather was Robert A. Campbell SR. I know that he owned a gas station along old Route 66, and they own the house on the hill above the High school on Warren. The house is suppose to be some sort of historical marker. This is all I know about him and his family, I know he's from Arkansas but don't know any dates of when he moved there or where they moved from. My mother's side of the family is also from NM. My grandparents on her side lived in Bosque Farms. My aunts lived in Edgewood until 1983 or so....and then moved to Tucumcari where they still reside with my grandfather and his brothers. This side of the families name is Watson. My grandfather is Hubert Doyle Watson, and my aunts name is Beiger, so Patricia Hall you might know her, because she lived in Edgewood for years, and my cousins went to school in Moriarity and graduated from High School in the early 1980's. These are my ties to NM.....I am very young and learning alot about the state I remember only from childhood.....and people here in TX do not know what a real soapapilla is...or even a stuffed one..... I miss going to Stuffy's for lunch in Albuquerque. LOL Wendy Campbell Lucas. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Hello, List, I think it is agreat idea for you to tell about your connections to New Mexico, and very useful to us other researchers. I'm not from New Mexico, but my great-aunt , Adelaide CHAMBERS, and elusive (because I have not found anything about him) husband , Clarence B. CHAMBERS, and her Mother, Anna, (Mrs. Issac) ELLIS, lived in Gallup in the 1900's. Anna died there in 1923, and was then taken back to Kokomo, IN to be buried beside her husband. From old issues of the Gallup Independent, I am guessing there may have been two children, LEWIS CHAMBERS, and COYLE Chambers. And from a Kokomo obiturary when Adelaide's brother died, she was living in Albuquerque in 1942. There begins my brick wall. Can anyone help? Many thanks, CS Harris camsig1@mindspring.com

Back in the early 1960's my husband worked for Kerr-McGee mines close to Grants, NM. We lived in Milan, outside of Grants for about 3 years. We are originally from Texas and other than those 3 years have always and still do reside in TX. I wish I had been researching my SIMS family then. Why is it that all "brick wall" families seem to have something to do with the state of NM? My great-grandmother, great uncle and his sister my great aunt were all in NM back in the 1920's and 1930's. I found where my great-grandmother and great uncle were buried, with a lot of help from some very nice folks in NM. But my on going dilemma is my great aunt Ellen Elizabeth Sims born 4 Jun 1881 in TX and died in 1929 in NM. Her husband, Lawrence Callie Nickell (no children), a twin born 1 Jan 1881 in TX and she lived about 5 miles outside of Clovis in Curry Co. NM. I can't find her death certificate in NM or TX and can't find where she is buried in either state. Most of our Libraries with genealogy depts. here in TX don't have much if anything from NM in them. I am always so grateful to anyone in NM when they help me with my research.
I am a french teacher who is searching informations about my ancestor's family who immigrate in NM as coal miners with his brother (or brothers ?) and their families. You say you would be delighted if you can do any lookups in New Mexico for anyone. I take you at the word, if you agree to it. My great grand-father's name is Edouard Pruvost (Prevost or Provost was the others spelling in US at that time). He emigrated in NM in 1895 (I know his destination was Blossburg, 10 km east of Raton, as written in the passenger list of the ship arrived in NY) and came back to France in 1900. His brothers Zéphir Henry Louis Joseph emigrated earlier in 1886 and stayed in NM, they lived in Madrid Town (1900 census) and Dawson (1910 census). Zéphir was married to Emma and they got 4 children : Zénobia born august 1884 in France Zénob born nov 1885 in France Uma born apr 1888 in France Sydney born mar 1890 in NM Zéphir and his son Sydney died in oct 1913. They both two have been missing and believed dead in the 1st Dawson mine explosion. I only own pictures (that I inherit from my grandmother who lived there) that have been taken in photographic art studio of Trinidad CO, Raton and Santa Fe. It's very difficult now to find descendant of my great grandfather's brother in NM and also of my Pruvost's line in France in my native area. I know about the réunion in the beginning of september, a friend tell me about it and I am planing a travel in NM at that time during summer vacation . Do you think you can help me in finding tracks of this family ? thank you for your help. I have a number of lines that I have traced back to my ancestors arriving in New Mexico about 1598. Several came with Onate and I am very proud of my heritage. My Mother's family arrived "late" into New Mexico in 1908 into Roy, Harding County, New Mexico. I live in Sandia Park, New Mexico, in the Sandia Mountains east of Albuquerque. I spend way too much time at our special collections library here and usually "lunch" at the FHC just blocks from my jobs. If I can do any lookups in New Mexico for anyone, I would be delighted. This is my first post to the list. I have vacationed many times in NM and have a sister who lives out there (Gallup). Have just discovered one of my families that made their way to NM in the 1870s and/or 1880s. If there are any CASNER or CARSNER descendants/researchers on this list, I would like to hear from you. I have considerable information on this line that I am willing to share. The family begins in VA in 1801, makes it way via KY and TN to MO circa 1818; the name was CASNER; one of the sons makes his way to IA where he dies in 1847. This particular son had 13 sons (so the tradition goes) and one daughter. A very wild bunch. Most make their way to OR circa 1850-1860; circa 1870s there is a split in the family (reason still unknown to me);those that remain in OR and WA change the name to CARSNER; those that move to AZ, TX, NM, NV, UT, ID keep the spelling CASNER. Those in CA are spelled both ways. Would like to hear from any CASNER/CARSNER researchers/descendants who may be subscribed to this list. Liz Freeman In OK! PS: Yes, some of them even got to OK in the 1920s for a very brief period of time.
Hello list, Here are my connections to the wonderful "Land of Enchantment": My g-grandparents and also g-g-grandparents lived in several area of New Mexico in the 1800's and early 1900's. They lived in Catskill, Las Vegas, Mayhill and other small towns. Their last names were GRAY and ALDRICH. As for me, I have lived in Las Cruces (ex-hubby was born and raised there), and also Roswell (no, I'm not an alien). LOL. I work as a Fire/Aircraft Dispatcher fot the USFS and BLM, and worked for the BLM in Roswell. I really miss the friendly people, the Christmas Eve Electrical Parade, going down the Pecos River during christmas time to see all the wonderful lights, and most of all I miss the smell of green chilies being roasted in the large "roasters" that spin around and around. Ummmmmm. And of course, REAL sopa's with butter and honey!! ...Marcy Ugstad rainy Oregon
Hi, I thought I would post my connection to New Mexico, and then you all can follow suit. We lived in Edgewood, New Mexico in the early 1970's. My youngest daughter was born in Albuquerque, N.M. We lived in Belle Vista Estates. I loved the area, my kids went to Moriarity to school, 7 miles away. We have also lived in Tucumcari, New Mexico, back in 1962. I liked that area also back then. Lots of history. Also a wonderful mexican restaurant on Hiway 66. Moriarity also had a great restaurant. I miss not being able to buy Hatch Green Chilies, here. I also miss that getting green chilies in cartons like cottage cheese comes in, frozen. We would take a stick of margarine, melt it, put in a chopped onion and a container of green chilies, and cook until the onion was clear, also a little garlic. Made a great sauce for burritos.
