    3. Dear List Buddies- Just to clarify the information available in Fray Angelico Chavez's book, "Origins of New Mexico Families".......the families written about are those in New Mexico in the 17th and 18th centuries. They are 99% of Spanish or Portuguese origin. In the latest addition, there is a small addenda of individuals present in New Mexico in the period 1820 to 1850, but this does not list many in comparison to the rest of the book. I am happy to look up any surnames or individuals in the "Origins of New Mexico Families". Happy Hunting! Patryka Tachick gtachick@msn.com

    3. RoseE <RAbeyta@webtv.net> had written Monday, May 08, 2000 10:21 AM "In the San Miguel del Socorro Church records, there is the following baptism record: Jesus Maria Leandro ABEITA b.14 Feb.1850 and baptized 17 March 1850--son of Desiderio ABEITA and Clementa BACA.Paternal grandparents Juan ABEITA and Josefa ARAGON... " [that should read God parents ] I checked the Angélico Chávez collection of prenuptial investigations of marriages. This gave: 1848, Mar. 25 (no. 46) Socorro, DESIDERIO ABEYTIA ([age] 26), farmer n. [native] of La Parida, son of Juan ABEYTIA and Maria Antonia ARAGON, and Maria Clemente BACA (18) n. of the same place, d. of Jose BACA and Maria Andrea TORRES. -- Witnesses: as in preceding preceding is a second marriage of Juan ABEYTIA: 1848, May 14 (no 41), Socorro, JUAN ABEYTIA (60), farmer, n. of Belen, widowed in 1st marriage of Maria Antonia ARAGON, and Ana Maria PADILLA (18), n. of La Parida, d. of Jose Padilla and Rafaela Chaves.-- Witnesses: Ramon Padilla (46), single, Juan Rafael Ribera(28), married, both farmers. I checked for the ABEYTIA-ARAGON and BACA-TORRES marriages but they were not included. Again from RoseE <RAbeyta@webtv.net> "Also, his marriage Jesus Maria AVEITA m.Maria SANCHEZ: 15 Nov 1874 --Jesus Maria AVEITA,soltero, vecino de Socorro, hijo de Desiderio AVEITA,defunto,y de Clementa VACA,con Maria SANCHEZ,soltera, vecina de Socorro, hija de Jose de Jesus SANCHEZ,difunto,y de Benita LOPEZ" The collection gives the marriage: 1850, Oct 27 (no 40), Socorro, JOSE DE JESUS SACHEZ (24), farmer, n. of S. Lorenzo, son of Julian SANCHEZ and Maria Luisa LUCERO, and Maria Benita LOPEZ (18), n. of the same place, d. of Francisco LOPEZ and Guadalupe MONTYOYA. -- Witness as above. Witnesses above are: Ramon PADILLA (46), single, Pablo Gallegez (48), married, both farmers. It was getting late and I did not take the time to follow up on the marriage of this couple's parents. Will be at the FHC by next Monday pm. The recording of the prenuptial investigation was separate from the recording of the actual marriages so the record of a marriage may have survived in only one of the two places. So far in my investigation in Albuquerque, the only relevant ones to me have been listed both places. Jim Scofield, Staff member Livermore CA Stake FHC

    2. To: "Jim Scofield" <scofield@ccnet.com> Thank you, Jim, for your reference to the 11 fiche Pre-nuptial Investigations (1678-1869) of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. I should have known of their existence, because I am a Director of a Family History Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, but I seem to spend far more time helping patrons and training staff than researching. I also am descended from BACA, but farther back. Francisco Xavier Chavez was kidnapped by Comanches about 1768 from his home in around Bernallio when he was 8 years old. He was adopted by an Indian woman and raised with the tribe. After her death he was sold as a slave to the Tavoyas Indian. At age 22 he escaped to San Antonio. His parents were Ignacio Chavez y Duran and Gregoria Maese. Francisco's grandparents were Francisco Duran y Chavez and Juana Baca the Younger. Wish I could help with your current problem. Thank you again for your reference. Michaele Burris

Rose ABEYTA Benita ABEYTA(mother) Desiderio ABEYTA m.Francisca SANCHEZ(g) Jesus Maria ABEYTA m.Maria SANCHEZ(gg) Desiderio ABEYTA m.Clementa BACA(ggg) Juan Antonio ABEYTA m Josefa ARAGON " Hi, Do you have dates and places for your people? The Origins of New Mexico Families comes down only to 1725 in the ABEYTA line. I do have collection of matrimonial investigations also done by Angélico Chávez. This is essentially a collection of marriage records coming down to 1869 but far from complete. At present I also have the index to Albuquerque Church records as well as the 1726-1855 marriage records. On all my lines, I have a good 120 year gap after the Chávez book. Two marriages in Albuquerque in the lines that I am researching are: 1 March 1834 Juan Cristobal Muñiz (25) son of Jose Maria Muñiz and Barbara Zamora both deceased with Ana Maria Pacheco(16) dau of Geronomo Pacheco and Pascuala Sanchez. Ana Maria seems to have gone both by the surname Pacheco and Sanchez. 2 April 1839 Bernado Valencia (21) son of deceased Domingo Valencia and Da. Paula Martinez with Da. Ana Maria Aragon (16) dau of Don Juan Tomas Aragon and Da. Gertradis Garcia. These individuals were eventually in Anton Chico in (then) San Miguel Co. How do you make progress further back? 1. [NEW-MEXICO] BACA, LUJAN of Roy, Sabinosa and San Jose NM
    2. Jim Scofield
    3. Hi, The way things are going, I will be researching all the New Mexican surnames of Spanish origin. Cipriano LUJAN (b 1867) with wife Miguelita MARTINEZ moved to Sabinosa, San Miguel Co, NM by 1900. By 1920, some family members lived and attended church in Roy. I have the LUJAN line back to a Juan LUJAN (b1818) residing in Rincon del Tecolote, San Miguel Co, NM (location unknown to me) By 1910 Vivian BACA was to Cañon Largo, near Sabinosa. I have BACA line I have back to a Toribio BACA (b 1786) with wife Maria Marta ULIBARRI. They resided in San Jose, San Miguel Co, NM in 1860. Other female surnames connected to the BACA line are MONTOYA and ARAGON. One research aid that I have available here at the LDS Family History Center is the 11 microfiche set of records of Pre-nuptial Investigations (1678-1869) of the various churches of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe extracted by Angelico Chavez. Unfortunately many of the original records have been lost, particularly for Santa Fe. The entries are by Surname and then by wedding date. The parents of the couple are listed. If you have a nearby LDS Family History Center it can be ordered for use there. Given a complete name, approximate date, and if I am not overwhelmed by requests, I am willing to do look ups. Jim Scofield, Livermore CA (other lines to be posted later)
