    1. [NEW-MEXICO] Wandering Family
    2. Elizabeth E. Freeman
    3. Hello List: I'm one of those 'lurkers' who occassionally come out of the woodwork to post. I have a wandering family by the name of CASNER who went in and out of NM during the time frame of 1860-1920. The only county that I definitely know they were in was Lincoln County. My CASNER family consists of several brothers who migrated from MO >IA >OR >AZ >in/out of NM. It appears they all mined in CA and may have 'struck it rich'. (1) John (b1829 MO) and John Lewis Casner (b.1851 IA) are often mentioned as brothers, but are actually father and son-both are often in trouble with the law. (2) Riley Casner (b.1843 IA) settled in 1875 in AZ, but wandered extensively from his home base. (3) Moses CAsner (b.1837 IA) also settled in 1875 in AZ, but wandered extensively from his home base. (4) William/Bill Casner (b.1825 IA) and Daniel/Dan Casner (b.1837 IA) rode with all the brothers; they were sheep herders and were killed in 1876 in west TX while wintering a large herd of sheep there; newspaper accounts say they were killed for their gold they had mined in CA (actually they spent it on the sheep). (5) Henry Casner (b.1840 MO) rode with the brothers; is last heard of in 1860 in OR but may have gone to NM with some of the brothers. (6) Frank Casner (b.c. 1823 IA d.1898 in CA) is believed to be one of the wandering brothers. (7) Ebenezer Casner (b.c.1827 IA/MO) is last heard of in the 1850s in IA when he is in trouble with the law. Am posting this information here just in case anyone may have come across them in their research or may be 'connected' to any of the family. The parents of the above were Henry Casner and Jincy Jane Fields Casner. Willing to exchange information with persons connected to this line. Liz Freeman In OK!

    3. Hi Joan ~ Thanks again for verifying another long lost great uncle. Slowly putting the puzzle together. Good luck with your search, and I appreciate your help! If there are any names in the Mora area you are looking for, I can check it out with family and see what they know. My Ma and all her siblings were born and raised in Mora, beginning from 1906--1924. 1. Re: [NEW-MEXICO] Microfiche set?
    2. Joan Mendelson
    3. Hi, my micro-fiche were purchased from the LDS/FHC in Salt Lake City, UT. They have the names of the person, when they were born & who the parents were (sometimes just the year), when they were Christened & who the God-parents were, when they were married and to who and the places the incident took place. Usually it's the town/city, county/parish. Then there's other info that I assume indicate when, where and who submitted the info. I've never really delved into that particular end of it. Is that what you were asking about? If not, tell me and I'll see if I can send the right stuff next time. Joan aka pattimm@mindpring.com

    3. Hi Joan ~ Thanks so much for the info. Can you tell me if the baptismal records for Jesus Thomas Romero identify his parents as Jose Jesus (or Jesus) Romero and Maria Rita (or Rita) Salazar? We think this child must have died very young as none of the family elders remember hearing about him. Also, if you are researching a particular name, we may find some connection. From what I've heard, everybody in Mora knew each other or were related in some way back then! Gracias..... 1. Re: [NEW-MEXICO] Abeyta Family from Mora, N.M.
    2. Joan Mendelson
    3. Hi Rose, I took only from the MORA, NM area, as there are well over 100 Abeyta's listed. If you could be alittle more specific as to first names or dates, it may help more. There are about 50 or so spelling it ABEITA and then a bunch spelling it ABEITIA-ABEITTIA. So here is what I found-------- 1.] ANTONIO ABEYTA married MARIA CATALINA MUNIZ--FEB of 1871 in MORA, NM, SANTA GERTRUDIS. 2.] MARIA TOMASA ABEYTA christened 26 OCT 1871, same places 3.] JOSE VIDAL ABEYTA christened 06 MAY 1881, same places Maria and Jose are both offsprings of Antonio and Maria. Now here are a couple of more......... 1.] MARIA MARTINA ABEYTA married JOSE ESQUIPULA TRUJILLO--APR of 1877, Maria was apparently christened on 27 MAY 1863, MORA, SANTA GERTRUDIS. (both ceremonies took place at the same place) 2.] DANIEL ABEYTA christened on 15 APR 1883, MORA, ST. GERTRUDIS 3.] JOSE CECILIO ABEYTA married MARIA CRUZ GONZALEZ on 10 DEC 1860 at MORA, WAGON WHEEL, SANTA CLARA Hope this helps. Joan aka pattimm@mindspring.com

They had several sons born in El Alto and Mora, N.M. One of them, Donaciano Romero, was my Grandpa. He was born in 1870. Not much else known about his parents, and I'm at a standstill with my research. Anybody know any info? Greatly appreciate your help.

    2. A young preacher was contacted by the local funeral director to hold a grave side committal service at a small local cemetery for someone with no family or friends. The preacher started early but quickly got himself lost, making several wrong turns. He arrived a half-hour late, the hearse was no where in site and the workmen were eating lunch. The pastor went to the open grave and found the vault lid already in place. Taking out his book, he read the service. As he was returning to his car, he overheard one of the workmen say: "Maybe we'd better tell him it's a septic tank."
