Hi, I'm looking for any info on the following people: ISABEL GARCIA--B:08 Jan 1886 in Ysleta, NM and D:20 Apr 1960 in Hurley, NM. She married NICHOLAS LEMON KENNEDY (son of Nicholas J. Kennedy), B:16 Jun 1880 in Los Cruces, NM and D:23 Sep 1961 also in Hurley, NM. They had at least one child, HESTER KENNEDY DeCOSTE, B:12 Sep 1916 in Santa Rita, NM and D:01 Jan 1992 in Hurley, NM where she was Postmistress or Asst. Postmistress. She married ERNEST JOSEPH DeCOSTE on 10 Jan 1938 in Silver City, NM and they had one child, JERRY RAY DeCOSTE. I'm interested in Isabel and Nicholas, mostly, as they were my aunts parents and would like to establish alittle more info on them for my genealogy findings. Thanks to anyone who can help..................Joan

Hi Rose, I have in town only the first set of indexes. This says it covers letters A-S 1899-1930. I will look and see what I can find. What is the husband's surname for Francisquita SANCHEZ? The index seems to use the English convention for a woman's name. It will be a couple of days before I can get over to the library. Jean, There was a newspaper called the State Line for the area along the obrder of Texas & New Mexico. I think it was in Farwell, Texas across the border from Texaco New Mexico. We visited it once going thru on a trip back in the 1980s and got copies of their archives obiturary for my husband's grandmother Florence Jessie (BURNS) BARGER. They had large old bound books of old newspapers. My husband's BARGER, BURNS, KLOEPPER and WEGMAN ancestors homesteaded abt 1909 near Farwell, Texas & Clovis, New Mexico area. The library in Clovis, NM might have some obituaries on film. They had a nice new library when we went thru there in late1990s with a genealogy section. hve you read the 1920 census for the area she lived in? Most of the LDS Family History Centers in New Mexico have all the NM Census. My husband's ancestry line is in the BARGER line link of our homepage. http://members.truepath.com/beverly/index.html Beverly (HIMES) BARGER ----- Original Message ----- From: <Cottestail@aol.com> To: <NEW-MEXICO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 01, 2000 1:38 PM Subject: [NEW-MEXICO] Death Index 1929 > Hi Jim, > I gather from the others that have asked you to look up some info from the > New Mexico Death Index that you do that. I am trying to find information on the catholic church in Costilla NM, around the late 1800's. I was told it burnt down and that some of the records were destroyed. How would I find out if this is true and where I could write to about checking into the other records? I am looking for Aguilar, Trugillo, Trujillo and Archuleta...please help...Daniel
I had a couple of other ideas over the weekend. There is a Navajo Nation bookstore in Window Rock, also-they have all sorts of stuff on traders, history, etc. Depending on whom the translations were done for, this might be an opportunity to find out more about your relative, and surely a lot more about the Navajos. I would recommend visiting the Hubbell Trading Post (I believe it is in or around Ganado,AZ, about 60 mi W of Gallup) and is one of the oldest and largest, I think it is a NATIONAL Historic Site. They also have books as well as the best rug room on the planet. If you are in the market for rugs, Crownpoint, NM (20mi E, then 20 mi N of Gallup on I 40) has an auction every 4-6 weeks with excellent prices. You can pick up a NM Magazine, it always has the schedule. If you need assistance, write or call me at 505-281-3988. I lived in Gallup for 2 years, am a native New Mexican, and have worked with all the tribes for 15 years. I'll try to point you in the right direction, to the best of my knowledge. Are you coming to Albuquerque? If so, I have some other "must see" ideas along the way. As you probably already know, the capitol of the Navajo Nation is in Window Rock,AZ, approximately 20 miles from Gallup. I would check with the census or department of vital records. They have all the offices you would expect of a country or state government, being an independent nation. They may have some knowledge of him, but can surely interpret his name. Hello List: I am researching an individual by the name of Frank Porter CASNER (b.4-29-1884 TX dd10-12-1963 Los Lunas, Valencia Co., NM). Family tradition says he had six children; that Frank was arodeo rider; and that he was an interpreter for the Navajo Nation that had nammed him Sit-na-guy-sozi. Question: With this limited information, can someone tell me how to go about researching whether he was an interpreter for the Navajo Nation and to find out what "Sit-na-guy-sozi" might mean? I plan to be in NM later this year (Gallup, Alburquerque, Santa Fe and points inbetween) and hope to be able to explore this further. Thanks for any information.
Thanks for replying, Jim. If you have the time, could you please do look ups in Quay Co. for Noe Labadie, Salome or Salomon Labadie, Manuel Labadie, and Vidalita Labadie or Vidalita Cordova? They would have more than likely in the 1900's before 1927, but exact year is unknown. Thanks in advance for your help. Hi, I have in town from the LDS Family History Department the death index for New Mexico for 1899-1928. The information in the index is the person's name, date of death, county of death, and age. If wanted, I should be able to do look ups at periods in the next couple of weeks. In the one example I have looked at for a married woman, she was listed under her husband's surname with her father's surname included as the middle initial. She had gone by her father's surname, but she is not listed there. Filmed copies of the death records are available for rent at local Family History Centers for 1899-1926 in one series and 1927-1945 in a second series (check catalog). These are sequenced by year and county. Jim Scofield, Livermore CA searching in San Miguel county Montano, Baca, Lujan, Hijar and many more.
