Could someone on this list advise me where the San Juan River is located? In which counties does it lie? Thank you so much for any assistance. It seems my wandering CASNER family went that route also.
I would like to thank everyone who responded to my post about my two Casner people, one of whom is said to have "died on the Canadian River while hunting quail". I debated even putting the reference to the Canadian River in the post, but went ahead. I did not realize that there is a Canadian River in NM and also one in the TX panhandle (I'm not from either of those states). It seems that my Casner Family could have easily traveled that route to migrate to NM since they had traveled the area in the late 1870s. Guess I'm going to have to invest in a good atlas. Again, thanks for all the responses; at least I have a better idea where to look to try to locate the resting place of these two individuals.

Hello: I have a family by the name of CASNER. There is the father, John Casner, and the son, John Lewis Casner. They are found in Donley County, TX on the 1870 census, in Hall County, TX on the 1880 census, in Baylor County, TX in 1881, then in Haskell County, TX from 1881 through June 13, 1902. In 1899 they are both tried for their part in the killing of the grown stepson of the elder John Casner. The second wife of the elder John Casner (Jane Pitner Casner) dies 5-30-1898 in Haskell County, TX. Pitner or Pittner was the name of her first husband. It is her son who is killed by John and John Lewis Casner in a gunfight. Both John and John Lewis appeal their conviction and win the appeal. The last official record found of John and John Lewis is 6-12-1902 in Haskell County, TX when they are at the courthouse and signed papers selling the last of their range land. The family of John Lewis Casner are next found in Lincoln Co., NM. His wive is on the 1910 NM Lincoln Co., Census. 1906 one of the daughters marries, place unknown; first child born early 1907, Lincoln Co.,NM 12-27-1907 one of the daughters marries at Arrollo, Lincoln Co., NM 2-25-1908 one of the sons marries in Meek, Lincoln Co., NM 10-12-1909 the wife of John Lewis Casner remarries in Carrizozo, Lincoln Co., NM. 1-11-1910 another of the sons marries in Clovis, Curry Co., NM 1-25-1915 another daughter marries at Arabella, NM 5-4-1917 another son marries in Carrizozo, Lincoln Co., NM John Lewis Casner is said to have died in 1-1903 on the 'Canadian River' while hunting quail to feed his very large family. Nothing is ever said when/where the elder John Casner may have died. My thinking is that both the elder John Canser and John Lewis Casner died while migrating from TX to NM. The only Canadian River of which I am aware is in Oklahoma but I have found no record of them in OK. Would appreciate suggestions on where I might find information on: -where the elder John Casner and John Lewis Casner may have died -where the family may have been in 1906 when the first daughter married I have personally searched the records in Curry, Lincoln, Chaves, Roosevelt Counties NM without success for marriages records. While I did find several marriage records, I did not find one for the daughter who married in 1906 (by the way she died in 1911 supposedly near Arabella with the birth of her only daughter) Her married name was Shipp or Knibbe. I did check with the county offices on death records but without success. Did NM keep death records for tht period of time? Where would these most likely be found? Is there anyone on this list who might have access to the Genealogical/Historical Society records in Carrizozo who could do a check for me? Suggestions, please.
Just wanted to say to the list what a wonderful library this is. I came across their on-line catalog; found an article in thier vertical files that had the same surname as the family I'm researching. I mailed a query to them on Friday (US Mail) with a money order and the following Friday I had a response. Not only was the information on my family; it gave the date/place where two of the brothers were murdered; the place in NM where another brother was prospecting; and the names of the outlaws that were riding with the brothers. In case you haven't used the library - try it, you'll like it.
I have consolidated my initial 3 newsletters on "Microfiche/Microfilm and Viewers" into one newsletter. If part of your genealogy research involves microfiche and/or microfilm you might find this interesting. It's too long to post on a mailing list so email me at lhutch2@pnx1.com and I will email you a copy. (that's a lower case L in front of the hutch2). There is no charge involved. Loring Hutchinson

Hello: Is there anyone on this list who is in Santa Fe that might be willing to do a lookup for me? In reading the website for the Fray Angelico Chavez History Library, The Palace of the Governors, Santa Fe, NM, I see where they have one article on "the Casner Brothers" in the vertical files at the library. I would like to obtain a copy of the article and will glady reimburse for expenses to obtain a copy of the article. I have a whole family of brothers (13 to be exact); several of whom settled in the NM, TX, AZ area beginning circa 1875; descendants remain there to date. One of brothers (John Casner) and his son (John Lewis Casner) are often referred to as 'the Casner Brotehrs'. When they are in Donley Co., TX they own a ranch and it is known as "the Casner Brothers Ranch". On two different census records they are listed as 'brotehrs'. The last official record I find of John and John Lewis Casner is 6-1902 when they sell the last of thier land in Haskell Co., TX. The wife and children of John Lewis appear on the 1910 and 1920 NM census records. While it could be that the elder John Casner died shortly after 1902 (he was 79 years of age) John Lewis Casner was relatively young (early 40s). The elder John Casner had been in trouble with the law in IA in the 1850s, in trouble with the law in Randall Co., TX in 1877, and again in Haskell County in 1900. I guess my I'm wondering if the article in the library verticle file might be another 'skirmish with the law'. Any assistance appreciated. Liz Freeman
Ann: The following site might be useful in your quest <http://www.webcrawler.com/cgi-bin/WebQuery?showSummary=false&search=new+mex ico+prison+records>. I would suggest that you obtain a copy of the death certificate from Vital Statistics out of Santa Fe first. Most death certificates provide place of burial. While it is quite probable that there is not an obit (having been in prison), I would then check for obits in the county where he was buried. You might also check for obits in the newspapers for the county in which Santa Fe is located. I have found news articles for people who died in prison (in other states), so it might be worth a try. Good luck in your search. Liz Freeman > Bob Works died in prison in Santa Fe, NM on April 8, 1935. Are there any > newspaper articles, etc., that might have how, when, where, etc.. all that > took place. Where do I start looking? Any and all help sincerely appreciated.

Donna: My family wound up in Arabella, Meek, and Carrizozo in Lincoln County. I note with interest two of your family names - McFarland and O'Neal - any connection to the John Walter and Mary Ann (O'Neil) McFarland family. One of my family members (Claudia May Casner) married one of their sons, Henry Calvin McFarland. Would like to hear back from you if it is the same family. Liz Freeman > I don't know if this will help you or not, but my family, also cattle folk, lived in Lampasa, Gonzales & Hamilton TX. They then went to Nm, mostly the Lincoln Co, NM area. Due to water shortages, some of my family then went on to Pima/Ft. Huachuca, AZ area. Family names: McFARLAND, BARTELL, HENRY, O'NEAL. > > > > > Could someone on this list advise me of a possible migration route circa 1900 from TX to NM.
