Copies of the death index and certificates are available on film by rental at a local family history center. The actual certificates are on two series of film and go up to 1947. The records are arranged alphabetically and grouped by year and then county. Does New Mexico have a searchable death index?
Marie: I haven't found one yet but would be interested in it. Perhaps someone who has extensive knowledge regarding NM genealogy research can answer the question for both of us (and advise us how to access it if it is not online). To date, my only recourse has been to send a written query to the Bureau of Vital Statistics with appropriate funds to request a search - then be prepared to wait for weeks for a response). > Does New Mexico have a searchable death index? > >
I am researching the surname BOWNE 1488 to present only alternative spelling BOWN original spelling was DeBohn was French before 1400 thanks for any help Audrey Bowne Seattle gbowne@email.msn.com
Could someone on this list who has ordered a death certificate from Santa Fe tell me about how long it took to receive a response. I submitted a request several weeks ago with the appropriate funds and have not heard a thing back from there. I have ordered online from OR and it took 3 days to get a response; ordered snail mail from TX and it was about a week; ordered from PA and it was about two weeks. Sure would like to know what to expect from NM. Thanks for input. Liz Freeman
Hello List: I don't know if the weather in NM is as unmercifully cold there as it is here in OK (in the single digits). Anyway, it is a good day for doing all that genealogical stuff inside that one never has time for other wise. I am endeavoring to locate the final resting place of two of my CASNER people. John Casner and his son John Lewis Casner. The last oficial record found of them is in 6-1902 when they signed papers selling the last of their rangeland in TX. The family (minus John and John Lewis) are then found in 1906 up through 1920s in NM) on marriage records and census records. So presumable both died before 1910 as they are not on the 1910 census with the rest of the family. John Lewis is supposed to have died in 1-1903 in NM; no mention is ever made of when the elder Casner died. I have just made connection with one of thier descendants who grew up in NM (Lincoln and Otero Counties). She indicates there is a cemetery in Cloudcroft, NM where there are several persons buried by the name of CASNER, FIELDS, DOCKRAY. The Fields and Dockray families married into the Casner line. Is there anyone on this list who might have access to cemetery records for Cloudcroft and could check to see what persons by the name of CASNER, FIELDS, DOCKRAY might be buried there and supply the information to me. While the term 'several' was used, I doubt if there are more than six at the most. I would be thankful if only one of my Casner people were found resting in peace there.
I have made contact with a CASNER descendant that grew up in NM. I am told there are three cemetaries in Lincoln County, NM that contain burials of persons with the surname of Fields, Casner, and Dockray. I have searched several 'cemetary' sites on the net but unfortunately none are listed for Lincoln County. Does anyone on this list have access to published records of cemetaries or burials for Lincoln County, NM from 1900 to 1940. I am seeking the final resting of several persons by the last name of CASNER. Does anyone know if the Lincoln County Historical Society might have these records. Any information appreciated.
This was a very interesting site..I received this via another list and would like to share this with all of you...I click on a year and saw some history notes: http://members.theglobe.com/algis/ http://community-2.webtv.net/RAbeyta/MaternalABEYTALine/

A wonderful internet URL (which I can't give you) is the US Geological Service's Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Search for it with your browser - I get it on Internet Explorer, but I don't see its URL displayed. Anyway, GNIS showed that Spindle NM was in Lincoln County, about 22 miles NE of Capitan. GNIS further showed that Spindle had a post office from 1917 to 1920, but also said that its latitude and longitude was not known. From the latter I assume it has completely disappeared from view. I do know that my State Farm Insurance road atlas does not show it. Regards, Fritz ----- Original Message ----- From: Elizabeth E. Jim: Thanks for the URL for locating towns, etc. I now have it bookmarked - sure beats reading the atlas with a magnifying glass and trying to decide which side of the line a dot is on the map (maybe I need stronger biofocals). I have already used it several times this evening. Again, thanks. Liz Freeman

Hello Listers: Well, here I am again, still on the trail of my CASNER family that roamed around NM between 1902 and the late 1920s. A living descendant (granddughter of the younger John Casner) who is getting on up in age, has told me that the family lived in Spindle, NM at one time. Here is my problem; my atlas (published circa 1955-60) does not list Spindle, NM. Does anyone on the list know where Spindle is/was? what county might it have been in? And yes, I know I should invest in a good atlas. I have the Map Guide to the U.S. Federal Census 1790-1920 (have almost worn it out) and I have Map Guide to American Migratoin Routes, 1735-1815 which has proven invaluable. Maybe there is a website that is good for identifying these towns that have gone by the wayside. Does anyone have it bookmarked? Could you send me the URL? Thanks for any information. Liz Freeman
Hello List: I am endeavoring to locate a family that wandered NM after 6-1902. Please be patient with me for posting in this fashion; however, two living descendants who are cousins (one who is terminally ill, the other on up in age) would like to know the final resting place of their grandfather and great grandfather before they themselves are laid to rest. I am endeavoring to assist them. The story is this: John CASNER (b. circa 1822 MO/IA) was twice widowed. He is on the 1900 TX census. I have been unsuccessful in finding him on the 1910 census (in any state). He was about 79 years of age in 1900. John Louis/Lou/Lewis/Lew/Luke CASNER (b.1-4-1851 Polk Co., IA) is often referred to as being born in Ranier, OR - but this has proved to be not true; he was born in IA where his mother died giving birth to his younger brother. John Lewis CASNER is said to have died in NM in 1-1903 on the banks of a river of a heart attack while hunting pheasant and quail to feed his very large family. I also am searching for the marriage date/place of Mary Ivan Bell 'Fran' CASNER (b.1890 TX) who married William S. 'Bert' Shipp probably in 1906. Bert's last name is sometimes spelled Knibbe; he is buried under Knibbe. Their first child was born 7-1907 so they would have been married in 1906. She died in 1911 neary Arabella, NM at the birth of their only daughter. Living descendants say she was only 15-16 at the time she married. Mary is one of the daughters of John Lewis Casner mentioned above. I am also searching for the death/cemetery record of Mary. I am also searching for the marriage date/place of Samuel Jefferson CASNER (b.8-10-1899 TX) who married Mildred Violet Harris. He is one of the sons of John Lewis Casner mentioned above. I have personally searched marriage records of Curry, Lincoln, Chaves, Roosevelt counties when I was driving through NM just this fall. I did find marriage records of the rest of their brothers and sisters, and the second marriage of their mother, but none for these two. FACTS: 6-1902 John and John Lewis CASNER are at the courthouse in Haskell Co., TX where they signed papers to sell the rest of their rangeland; the sale of the land was to pay for attornies who had defended them in the trials and appeals of their part of a killing in TX. The family migrates to NM. John and John Lewis lived in NM between 1870 and 1877. 12-27-1907 Claudia Casner married Henry Calvin McFarland in Arrollo Scco, Lincoln Co. 2-26-1908 Ep Casner married Lilly Ellen Ferris at Meek,Lincoln County. 10-12-1907 Becky Clemmie Casner (wife/widow of John Lewis) married George Sidwell at Carizzo, Lincoln County. 1-11-1910 Frank marrie Fannie Trammel in Clovis, Curry County 1-25-1915 Ora Dee married Hiram Frank 'Shorty' Dockray in Arabella, Lincoln County. 5-4-1917 Jessee marrie Lee Ella Harris in Carizzo, Lincoln County Where one family member is found, several of the family members have been found-they somewhat travel in a group. The family, at various times, is found in Silver City, Hatch, Roswell, San Antonio, Farmington, Carizzo, Arabella, Capatain, Meek, in the area west from Fort Elliott, TX. As you can see, they really traveled the state. The elder John Casner always had a herd of horses with him. I have sent queries to the NM Vital Records to see if they have a record of the death of John and John Lewis Casner. I haven't heard back from them yet; probably will be some time. I guess I'm asking of anyone who has access to death/cemetery records and marriage records for ANY county in NM, if they would check to see if a record of the four CASNER people above mightr be found. I would so love to be able to give information to the two Casner Cousins to help ease their concerns. Liz Freeman
