Thanks Cindy, For general info, our wonderful staff added 11 more pages online to the 1910 Taos Census project today. Many of the names were extremely hard to read, but it is a great job overall. We will continue to edit it over time, especially the spelling ! Corrections from the public are welcomed. We also publish short to medium length family histories which we will place online. We request living persons not be included in the writeups. As time permits, a ZUMWALT history is being added from a written record. We also have a Church's minutes to complete. Too many projects, not enough fingers to type !! Hello list, I have very little to go on for this : My Cousin ,Joe Hemler ,said to have been a fairly well known rodeo rider in the southwest, was said to have died in a plane crash "somewhere " over New Mexico before 1950. >From what I have been able to find -Joe was probably born 1925-1930 the adopted son of Thomas"Ben"Hemler and my aunt Claire Grant/Hemler(rumor has it that he was "Ben's"brother's son.Claire Grant/Hemler died in 1937 & is buried at Cottonwood Arizona( am waiting for a snail mail letter to return from there)No word on where Ben ever disappeared to after Joe died. Some say Joe had a wife and 1 or 2 kids, but again no one in my family is sure of that.Joe was never in the military because of an injury (being dragged threw a branding fire by a cow/steer on a local ranch--don't know the name of the ranch)Is there an address of a New Mexico state Genealogy/Historical Society out there that I should/could write too? Hello list - I hope this message isn't too off-task for this forum. If so, I apologize. Since I was knee-high to a jackrabbit, I remember my dad telling me about the mysterious disappearance of Albert Fountain and his 8-year-old son Henry at chalk hill near present-day White Sands in the Tularosa basin. I've always been intrigued by that story and would appreciate any opinions about what really happened on that cold day in 1896. Being a former archaeologist and teacher, I decided to write a fiction based on that event, an adventure that flashes back to the story as I know it. My intent was to make the story appealing to young folks, from about 7th grade to 10th, and blending in some geology with the history. If you have a teenager or teach those grades and would like to generate a little interest in New Mexico history, maybe you'd like to check out the book. Justin Crumble and the Journey of the Dead, is available only online at Barnes&Noble.com, Amazon.com, and iUniverse.com. (There MAY be a few copies at the little bookstore in Mesilla). I think it's 9.95 per copy. Robert Jay Lambeth

This email is meant to further clarify the one I posted earlier today.... When I received the message back thru the list, I realized that I hadn't been very clear. I'd made it sound like I was talking about a place, when in fact Ackenbach is a surname. Our relative Maria Ruperta BANEGAS m. Santiago "Jim" Ackenbach abt 1867 presumably in NM The couple had two sons: 1. James Ackenbach Jr. (1877-1953) 2. Daniel Ackenbach (abt. 1880-unk.) James had one son and Daniel had 3 sons and 3 daughters; however we don't have any descendants' names beyond that third generation (children of James jr. and Daniel). Here's the whole family, as displayed in my WorldConnect gedcom: 1 Santiago"Jim" Ackenbach d: UNKNOWN + Maria-Ruperta Banegas b: 27 MAR 1857 d: 21 NOV 1940 2 James Ackenbach , Jr. b: 4 AUG 1877 d: 3 MAR 1953 3 Rube Ackenbach 2 Daniel Ackenbach b: ABT. 1880 d: UNKNOWN + Carmen Mendoza b: ABT. 1881 d: UNKNOWN 3 Santiago(Jim) Ackenbach b: ABT. 1901 d: UNKNOWN 3 Julieta Ackenbach b: ABT. 1902 d: UNKNOWN 3 Arturo Ackenbach b: ABT. 1904 d: UNKNOWN 3 Elvira Ackenbach 3 Marianita Ackenbach 3 Daniel Ackenbach Hopefully this clears up my earlier message. Is there anyone out there researching Ackenbach in NM? Particularly in Dona Ana County? I have one branch of my Banegas clan that branches off into Ackenbach-land and we ony have one generation of descendants. My grandfather was in the NM pen also. I found several documents relating to him in the governor's papers at the New Mexico State Library. He was in much earlier - 1902. Try contacting the NMSU library or search for the NM State Archives online or by telephone. The new penitentiary is built on a different site. I drove there one day several years ago. They don't take kindly to casual visitors seeking genealogical info! Good luck.
Thanks Frank. I'll try that. Hello, list. I'm interested in hearing about family members who have had tales of the Pueblo Revolt (1680) passed down through the family. I'm interested in points of view from both spanish descendants and Pueblo families. Names, dates, places, stories, anything would be appreciated. Thanks, and let in snow. Robert Jay Lambeth
I have a family of 13 brothers that roamed the west from the1850s through 1920 (I think they were all dead by then as I can't find any of them on that census). Anyway, one brother and his son by the name of John Casner and John Lewis Casner were mining in Silver City, NM in 1876-1877. Two brothers to the elder John Casner were murdered in the Palo Duro Canyon, TX in 1-1877. Shortly thereafter, the elderJohn Casner "went to town to get supplies; the supplies were wrapped in old newspapers; when he unwrapped the supplies, he was reading the newspaper and came across the news about his two brothers being murdered. He shows up in TX in 3-1877. My question is this: Assuming (oh me there is that troublesome word) the newspaper was from Silver City, NM, does anyone on this list know if Silver City, NM had a newspaper for the time fram 1-1877 through 3-1877? If so, would it be on microfilm at the State Library in Santa Fe or would it be on microfilm at a genealogical society in Grant County (I think that is where Silver City is located). Any information appreciated. Liz Freeman In OK!

Untitled[I'm resending this via NEW-MEXICO-L, because it the original sent message bounced back from your email server] Marie~ That link should have taken you to the page Sam has set up regarding the NMDI project. Hello again Cindy, The hyper link listed below takes me to a New Mexico internet connection service. I am unable to find anything to do with genealogy on it. Any hints, what am I doing wrong? Marie ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- New Mexico Death Index Project Many thanks for your interest about the New Mexico Death Index (NMDI) Project. The project is being hosted by Rootsweb and headed by myself. Updates of the project at toward the end of this page. Let me tell you more about the project. This project consist of the death index complied by the Health Department in State of New Mexico, in counties that issued death certificates between the years of 1899 to 1940. There are two books (on microfilm of film numbers 1991645 & 1991646) of death indices are available via the FHC (Family History Center) in Salt Lake City. This project consist of typing up an assigned letter or letters in one or both books (via photocopies) into a database. When all the letters are completed, Rootsweb will be hosting the NM Death Index on-line for any New Mexican Researcher. Take a look at California or Texas Death Index on-line, hosted by Rootsweb at to see how the New Mexico Death index will look at: http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi http://userdb.rootsweb.com/tx/death/search.cgi We do not need any more volunteers for the NMDI Project! The FHC only has a limited number of these films for rental. As there are to many volunteers that would be requiring the films to do this project and spread out over the country, there are not enough films to go around. Therefore, the project had to make photocopies for the volunteers to type up. This brings us to a major problem. We need donations for the photocopying fund. If anyone would like to donate to this fund, any amounts are most welcome. This project will benefit all researchers doing some kind of work in New Mexico. The average donation is between $5 to $10. Send any donation to: Sam Padilla G. 1520 Univ. BL.,NE#314 Albq., NM 87102-1723 (and make the cheque or money order to: Sam Padilla G.) e-mail: samquito@nmia.com Therefore, we are looking for donations for the photocopying fund. For any donation, your name would be mention on the NMDI web site! Here is a budget breakdown for everyone to look at: Photocopies (film one only*) $265.00 Postage ($3.20 x 20) $ 64.00 Photocopies (film two only*) $202.50 Postage ($3.20 x 16) $ 51.20 Total Debt $582.70 Donation received (as of 21/Dec)$770.00 Total Debt (as above) $582.70 Credit $187.30 *film one-index years 1899-1930; film two-index years 1931-1940 If we received more donation money past the debt cost (listed above), it will be held over for the 1941-1950 Death Index Project (as listed below). Estamite cost for film three (index years 1941-1950) Photocopies (film three) $240.00 Postage ($3.95* x 25) $ 98.75 Total estimate debt $338.75 * Postage rate increase on 7 January 2001; Using Priority Mail new rate at $3.95 Estimate Debt (film three only) $338.75 Credit donations (as above) $187.30 New Estimate debt (as of 21/Dec) - $151.45 I want to give a BIG THANK YOU the following people & organizations whom made a donation (*) or volunteering (#) on the New Mexico Death Index Project: Harold Kilmer (*), Robert England (*#), Charles Barnum (*), Tana Collis (*#), Patricia Black-Esterly (*), Annette W. My e-mail address: samquito@nmia.com NMDI History and Background All of the Volunteers are busy typing away on their assigned letters from indices one (years 1899 to 1930) and two (years 1931 to 1940). Some of the letters have been completed and are being formatted to a database format which Rootsweb will host. A bit about the Volunteers and Donors of the NMDI Project. The Volunteers are from all over the USA (CA, AZ, NV, NC, WA, MD, MN, TX, MO, ID, CO, GA & NM). There are different reasons for volunteering for this project. Some have interest in the State of New Mexico and others were looking for a project. A couple of the Volunteers are shut-ins or caretakers for shut-ins and wanted something to do during the quiet hours. The Donors are a major help to this project! As some of the Volunteers could not afford to give a donation (and it was not a requirement for Volunteers to donate), the wonderful people whom have donated to the photocopying fund are covering this part and a major part of the NMDI Project. All Volunteers and Donors will be noted on the NMDI Web site for their generosity. I am pleased to announce that we are out-of-debt. But any donations are still welcomed, as further donation will go toward the 1941-1950 Death Index transcription project in 2001/2. The address to send donation is listed above. NMDI Update (30/Dec/2000) When the project started, we set a deadline of 1/December/2000 for the database to be completed. This date was chosen as a goal to reach for the volunteers. Some delays have postponed the completation of this project, and hope to have the NMDI Project up and running by 1/March/2001.
