Dear Janet, I normally don't jump in on these things but I do so agree with all the positive things the others have said about you not unsubscribing and not changing your name. My goodness. My mother went to school with a two sisters named "Ima Hogg and Ura Hogg". And I could go on and on as could we all. Hang in there and be proud of your heritage and the wonderful name you were given by someone very special in your life. If we could all choose our own name wouldn't that be a mess? Just remember the old saying, "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me". Good luck with your research and keep it up! Jean in Texas
Dear Janet, Re your message below. What a gracious response and I applaude your dignity in the face of ... (oh dear, I had better not say that). How completely, totally sad that someone would contact you and comment on that. My heavens.... we are on here to share and learn and enjoy each other not to pick at one another. And DON'T you dare unsub from the list. It is the positive people that need to stay on lists like this. Not the ones who don't have anything else to do but say negative things to someone. Dear Janet: Please don't unsubscribe. Your contribution was useful. As to your AOL name, on the surface it appears to be a pejorative but your explanation is satisfactory. Regards, Frank.
You shouldnt have to unsubscribe from this or ANY LIST..If someone is offend by your name..they should leave not YOU!... We are all looking for our ancestors and if they have a name that is unusual or has a meaning to something else.It should not matter! A NAME IS A NAME to what or who ever!..We do not get to pick what names were are born with.and we are taught to be very proud of the name we do have.. I agree with you Janet!....Be proud of your name and continue to use it always!!!! Rose in NC http://community-2.webtv.net/RAbeyta/MaternalABEYTALine/
List, I was kindly notified my screen name may be offensive to some people. It is not JANET SQUAW. It is my maiden name Janet S. Quaw. I used this because I knew I could always remember it. I have always signed my name Janet S. I did not use my married name for privacy reasons. I am half Indian and do not mean anything derogatory, but if it is that offensive to you, I will unsubscribe from this list, but I will not change my name. I've had it many years. Respectfully yours. Janet S.
While I think it is a good idea to screen for TRULY offensive names, I would think that the bearer of the name should be allowed an explanation before they are duly dismissed. Though I am not Native American and see nothing inherently offensive in the word itself, I know that the word "squaw" has been used in a derogatory manner in the past, and that therefore Native Americans are understandably sensitive to its usage. Even if the last name was in fact Squaw, and not Quaw, I myself would use the name proudly. I apologize on behalf of anyone who was that prejudicial. My personal apologies to any Native American who finds my attitude offensive somehow. It is not intended. Please don't leave the list on that account. Nancy Hargiss California, USA
I must have missed the post about the name. I would hope that Janet does not unsubscribe due to others not approving of her name. She has as much to a right to the list as the rest and should not have to unsubscribe due to her name. Hi List, I'm sure most of us oldies know this, but some of the newbies may like it for their records. 1.) To find a county in a state and you only know the town; ROOTSWEB.COM Cover page; scroll down on left hand side to RESEARCH TEMPLATE , Click on United States Counties/States Enter name of town and state, click search. It will give you the name or names of the different counties this town or city is in. You can click on any of them and will take you to the home page for that county. 2.) If you just want to find a county, repeat the process as above, but instead of putting in name of town and state, continue to scroll down on the page and click on the state you need. On the left hand side, scroll down. It will give you a list of the counties in that state. You may click on them to find info needed in that county. It takes you to the home page for that county. Hope this helps someone. Jan, in Indiana
Probably the "Gallup Independent" would have carried the info. I don't know about info in Santa Fe, but that newspaper has been there forever, and is still publishing. I believe Gallup is the county seat for McKinley County, If Grants has a newspaper, you might try there, also. Grants is now part of a new county, Cibola, created about 15 years ago.Thoreau, (pronounced threw) is between Gallup and Grants. If they were on tribal lands, the "Navajo Times", in Window Rock, AZ, might be another source. The correct spelling is "Thoreau" and it is very near Gallup. Gallup publishes a daily newspaper. We go there often but I can't remember the name of it. Call the Gallup Visitors Bureau at 800-242-4282 or 505-863-3841 and ask them for the phone number of the newspaper. The paper might do the research over the phone. I sent your inquiry on the Casner Bros. to my cousin in Silver City. He will have to make the decision whether or not to check those papers for you. Good luck, Frank.
Hello List. I have just learned that the Silver City Museum, 312 W. Broadway, Silver City, NM has the Silver City Newspapers from 1873 - 1943 on microfilm at the Museum and that these are accessible by the public. Is there anyone on the list who might be willing to do a newspaper search for me either in Silver City or Santa Fe). I am more than willing to reimbuse for time and expenses. I am searching for an article concerning the murder of two CASNER brothers (William and Daniel CASNER) that occurred 1-20-1877 in Palo Duro Canyon, TX. Another brother, John CASNER, and his son, John Lewis CASNER, were mining in the Silver City area, when they learned of the murders by reading of it from newspapers which were used to wrap supplies they had purchased in Silver City. The article would have appeared in the newspaper sometime between 1-20-1877 and 3-31-1877. Hoping to hear from somone. Liz Freeman In OK!
Hello List: I have an individual named Jessee Lee Casner who died 2-11-1960 in/near Thureau, McKinley County, NM. My understanding is that he was working on a ranch near Thureau and died as a result of some type of ranching accident. Does anyone on this list know which newspaper would be the most likely to have carried an article concerning the accident/death? If a newspaper could be identified, would this newspaper be on microfilm at the State Library in Santa Fe? It would not be an obituary, as the family took the body to Winslow, AZ where he was buried. Thank you for any information. Liz Freeman In OK!
Hello List: I am searching for the final resting place of John Lewis CASNER who died 1-1903 in NM, but place unknown. I have talked with serveral elderly descendants of this person and the only thing alike in the story of his death is that he "died on the banks of a river of a heart attack while hunting quial and pheasant to feed his large family". In talking with the descendants, one provided me with the following information regarding San Marcial, in Socorro County that she had copied several years ago but failed to make note of her source. "San Marcial, Socorro County, was located three miles east of U.S. 85 and about 35 miles south of Socorro. San Marcial was destroyed by flood from the Rio Grande River in 1866 and was reestablished on higher ground, but in 1929 it was again destroyed by flood and was never rebuilt. The old Anglo Cemetery remains standing, but has been sadly neglected." My questions: (1) Does anyone on this list know if the "old Anglo Cemetery" has been inventoried/canvassed and who would have these records. (2) Is there a place that a person could write to for checking records of that particular cemetery? Thank you for any information. Liz Freeman In OK!
For those of you who have suffered my repeated inquiries concerning my grandfather, here is one result of our labors: H. H. HARGIS ASSASSINATED AT VAUGHN, N. M. ---------- Shot From Second Story Window While Leaving Barber Shop Thursday Morning After Having Trouble With McNabb. ---------- HE WAS AGENT FOR THE SOUTHWESTERN ---------- News was received in this city Thurs. at noon that H. H. [Herbert Henry] Hargis, agent for the Southwestern [RR] at Vaughn, had been assassinated. It was quite while before any of the particulars could be learned. It seems that Mr. Hargis had some trouble with a traveling man, Bert [Edward] McNabb, and on Thursday morning at about 9:30 as Hargis was leaving the barbershop at Vaughn, McNabb fired from a second story window of the house opposite, the ball striking Hargis in the back and killing him almost instantly. H. H. McElroy and several Tucumcari citizens went to Vaughn Thursday night and the preliminary trial is being held today. The body of Mr. Hargis passed through Tucumcari this morning en route to Kansas, where his wife resides and where he will be buried. We have been informed that Mr. Hargis was preparing to leave Vaughn and had requested the officials of the road to send the auditor and check him out. This was being done when he was shot. He had wired his wife that he was coming home Tursday [sic] night. H. H. Hargis is well known in Tucumcari where he and his most excellent wife had many friends. He came to Tucumcari several years ago, and was agent of the E.P. & S.W. until two years ago. He was employed by the M. B. Goldenberg Co. as bookkeeper. About a year ago he went to Torrance to take charge of the railroad office there, and was transferred from Torrance about six months ago. He was at one time Master of the Masonic Lodge at Tucumcari, was a member of the I.O.O.F. No. 18 of Tucumcari, and at the time of his death was master of the Masonic Lodge which was recently instituted at Vaughn. He leaves a wife [Margaret Drach] and one child, a son of 11 years of age [Gerald Drache Hargis]. - The Tucumcari News and Tucumcari Times, Saturday, October 15, 1910, Vol. 9 No. 3, p. 1 It's always a pleasure when the family legends turn out to be true! Hi all. I live only about an hour away from Ft. Wayne IN library. They are the second largest Genealogy Library in the country. Second only to Salt Lake City. I go often. They have tons and tons of material for research which includes all parts of the country. They have all census on microfilm for the entire country, and thousands of other materials. I have decided to offer to do look-ups and offer some assistance. Let me know if you are interested in any look-ups from there. Please email responses directly to me at rexwb@jayco.net so that we do not clutter the list with the responses. Include the word "Look-up" in the subject line so I don't miss your messages.
