This note is to remind everyone about the Border Book Festival going on now in Las Cruces. The theme this year is "Ancestral Voices", a topic with obvious significance to those interested in history, genealogy, or books in general. On this saturday and sunday there will be a trade show at Loretto Towne Park, 505 South Main, adjacent to Main and Lohman. (One way for folks from out of town to easily locate the center--it's directly east of the ONLY HIGH-RISE building in Las Cruces, Security Bank Building! If you're interested, stop by my table if you want me to sign your copy of "Justin Crumble", to talk about the Fountain murders in 1896, to purchase a copy, or just to chat. If you'd like to read a synopsis of "Justin Crumble and the Journey of the Dead" first, check it out at: http://shop.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=2IBELXWFC5&mscssid=MH8HNP4BAWJ68N448TV83W16H0570S9A&isbn=0595144888 Hope to you you there? Hello, I ordered some marriage records from NM and all of them that I have gotten have just been say .50 each. All I got was copy not certified so that way they are cheaper. I have gotten some from years 1914, and 1955. Hope this helps. Has anyone ordered a marriage certificate from a county recorders office before? I know my great grandparents Elfego Tafoya and Escolastica Trujillo were married by a justice of the peace, probably in 1908 and most likely in Mora County. I have only been able to find a phone number for the county recorder of Mora County. I thought I would check to see if anyone has done this previously before I call. Any help is appreciated. I have the Persi 2000 index and would be glad to look-up articles by surname or by county and state. Will then send you a list of all article titles that match your criteria. If there are any that catch your attention, I will be glad to make arrangements to get copies of any of the articles you want for a small fee to help cover gas, parking, copies, postage, etc. The Allen Co. Library has all of these periodicals. If you are not Lfamiliar with Persi, you need to be. Here is a description of Persi. Let me know if I can do a look-up from the index for you. Be pre-warned, there may be a long list of matches depending on the search you request. As an example, if you ask me for any articles pertaining to a particular County, you are likely to get a lengthy list of matches to look through. Don't get me wrong; I'll be glad to send the list to you, and as I mentioned, can then make arrangements to get copies of any that you feel may be helpful to you. The Periodical Source Index, or PERSI, is the largest and most widely used index of articles from genealogy and local history periodical articles in the world. PERSI began as a project of the Allen County Public Library in Ft Wayne, Indiana. Under the direction of Michael Clegg, their lofty goal was to gather all genealogical periodicals, both past and present, and index their contents. This growing database has become the largest dataset of its kind, and is renowned as a key to superior genealogical research. PERSI is a comprehensive subject index of periodical articles on genealogy and local history written in English and French (Canadian entries) since 1800. The collection also includes literature dating from the 1700s, although the collection before 1800 is less complete. PERSI is a work in progress--In the current May 2000 release, Allen County Public Library added more than 400,000 citations, bringing the total number of fully searchable records to more than 1.5 million. The index catalogs almost 5,500 different periodicals, listing every article according to locality, family (surname), and/or research method. Let me know if you'd like a look-up. Was there any kind of influx of Welshmen to NM in the 1870s-80? If do, I would like info about that. Thanks. Mona
Searching for any info on David W. DAVIS who died in NM in either Dec. 1880 or Jan. 1881, as he was buried with his family in Baltimore on Jan. 10, 1881. Davis was born in Wales and was 37 when he died of pneumonia. He may have been a coppersmelter. I also would like any info on Welshmen in NM at that time. Thanks! Mona

Below is the message that I sent Janet Quaw. I had no way of knowing that was her last name. I never said anything rude or suggested she leave the list. She overreacted to my message. She should have just explained the situation and ended it there. I just want people to know what this word means. I never would have thought anything had it said Janet Quaw but MANY people don't use their real name and many people like myself search for indian ancestors in New Mex. Hope this clears it up! Brigitte ----------- Hello, My name is brigitte. I saw your name on the new mexico list. I am 1/2 indian and thought I should inform you about the word squaw. It is the blackfeet word for vagina. That is what the french fur traders called indian women back in the day. It is now considered a similar thing to the "n" word. I just helped put a petition together to change the name of squaw mountain because of this. Have a good day! Brigitte

I came across a good web site called "List of Spanish American Veterans Buried in New Mexico." The address is www.spanamwar.com/NewMexico.htm Contains photos, rosters and links to other related sites. Regards, Frank Brito.
I am new to the list. I am helping a friend search for her family history. Her last name is Sena. Her father's family was supposed to be always from the Albuquerque area. Father's still alive but won't talk about past family members for some reason. Fathers name is Jose Agustin Sena. WE would appreciate any information anyone may have. Thank you Ginger Hanson
