Early settlement began in the 1816 to 1820 period with disbanded British soldiers and Swiss mercenaries from the Napolionic war and the War of 1812 who were given land grants to solve domestic economic problems back in the old country and to provide a battle hardened militia to protect Britain's Canadian territories from military invasion from the USA. They were soon followed by Scottish emigrants from the Glasgow area via the work of the Lanark Emigration Societies. There are so many families who came from Comrie Scotland that the two towns of Comrie Scotland and Carleton Place, Ontario have "twinned" and delegations visit back and forth regularly. Hundreds of thousands of descendants of these hardy pioneers now reside across Canada, the USA and beyond..... Visit the site and say "Gidday"!
