    3. At the 1998 Annual Meeting of the Membership on May 5, the East Tennessee Historical Society presented Awards of Excellence in several categories. Most notably, the Ramsey Award for Lifetime Achievement, was presented to Virginia Whisman Niceley for her lifelong contributions on behalf of East Tennessee history at the Ramsey House Plantation. Awards were presented in the following categories: 1. Ramsey Award for Lifetime Achievement 2. The McClung Award (presented to the author of the best article published in the Journal of East Tennessee History) 3. Award of Distinction 4. Teaching Excellence Award 5. History in the Media 6. Distinguished Service Award 7. Research Excellence Award 8. ETHS Volunteer Service Award 9. ETHS Museum Volunteer Service Award 10.
