A friend wrote that she couldn't find a great URL, and she was desperately looking for it: "When I first started hunting for ancestors, I went to our library and got on line, and not knowing what I was doing, ran into a site where you can search a state by a name and get pedigree charts -- really neat." It does sound great! Does anyone know about this?? Thanks! Barbara

A suggestion for those who want to upgrade their subscriber bases to newsletters: I use a combination of methods. For one, I purchase the annual ProCD disks with names, addresses and telephone numbers across the US. From this I create mailing lists on a state by state or zip code basis (however you want it) downloading the surname I want to reach. I then use an introductory letter, a couple of pages of a recent newsletter, and a subscription offer page. I will usually get 1% to 2% returns in bad addresses but if you mail first class you can request address correction. My subscription return has averaged 3% to 5% which is well over the average return for direct mail response. Your envelope should have the name of the surname newsletter and address for the return address or you will fall into the junk mail catagory. I also use regular postings on NGS and on the genealogical newsgroups on the Internet. As you all well know, I also post announcements on Roots Web and will usually get 1 or 2 subscribers each time I post. You should use postings on your surname group on Roots also. The secret of the whole approach is to create a REGULAR mailing campaign and stick to it. You can get 1000 letters printed almost a cheaply as 500 and you simply mail X number EVERY month. You also might consider packaging a reply envelope with your mailing. I take CC and checks by fax, phone and mail which really helps. I had a new subscriber call last night and provide a CC number by phone. I got a check by fax yesterday afternoon. This way you are not waiting for the check in the mail. For those who are doing freebie mailings, you should have no problems building your mail list especially online newsletters. I created a online mail group separate from the GRIGGS-L on Roots and it has a growing subscriber list. I use this list to promote the newsletter, research and other tips and suggestions. You do not want to use your mail list for total self-promotion because you will lose subscribers. You have to have regular contributions of good information usable by your subscribers if you want to maintain interest. Lastly, I have also used cheap postcard mailings to promote the newsletter. This cuts your cost to around.28c per mailing including postage, card and printing. You can use many different computer packages to prepare your own mailings and print out 25 or more cards every week for mailing. This is the least expensive way to go and it gets around a 1 1/2% to 2% regular response. More tips if you want them. Lee Griggs -- MultiServ Enterprises, Inc. The monthly gathering of the Mobile Genealogical Society is held the second Saturday of each month at the old St. Joan of Arc School located at the corner of South Ann Street and Elmira Street in the Historic Oakleigh Garden District in Mobile, Alabama. Doors open at 11:30am and a Genealogy "How To..." Workshop is conducted at high noon. This is followed by a short intermission and then our monthly Members' Meeting and Speaker Program. On June 13th, our workshop topic will be "How To Get The Most Out of the PERSI (Periodical Source Index) CD-Rom." This will be conducted by Laura Lee Scott of Milton, Florida, who (among other things) is the president of the West Florida Genealogical Society and the author of _Genealogical Gleanings_. The featured speaker of the day will be Clinton King of Mobile whose topic will be "A Look at Federal Land Records." Non-members are welcome to attend one or two meetings as our guest, after which we hope you will join and support the Society. The MGS Library is also located in the old St. Joan of Arc School. Library hours are Mondays from 10am to 2pm, Tuesdays from 4pm to 7pm, Fridays from 11am to 3pm and Saturdays from 12pm to 3pm (except during the monthly Members' Meeting). The MGS Library and Media Center is a private facility for the benefit of MGS members. We receive no public funds and depend upon memberships, donations and fund-raising to operate, therefore, use of the facility and its holdings is FREE to MGS members. Non-members may use the facility for a donation of $5.00 per person, per day. I have started a home page. This is just the start. I have a lot of work to do on it yet. The people in my family stretch from Nils Dahlstedt who was born in 1749 to my newest grandchild Cristofer Aaron Campbell who was born on Mother's Day, (May 10, 1998) Cristofer will be joined by a cousin in December so this family tree is growing. Please visit us at: http://sony.inergy.com/DahlstedtRoots AND be sure to check back in a few weeks as most of the info will be in, as well as pictures Betty Dahlstedt
For those who have sent their banner information thank you. I have recently changed the website policy and will have the banners placed on my server and will still have a link going to your server so all anyone has to do is click on your banner and go to your site. For those who haven't seen the site the url is as follows: http://members.xoom.com/present/banner.htm Thanks, Jeffery -- "The Present Meets The Past" http://home.earthlink.net/~howardorjeff/ "Addicted To Genealogy Ribbon" http://members.xoom.com/present/addicted/ "Quirky Surnames" http://members.xoom.com/present/ "The Park/e/s Research Page" http://home.earthlink.net/~howardorjeff/park/ "The Car(e)y Research Page" http://home.earthlink.net/~howardorjeff/cary/
Given to me by my sister, here is a great site to spend lots of time on research. Put name, location, war any thing you want to research in the search and it locates books & journals and you can read the page with the information on it. Its the 'Making of America' site at the U of Michigan <http://www.umdl.umich.edu/moa/index.html> ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Good evening, I have just added two more pages to the above site. Please feel free to visit and let me know your comments. This site is about making connections with all Morris researchers and has reall gone to town. The team work from all the volunteers is amazing. http://genweb.net/~morris/ Thanks much, Addie
Since there seems to be some that have a problem I have now added two plans on the site. Plan one is I link to your banner directly to it on your server and plan two is I place banner on my server but it can't be over 8k in size and you must place the code back to the page. Perhaps this will be a good compromise on everyones part. http://members.xoom.com/present/banner.htm Sincerely, Jeffery -- "The Present Meets The Past" http://home.earthlink.net/~howardorjeff/ "Addicted To Genealogy Ribbon" http://members.xoom.com/present/addicted/ "Quirky Surnames" http://members.xoom.com/present/ "The Park/e/s Research Page" http://home.earthlink.net/~howardorjeff/park/ "The Car(e)y Research Page" http://home.earthlink.net/~howardorjeff/cary/
