    1. [NEW-GEN-URL-L] Connect With Surnames
    2. Amy Harris Brown
    3. A few days ago I posted a message stating that I was accepting surname submissions for a new webpage that I was creating. I was overwhelmed by the wonderful response! Thanks to all who have taken an interest! There are over 1000 unique surnames that have been submitted in just 5 days! Anyway, to view the lists of surnames and people or websites researching them, visit: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/4239/viewsurnames.html There is a link there to submit up to 15 surnames, if you like. I am hoping to help everyone make genealogy connections or at least new friends! If you submit your surnames with your email address or website address, give me a couple of days to add them. I upload the revised pages once a day, around 3:00 Central Time. No person nor website is listed that did not request to be listed. Thanks, Amy

    1. [NEW-GEN-URL-L] NE Books Online - Hingham, Bristol County histories - http://genweb.net/~blackwell/books.html
    2. David Blackwell
    3. Hello New England Researchers, Here is some progress on the NE books online effort. http://genweb.net/~blackwell/books.html --------------------------------------------------------------- News Item 1: Lisa Whiting has done a great job editing two sections of the online History of Hingham, published 1893. Specifically the Military and Education sections are now in HTML format and almost all of their OCR (Optical Character Recognition) errors are fixed. http://genweb.net/~blackwell/ma/hingham/Hingham1893.html There are still some unreadable parts on my xerox copy of the book that was the source of the scans. The G4 TIFF images of most of the 4 books are online and the raw, mostly unedited, OCR text files of the books are also online http://genweb.net/~blackwell/ma/hingham/ but have a multitude of OCR errors. ----------------------------------------------------------------- News Item 2: I am scanning and OCRing the History of Bristol County, pub.1883. It has good town histories and a couple good maps. I've done about a QUARTER of it. http://genweb.net/~blackwell/ma/bristol/b000toc.html and http://genweb.net/~blackwell/ma/bristol/ Take a LOOK, it is no where near done but it's "neat". These OCR text files are very readable. The county and town histories are very interesting Since I am scanning from the original book (not a xerox); it OCRs much better, but it takes a HUNDRED times longer to scan in a bound book on a flatbed scanner than to scan in a loose leaf xerox copy on the automatic feed scanner. I am also scanning at 300 dpi (dots per inch) so the small print OCRs much better. ------------------------------------------------------------------ I will not have time to do much more web stuff for a while. I have to work and enjoy the summer. Best Regards, David Blackwell - [email protected] 72 Center St. Groveland Mass. 01834 http://genweb.net/~blackwell/ PS take a look at http://www.umdl.umich.edu/moa/ - This is a great online library 4000+ volumes PPS Putting New England books online will take a LONG time. I hope other New England researchers will each put a book online, or help others to do so. DCB
