Hey gang, Just wanted to let y'all know that the free Rookie's Guide to Genealogy Research has just been updated to include lessons on PAF 4. More will follow. The Guide is at http://www.acceleratedgenealogy.com. Description of the Rookie's Guide: In order to train staff members at the Provo Utah South Family History Center -- and train other folks out there who need succinct, step-by-step lessons -- I'm posting on the Web a 30-lesson guide on how to do genealogy research. About half the lessons are posted now. When I've finished posting all the lessons, the site will contain the following subjects: Unit 1: Gathering and Organizing Family Records * Starting Out Introduction to the Family History Library The Research Process The Golden Rule of Genealogy * Identify What you Know: Recording Information Golden Rule of Genealogy: Work from the Known to the Unknown Using Forms * Family Interviews Correspondence Types Process Correspondence & Guerilla Tactics Equipment for Oral Interviews * Organizing Your Files Motivations Components of a Filing System Instructions * Personal Ancestral File (PAF): Basic Editing Creating a PAF file Adding & Editing Individuals Unlinking & Deleting Individuals * Documenting Sources in PAF 3 PAF 3 Advancements PAF 3 Shortcomings Workarounds * PAF Backups Unit 2: LDS Survey Sources: Searching, Downloading, & Submitting * Ancestral File: Searching * Ancestral File: Downloading GEDCOM Files * PAF: Importing and Exporting GEDCOM Files * PAF: Merging & Linking Individuals * Ordinance Index (The new IGI), Social Security Death Index, Military Index, and Scottish Church Records * Submissions: Ancestral File, the IGI, and the Golden Rule * Ancestral File: Submitting & Correcting * Submitting to the IGI & Ordinance Index * Vital Records Index: North America Unit 3: Finding Aids * Selecting Record Types & Using Research Guides * SourceGuide * Family History Library Catalog (FHLC) * Finding the Right Locality Gazetteers AniMap Handy Book Red Book Maps Unit 4: Using Major Source Types * Census/Tax Records * Vital Records * Church Records * Probates * History * Biography * Family History/Genealogy * Periodicals/Newspapers * Obituaries * Bible Records * Land Records * Court Records * Directories * Military Records * Immigration/Emigration Records The course is at http://www.acceleratedgenealogy.com. Unit 4 should get pretty interesting, as I'll be scanning in original records to illustrate the kinds of information available within each record type. I'll also be covering special issues, like how to order Civil War pensions from the National Archives, how to map a deed on a range and township map, and how to trace immigrants using Gerald Haslam's "prongs on a plug" approach. -Michael

Hi Lists, I am pleased to announce a new addition to the Historic Plaques of the World Project. I received an invitation to visit Dr. Ross Bastiaan's Australian Bronze Commemorative Plaques Project (Website). This plaques project is to do with Australia's part in war and peace throughout the world. I will paste here (with permission) about Dr. Ross Bastiaan. You can access the site by going to my main url http://www.waynecook.com and click on The Historic Plaques of the World Project Directory. "Since 1990 Ross Bastiaan has privately and voluntarily placed over 100 large bronze commemorative plaques around the world recording Australia's amazing achievements in war and commitment to defending world peace. The plaques, many one-metre square and weighing over 8o kg are set in three tonnes of concrete. The plaques are often at the actual sites of Australia's finest military achievements. The Bastiaan plaques are usually designed with a central bas-relief map of the region as it exists today. On this map is superimposed the geographical features of the battle commemorated. For the visitor these maps assist orientation and a multilingual text, surrounding the map, outlines essential historical details. The plaques stand in 16 countries around the world including Turkey, Greece, England, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, Indonesia, France, Belgium, Australia, Israel, Egypt, Libya and Burma and record Australia's role in war from Gallipoli (1915) to the Gulf (1990). Ross Bastiaan was born in 1951 and is a full time periodontist in private practice in Melbourne. Alone he initiated the concept of the plaques after visiting Gallipoli in 1987 where he found almost no information about the battlefield for the English-speaking visitor. This lack of information gave birth to the "Plaques Project". Bastiaan has personally hand sculpted each bronze plaque and written a plain text, oriented to the layman and compiled from the Official Histories. The most difficult aspect of the project was the often-lengthy negotiations that Bastiaan conducted with foreign Governments to ensure that the plaques were acceptable for permanent placement on foreign soil. The plaques, collectively costing over a quarter of a million dollars, have been predominantly privately funded through private companies approached by the sculptor. These many companies share with him a pride in Australia's past and a desire to record the nations history for the future. The sculptor has installed the majority of the plaques himself. Ceremonial unveilings have often coincided with official Government commemorative pilgrimages and Governor-Generals, Prime Ministers and war veterans have performed such unveilings. The work behind these plaques has resulted in Bastiaan receiving the Medal of the Order of Australia, the Returned and Services League's (RSL) Anzac of the Year and appointment to the Council of the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. The work on the plaques, over many years, has been a private commitment of one man to his country." All genealogy websites that have Harris information are welcome to join the Harris Surname Webring. The webring has 40 sites, and has a lot of traffic for it's size and nature. The URL to join is http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Bluffs/7708/familytree/harris.html To JOIN a webring, you must have a website, but anyone with a web browser can take advantage of the information that the webring has to offer. To travel through the various sites in the webring, go to the link above and click on the word NEXT or PREV, etc in the Harris Webring table. It will take you to a different website in the webring. After you view the data on that site, find the table on that website and continue your journey. *******Also, another wonderful place to check out Harris information is the Harris-Hunters mailing list homepage at http://millennium.fortunecity.com/newchurch/11 This contains a HUGE database (over 9000 individuals) of Harris information and related families in webpage format or in the new ZIP file. Both the Harris Webring page and the Harris-Hunters page contain guestbooks to leave your Harris queries. If you have any questions or need help accessing the websites, please contact me. Amy, I am descended from Hugh William Harris who married Lucinda Blagg. They lived in Randolph County, AL and later migrated to TN. Have you heard of him? Is there a connection? They moved to TN right before the War between the States. Also, I am descended from the Chambers of Carroll County, GA, they later ended up in AL. They were originally from Haywood County (I believe this is correct) North Carolina. I am descended from John T. Chambers and Lydia Hawkins. Just interested to see if there is any connection. Thanks! Hello Everyone: I have made some changes and additions to the Death Index. You may need to use your refresh or reload button to see them. Although I have added stuff to the Xoom site, I have mainly been focused on the RootsWeb pages and it is here that I have put some of the pages into a Text format. They load much faster. Eventually I will be closing down the Xoom site. Please use the following link: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nettimae/modeaths/ I would like to thank everyone who answered my question regarding 'potter' as an occupation. I have another question--What is a footstone and should they be listed on the death index? I have a few listings such as A.M.L with no dates or info other than the cemetery. Let me know your thoughts on this and, as always, send me your death info---Nettie Mae The Hoadley Connection: <http://nettie_mae.tripod.com> Online Missouri Death Index: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nettimae/modeaths/ AllAdvanage (I made $34.15 in 3 wks just surfing. There is a new mail list and web site at Rootsweb!! This list is for the submission of newspaper abstracts. Newspapers are a wonderful and often overlooked resource for those researching their families. Many fascinating and descriptive details can be found about the lives our ancestors from the businesses they frequented to the hardships they endured while trying to build a new life in a new land. Even letters home from men at war detailing their daily accounts were occasionally printed for all to read. Over the years many records were lost or destroyed in fires, floods and natural disasters. Newspapers include notations on births, illnesses and deaths that occured before local and state governments began keeping records. Other items such as tax rolls, local military rosters, court notifications in chancery and probate, separations and divorces are also given mention. Many newspapers managed to survive the test of time and can now be found at most state libraries on microfilm and are available thru inter-library loan for viewing at your local library. To view our web site, click here: Newspaper Abstracts Home Page (http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~newspapr/) And to join our mail list send an email to: Newspaper-Abstracts-L-request@rootsweb.com or Newspaper-Abstracts-D-request@rootsweb.com (if you prefer the digest version) and in the body of the message write only the word: subscribe Have a wonderful week, Barbara Freeman http://members.aol.com/saxbury http://www.genexchange.com/MO/index.cfm http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~newspapr/
