    3. MARIAH (ANNIE) MC BRENNAN/BRENNAN Tis a sad story of Mariah Brennan. She was but a young lass when she landed on the shores of America. She took up servicing the wealthy as a maid in the summer resort of Narragansett. It was in Narragansett that she met a young fisherman, Edward Morton Tourjee whom she shortly married thereafter. They spent the rest of their lives in South Kingstown, R.I., and raising their 8 children. Mariah, died 9 Nov. 1912 and took with her to her grave the secrets of her childhood. Several stories of speculation have swirled around one being…..she and two sisters stowed away on a ship to America after fleeing the grips of the enslaved Catholic Work Houses that operated throughout Ireland. The second theory is that she, her parents and numerous brother and sister came to America to improve their standard of living. It has been noted that one of her sisters married a Dr. Hathaway in Providence, but unfortunately no proof has ever verified this story. We are not even sure of her true name, as so many were used in public records. Mariah also known as Annie was a small spindly, feisty lady that always wore black, minced no time on frivolities. Mariah did not approve of smoking but was know to always carry a flask for medicinal purposes. The many descendants that Mariah has left behind still wonder what the real story is behind this mysterious young woman that left her homeland to make a new life for herself. Was it too horrible to remember or was Mariah just a product of the tough times, so many faced in Ireland, or were the mystical promises of the new land too tempting to resist? Any clues or ideas would be appreciated by so many…..thank you.
