    1. [NEVILLE-L] Alabama: Squire Nevels
    2. Jan & David Faulkner
    3. Shirley and others interested in the AL Neville groups, While I was looking at Zach. Nevil who lived in Tuscaloosa, AL and whose family was from Amherst and Albemarle Co., VA, I realized Squire Nevels, a person whom Ruth and I have discussed before, was living in the same county at the same time as Zach. I don't know if there is any relationship between the two but will post some information I have that might help those of you searching AL. 12/14/98 post from me to Arlin Nevels Mathews: Here's what I have in my files on your Monroe Co., GA James Wesley Nevels: The 1832 Gold Lottery of Georgia / Containing a List of the Fortunate Drawers in Said Lottery, pub. by Southern Historical Press, Rev. S. Emmett Lucas, Jr. p. 386, Monroe County: Squire Navels, Butts Militia District, Land Lot No. 965, District 18, Section 3. Family chart compiled in 1983 by Gladys Nevels of Ringgold, GA; forwarded to me by Ruth Nevels of Vicksburg, MS: Walter Brown Nevels, b. 29 July 1918 Colquitt Co., GA son of William Bonnie Nevels, b. April 18, 1891 Terrell Co., GA; d. 1 May, 1961 Mitchell Co., GA; m. Carrie Lillian Williams, b. 30 Nov. 1884 Webster Co., GA; d. 17 Aug. 1961 Mitchell Co., GA. son of William Wesley Nevels, b. Sept. 4, 1864 Stewart Co., GA; d. 25 June, 1951 Colquitt Co., GA; m. 18 Aug. 1889 Mary Lucy Oxford, b. 21 Sept 1872 Terrell Co., GA; d. 21 May 1940 Colquitt Co., GA. son of James Wesley Nevels, b. 3 Oct. 1831 Monroe Co., GA; d. 2 March 1911; m. Mary Jane Bishop, b. 7 July 1832; d. 30 Aug, 1905. Gladys also stated she had found James Wesley Nevels' application for Civil War pension at the state archives and that showed him b. 3 Oct 1831 in Monroe Co., GA. She went on to say that the Monroe Co., GA 1830 census shows only one Nevels: Squire Nevels, b. NC and his wife, both between the ages of 20 and 30 (I don't know where Gladys got the information about Squire being born in NC since that information was not given on the federal census until 1850). In 1840 Squire, his wife, and two male children, one under 5 and one between the ages of 5 and 10, were in Troup Co., GA. In 1850, Squire and his wife, Lotty (b. GA) were living in Tuscaloosa Co., AL with no children in the home. Gladys said that Squire and Lotty may have been the parents of James Wesley Nevels, but she had found no real proof. Perhaps you could check the probate records in Tuscaloosa to see what happened to Squire and/or Lotty's estates when they died. A property division might name children. Since you have found that James Wesley Nevels' father was b. in NC, you have another good clue that Squire may be his father (if Glady's note about Squire's birthplace is correct). ---------------- Post from Arllin Nevels Matthews to Jan Faulkner 12/15/98 Jan: Thanks for your e-mail regarding James Wesley Nevels 1. Yes, Gladys Nevels - Sale City, GA - and I are researching the same Nevels family as follows: 1. Squire Neville/Elizabeth (Lotty ??) 2. James Wesley Nevels 3. William Wesley Nevels [my note-Jan: Gladys' husband's grandfather] 3. Charlie Burton Nevels [my note-Jan: Arlin's grandfather] 2. I found a "strike over" in the family bible entry for James Wesley Nevels.. "John" was originally entered, was marked through, and James entered over the name John... In the 1850 census for Chambers County, AL, Elizabeth Nevels is listed as head of household, with son, James Wesley, age 19. Also, found in Chambers County, AL - marriage bonds for James Wesley and Mary Jane Bishop. (My ggrandparents) This would indicate that James' mother's name was Elizabeth...... 3. 1850 Tuscaloosa County, AL - Squire Nevels - Question ?? If Squire Nevels living in Tuscaloosa County, AL with "Lotty" and Elizabeth Nevels living in Chambers County, AL with son, James Wesley, did Squire and Elizabeth "divorce"? Gladys indicates that Squire Nevels and Lotty are listed on the 1850 Tuscaloosa County, AL census with no children in the hsehold. As Gladys states, we have found no proof that Squire Nevels is the father of James Wesley.... 4. Squire Nevels (b. ca 1800-1810) married a Bishop. Interesting that Squire Nevels and his son (?James Wesley) both married Bishops.... End of post from Arlin Nevels Matthews ---------- Jan
