    3. Howdy Glenn and Cousins: Let me see if I can be of some assistance here regarding archives on both the defunct MAISER list and the new ROOTSWEB system. > Subject: Re: Neville Archives > Date: Fri, 11 Jul 1997 03:23:48 -0500 (CDT) > From: Glenn Gohr <ggohr01@mail.orion.org> > To: NEVILLE-L@rootsweb.com > > After further study on this matter-- > > To answer the question about accessing the records of the list. > All prior messages on Rootsweb (from the last week of May until now) > should be available through the Rootsweb Archives. I haven't tried this, > but here is what I know: I have tried this (which is how I was able to know that my NEVILLE lines haven't appeared in either set of archives--more in a minute on this), and it works. > Send a message to: > NEVILLE-L-request@rootsweb.com > > For the subject line, put: > archive > In the body of the message, type: > search Joseph latest/* [snip] > This will only give you the exact lines where the words appear. To get all the archives to date, use this EMAIL procedure: SUBJECT: archive TO: NEVILLE-L-request@rootsweb.com BODY CONTENT: archive maxfiles 100 get volume97/* BE SURE TO TURN OFF ANY AUTOSIGS or it WILL NOT work. This does two things: (1) tells the ROOTSWEB server to get the archives from "volume 1997" (the current year) and (2) sets the maximum number of archived digests to 100 (to obtain _all_ of the digests for this year; currently we're nowhere near 100. I downloaded a relatively small number of digests on 05 July 97). Each archived digest will be sent to you as an individual email to be perused/saved at your discretion. This method is (IMHO) _infinitely_ better than using the search [text]/latest* command, since you will be receiving the entire email, in lieu of just the one line where the [text] requested appears in the [latest] occurrence of that [text]. That way you won't be missing (perhaps) a critical piece of info that may be the key to unlocking that stuck genealogical door. > I'm not sure, yet, how to access the old MAISER archives files, but they > have promised that we > could do that someday. Maybe this will help. > Sincerely, > Glenn Gohr (Neville List Manager) > ggohr01@mail.orion.org > ggohr@juno.com Ok, here's how to access the archived MAISER lists, but it does require that you (anyone) are (is) familiar with FTP protocols. Launch your "favorite FTP program" (no plugs from here!), and simply use this domain: HOST: rmgate.pop.indiana.edu No password is needed, user is anonymous. (Which means you can leave these fields empty in your FTP program.) When the ANONFTP directory appears in your FTP program's window (by default), simply scroll to the "N" folder, open same and scroll down to "nll.zip". (1) Download that file (filesize = 108K) which is the complete listing of emails sent through the MAISER system for the NEVILLE list (2) Use your PKUNZIP (IBMmers) or Stuffit Expander (Macintoshers) to open the archive (3) Save the files from the archive (expand/unarchive). (4) Read digested files with your favorite word-processing program. It's just that simple. (NOTE -- For a complete list of all the MAISER files, be sure to read the "karen.txt" file. Larry Stephens intentionally placed this file here for user benefit in locating surname/regional list archives. The abbreviations used in naming the individually-zipped files are not always apparent!) Hopefully that will help in reviewing the past archives. -=-=-=-=- NOW: can anyone help me in reviewing the past NEVILLE _ancestors_ of mine??? Granted, I don't know a great deal (actually precious little) of my English Grandparents, however any hole-filler or points of departure for further research would be most appreciated: Edward NEVILLE + Katherine HOWARD (d/o Robert HOWARD, Knight, Kent ENG) ..1 Margaret NEVILLE, d 30 SEP 1506 at Cobham, Kent ENG ....+ John BROOKE, Knight, (John also m Eleanor Austell) (s/o Edward ........ I was simply going to lurk a while longer to see if there were any cousins who might be researching in this timeframe, but since I wanted to help with the archives questions, I thought I'd throw out my NEVILLEs to see if anyone can help fill some holes.
