    1. John Neville Bible
    2. Hello Ren and group, I am a little behind on my correspondence. I got busy giving finals in summer school and then took a little vacation. In going through some papers, I found a file I had copied at the Kentucky Historical Society some years ago. Ren, apparently the person who compiled the information in 1899 was a descendant of your John Neville line since most of the information relates to John Neville. One reason I copied the file was because it predated the Booger information and had some differences. Since the researcher was not influenced by Booger's research, I thought I might find a clue to how Neville thought their lineage shaped up in pre-Booger days. Much of the information was gathered on a research trip to Washington, DC. ___________________________________ Quoting from one page as follows: Washington, DC May 24 or 2-4, 1899 Went this date to the Congressional Library and examined some books giving account of the Neville family. The books examined were 1st Jeffersons Notes on Virginia, on the maps (1787) is noted Nevills house at the head of Rull Run Creek in Bull Run Mountains. 2nd Washington's journal 1745 and 48 - pages 19-20, which gives account of George Neville. 3rd Engles Genealogies (Pennsylvania) which gives a long account of the Neville and Craig families. John P. Hawkins __________________________________ Is John Hawkins a part of your line, Ren? ____________________________________ Quoting from another pages of notes: Copied from John Neville's Bible John Neville was born July 26th, 1731, and was married to Winnefred Oldham, daughter of John and Anne Oldham, 24th August 1754. Isaac Craig Febry. 1st 1785 [The above variations in the spelling of the Neville/Neavill/Nevill surname are copied as found in Mr. Hawkins notes - Jan] __________________________________________ On another page is the following information, but no source is listed: John Neville, son of Richard Neville and Ann Burroughts, a cousin of Lord Fairfax on Occoquan (?) River. John Neville married Winnefred oldham descended from John Oldham emigrated in 1635. his son Thomas Oldham, Father of Col. Samuel Oldham of Westmoreland Co., Va. married Elizabeth Newton, their son married Ann Conway, and their daughter Winnefred married Genl. John Neville. [Does anyone know what source Mr. Hawkins was using for this information? - Jan) ____________________________________________ Mr. Hawkins also searched records in several VA counties where Nevilles are found and listed these by dates from 1731 through 1786. Most are deeds or records which those of you who have searched in VA would have found. However, one caught my attention because I do not remember having seen a reference on Richard Nevill in connection with John Neville in Winchester, VA. I will list all of the Winchester Co. information to give a context: 1731 "It is stated in Irving's Life of Washington that first station was at a lodge in the wilderness at the Stewards or Bartiff (?) of Lord Halifax about 12 miles from Winchester, near the Shenandoah." 1755 George Neville was engaged in Braddock's expedition, was afterward settled near Winchester, where he was Sheriff. Subsequently Captain, Colonel, and Brevet Brigadier General. 1761 John Neville, Frederick County, makes deed to lot in Winchester town. 1762 (or 1767) John Neville, Winchester, VA, appears in court as plaintiff Richard Neville as defendant John Neville is held responsible to his brothers for the interest in certain lands being 20 acres "taken up" by their father in his life time, and not disposed of by him in his will. It appears by the record that "some years" had passed since the death of their father. Record does not state location of land. _____________________________________________ The above record seems important. Did General John Neville live in Winchester? Who is Richard? There is a record of a Richard Nevill who was a Loyalist during Rev. War. I think he served with Pennsylvainia company. I will look up the reference if anyone wants it. The above case in Winchester should list the name of the father and brothers of John. Can anyone get copies of the proceedings? Jan
