Dear Neville Researchers: Regarding Joseph B. Neville's book, A 370-YEAR HISTORY OF ONE NEVILLE FAMILY (1612-1982) which was published by him in 1988, I do own a good, clean original copy. I ordered it when it was first published by Joe Neville with the assistance of R. Geoffrey Neville of Avon, Massachusetts. Joe Neville offered discounts to those who would purchase more than one copy. He also made sure that copies were distributed in various libraries around the country. He also said that once all those printed were sold, he would not be reprinting any more. It was a one time offer. Previous to this Joe had suffered a stroke which left him partially paralized and greatly hindered his completion of the book. The stroke also is to blame for many of the typographical errors contained in the book (not a lot, but some typos are present). Joe Neville typed the entire book by hand. He did not have a computer, word processor, or type setting to help. Many parts of the book have been shrunk (through the photocopy process I'm sure) so as to better map out all the descendants--and there are many. Joe claimed it to be the best book on the Nevilles in the U.S. ever printed. It probably is the most up-to-date, but many descendants were not listed, simply because it became very tedious for him to lay out the order in which they would fall and then carry the descendants down through so many generations. His layout is almost in a chart type format, although that does not really describe his method fully. It is easy to understand and digest and he does give sources. I wish there was an index, though. Joe was very much aware of other descendants in each line, but the project became too hard for him to add any more names--especially after his stroke. He also wrote an earlier book, A 360-YEAR HISTORY ... which has a little different format, but does contain information which does not appear in the second book. Several other Neville books have been written by other authors which hold almost as much weight as Joe's book, but they are not as up-to-date, and some cater to a certain line rather than to all the Nevilles in the U.S. Still Joe's book does not deal at all with the Isle of Wight Nevilles mentioned in John Bennett Boddie's books and very little on the North Carolina Nevilles. Enough of my rambling. As I had already discussed with Ren Neville, I am more than happy to take my book and make copies for all that are interested. I work at the Gospel Publishing House in Springfield, Missouri. They have an offset printing department (which will make just as good a copy as a photocopy machine) and I'm sure they can duplicate the book for less than 5 cents a page. They also can provide covers and spiral binding (like the original) at a reasonable price. I have tried in vain to contact R. Geoffrey Neville of Avon, Massachusetts or any of his close family members listed in the book. I had originally offered to help Joe Neville when he requested assistance with the publication of his book. R. Geoffrey Neville was quicker on the draw than me, so he was the one who helped Joe in the end. I would not intend to make copies at a profit--only the cost for duplicating. The book is on 8 1/2 X 11 in. paper, spiral bound. Pages are vii, 166 p., plus the title page and a poem on the back side of the title page. I come up with 175 pages total to be copied, plus the covers, binding, and shipping. Approximate cost @ .05 a page =$8.75 + $2.00 for covers & binding + $2.00 postage and handling = Total of $12.75. I believe the original cost was about $12.00 when the book was distributed in 1988. I believe that if I do some checking, I can get the cost down to about $10.00. I'll let you know the final cost so that people can start making orders. I've been on vacation, had company, and several other obligations or I would have jumped on this sooner.
